Went back into the woods...starboard side blew out.

Already have the track separated and tensioner yoke pulled out.
You already had a clue but tried your best to avoid Round 2 as long as you can. This round should go mo' bettah.

Mechanical shit :gaah: I won't repeat the old statement which comes to mind, but you're not dealing with something with tires, anyways.

Two bolts were sheared off where the yoke mounts to the idler carriage, had been that way for some time.

Broke 3- 27/64th bits, 1- #4 easy out, 1- 1/2" tap and my favorite little diamond point chisel.

Did manage to salvage the holes, so I don't have to heli-coil them.

Now, dealing with a blown hose on the backhoe.

It never stops.

I could spend a month rebuilding hydraulic cylinders on both machines.

AW46 is cheeper with the amount of use they get.

When you don't need equipment that often and don't really put many hours on it, this is cheaper than buying newer stuff that won't need repairs.

A $25K dozer or backhoe that wants a few hundred dollars every year or two is way smarter than having $50-60-70K sitting in the barn.

I'm not really mad about having to do this crap, it's just the price of doing business.

If I had to pay someone to do repairs and operate, that would be a slightly different deal.

I kept trying to resist but the thread title keeps reminding me of a joke. Sorry.

A vacationing penguin is driving his car through Oklahoma when he notices that the oil pressure light is on. He gets out to look and sees oil dripping out of the motor. He drives to the nearest town and stops at the first gas station.

After dropping the car off, the penguin goes for a walk around town. He sees an ice-cream shop and, being a penguin in Oklahoma, decides that something cold would really hit the spot. He gets a big dish of ice cream and sits down to eat. Having no hands he makes a real mess trying to eat with his flippers. After finishing his ice cream, he goes back to the gas station and asks the mechanic if he's found the problem. The mechanic looks up and says "It looks like you blew a seal."

"No no," the penguin replies, "it's just ice cream."

Well did you fix it yet? Surprised it's taken you this long. Must be making good money on your full time job! Other wise you would of had this fixed and running weeks ago.

:D

ETA, full time for people like millrights... about 4 hrs a day. 20 hours a week...

More like 2 - 20 hour days with 1500 miles.

Several cylinders were puking oil.

I had been using ISO 32 oil (10wt), switched to AW 46 (20wt) and it seems to have slowed a bit.

Rebuilding cylinders is in my future, I just don't want it in my immediate future.

Well, at THIS point "Immediate future" "Midpoint future" and "Distant future" may have distressingly similar time values (measured in days but still WAY too similar).

All the rain is hell on the driveway.

Went to address some bad areas yesterday.

Tractor front tire leaking around rim.

Breaking down on chinafreight, hand-jive tire machine to clean, repaint and remount.

I call it a tire "machine", its a dayum post that kinda holds the tire.

Better than running to town, having it dismounted, coming home and repainting, back to town, etc (but there are margaritas in town...this may be a procedural error).

I just live for this shit.

Battery cables were crap, had to rerun them...positive from back to front.

Pulled some deck plates to route cable and found a fuel filter that someone had added.

Diesel was going in but not coming out.

I bought two and ordered a 150 micron screen type to grab the big chunks before the paper filter.

Two problems solved....for now.

I collect hardened punches and chisels and alike. Specifically to knock crap out or make little holes bigger or to shear stuff off. Quicker than a drimmle or grinder or cutting torch, including the time it takes to get the cutting/welding torch out and working right.

Steering had been a little off to the port side, took a bit more pressure to turn.

On a whim, I swapped the op-rods for hydraulic valve that opens the clutches. One was set up just a smidgee bit longer than the other. Less than 1/8". They didn't get marked when I tore all that crap out to do the clutches. (post #2)

Setting them up from scratch is a major ordeal that I didn't want to dive into.

Much easier turn to portside now.

I'll take dumb and lucky any day. :D
