KNOB NOSTER, Mo. —
A U.S. Air Force B-2 Spirit stealth bomber sustained damage on a runway after making an emergency landing early Tuesday morning at Whiteman Air Force Base.

A spokeswoman for the Air Force Global Strike Public Affairs unit said the bomber made the emergency landing after experiencing an "in-flight malfunction" during a routine training mission.

KMBC 9 Investigates confirmed those details after noticing a temporary flight restriction set in place by the Federal Aviation Administration "to provide a safe environment for an accident investigation."

"There were no personnel injuries and no fire associated with the landing," said Jennifer Greene, a spokeswoman for Air Force Global Strike Public Affairs. "The incident is under investigation and more information will be provided as it becomes available."

The emergency landing happened at approximately 12:30 a.m. Tuesday morning on a runway at Whiteman AFB, Greene said.

The B-2 bomber fleet has remained stationed at Whiteman AFB ever since Dec. 17, 1993.

It has the capability of delivering both conventional and nuclear munitions. The aircraft has a crew of two pilots, a pilot in the left seat and a commander in the right.

Emergency landing.. hat says everything right there.

Could be anything. Engine failure, electrical failure, hydraulic failure, instrument failure, computer malfunction...

Anything that impedes normal flight operations and degrades aircraft performance or flight capability is classified as an emergency in the pilot's flight manual and he has to follow procedures by declaring an emergency.

IIRC, there was a B-2 emergency last year where there was near total loss of control when a computer failed and nobody expected such a failure to affect the flight control system. Things that may seem insignificant can turn out to have unforeseen effects on other systems in complicated systems like the B-2.

Well if you haven't been home today you may want to look around. There appears to be treasure hunters working all day.
