Came up in my feed as younger son was standing behind me. He made this weird noise like a zombie begging for brains so I figured this is a project that will enter my kitchen sooner rather than later. And then I thought some of you men around here. And then all the KETO and Carnivore folks. So ... year. Here ya go:

Homemade Bacon Salt Recipe (Food Gift Idea)

First off, what the heck do you use this for?

  • Sprinkled over Chocolate Chip Cookies just before baking.
  • Bacon rim salt for Bloody Marys.
  • As the perfect finishing touch to a Caramel Sundae.
  • To top off a perfectly cooked Filet Mignon.
  • As a Popcorn seasoning.
  • Stirred into Scrambled Eggs.
  • Etc., etc., etc….

Three ingredients needed:
  • Bacon
  • Salt
  • Pepper

Of course you can dude it up a bit with other seasonings like paprika, onion salt instead of plain salt, garlic, whatever your daring and experimenting heart's desire. But you only need the three.

How to make it

  1. Cook the bacon: I start by baking an entire package of bacon in a 375 degree oven. The trick to getting crispy bacon this way is to bake it on cookie racks that are placed over baking sheets, allowing the air to circulate around the bacon and get every nook and cranny perfectly browned and cooked.
  2. Pulse the bacon: Let the bacon cool. Then, roughly chop the bacon. Or, you can transfer it to a food processor or spice grinder for a more fine grind.
  3. Combine and store: Add the salt and pepper to the ground bacon and stir to combine. Store in an airtight container in the refrigerator for up to 2 weeks.

'NOTHER NOTE FROM MOTHER HEN: I might freeze dry the mess and put an oxygen absorber when I store it in small sized milar bags or half-pint jars to see just how long it can be stored for.

How much salt and pepper per pound of bacon? Is this for extended preservation, or seasoning?
