SEATTLE -- Scores of police officers surrounded an SUV with their guns drawn in downtown Seattle following a chase that started in West Seattle following a takeover-style bank robbery, reported KIRO 7 Eyewitness News.

The FBI said a Wells Fargo Bank at California Avenue and Admiral Way was robbed by a man at 10:10 a.m. Tuesday.

FBI spokesman Robbie Burroughs said a man walked into the bank wearing a dark brown wig, a black jacket, black pants and had some kind of black shoe-polish type material with glitter in it spread on his face. That man has been identified as 51-year-old Douglas Michael Cox.

Burroughs said Cox jumped over a gate into the tellers’ area, pointed a gun at a teller, demanded money and then ran out and got into a waiting SUV driven by 47-year-old Kevin V. Palmer.

After discovering that the stolen money bag had dye packs inside it, the men stopped the vehicle to discard them, Burroughs said. During this stop, the vehicle caught the attention of two Seattle police officers who approached the men’s SUV and then became involved in a scuffle with Cox, the FBI said.

The SUV pulled away and police pursued the men's vehicle, a grey Jeep Cherokee, over the West Seattle Bridge and into downtown Seattle.

At one point, police said Palmer, who was driving the vehicle, bailed out at Eighth and Yesler streets and was immediately arrested and taken into custody. Cox then took the SUV’s wheel and continued to flee, Burroughs said.

The chase continued into the heart of the downtown Seattle financial district, where officers were able to box in the vehicle.

Police said they ordered Cox to exit the vehicle but he displayed a handgun in a threatening manner and refused to obey numerous commands to put his weapon down.

Video from Chopper 7 showed dozens of police and SWAT officers with their guns drawn and pointed at the vehicle on Spring Street between First and Second streets. Row after row of police, SWAT and emergecny vehicles lined the streets surrounding the alleged robber's SUV.

When Cox failed to comply and continued to display his weapon, officers opened fire, said Mark Jamieson of Seattle police.

Video from Chopper 7 showed glass shattering as police shot out the SUV's windows.

Jamieson said Cox continued to display his gun following the first round of shots, so officers fired again. Cox suffered a gunshot wound to the neck.

Officers then approached the vehicle. Cox was removed, laid onto the ground, treated by medical crews at the scene and then placed inside an ambulance. He was transported to Harborview Medical Center and is in serious condition.

Renee Witt with Seattle police said Cox is a known dangerous felon and officers feared for their lives.

Three Seattle police officers and one King County sheriff’s deputy were involved in the shooting. All have been placed on paid administrative leave as is standard procedure after a shooting.

A bystander was injured by flying glass but was not seriously hurt, police said.

IIRC, the average bank 'heist' yields only a few kilobux...in this case with a 'bonus' of a few dye packs at no extra charge.

The whole dastardly affair hardly seems worth it - especially to these somewhat older dudes.

The two involved seem determined to remove themselves from the human herd...if their failure to follow LEO instructions - while brandishing guns - is any indication.

Kinda makes 'ya wonder what some folks have in mind...or FOR a mind.
