BEIJING, Aug. 24 -- A disinfectant that can "thoroughly and swiftly" kill the deadly avian flu virus is expected to hit the market in the near future.

A panel of poultry experts approved CAIQ-1 developed by the Chinese Academy of Inspection and Quarantine (CAIQ) in Beijing yesterday.

According to a report jointly released by experts from the Chinese Academy of Sciences, the Ministry of Agriculture and several other government agencies, the product is the first of its kind that can be directly used on domestic fowl. Traditional disinfectants can be used in empty coops only.

Researchers say CAIQ-1 can kill H5N1, the virus that causes avian flu and circulates among birds worldwide. It can also kill Newcastle disease virus and other pathogens that cause infectious bird diseases.

Researchers claim the new disinfectant does not leave any harmful residue in treated poultry.

The test on around 120,000 chickens and 94,000 ducks in Liaoning, Jilin and Shandong provinces showed the chemical also lowers ammonia levels in poultry housing.

"The innovation lies in that it uses the reaction of an acid and an alkali to kill microorganisms," said Tian Bo of the Chinese Academy of Sciences.

"It is highly effective, poison free, environmentally friendly and is not irritant," the report said.

The new disinfectant can also help raise birds' reproduction and lower death rates, researchers said.

Avian influenza is an infectious disease of birds caused by type A strains of the influenza virus. The disease, first identified in Italy more than 100 years ago, occurs worldwide.

Avian influenza does not normally infect species other than birds.
