Automatic registration for US military draft-eligible men to begin in December
By Cristina Stassis Apr 8, 2026, 04:17 PM

Automatic registration into the U.S. military draft pool for eligible men is slated to begin in December, following efforts from lawmakers and the selective service agency to streamline the previous self-registration process.

The Selective Service System, the federal agency that maintains a database of registered U.S. males who are considered draft-eligible in the event of a national emergency, submitted a proposed rule to the Office of Information and Regulatory Affairs on March 30, according to the office’s dashboard.

Automatic registration into Selective Service was mandated in December 2025, when President Donald Trump signed into law the fiscal year 2026 National Defense Authorization Act, the agency’s website says.

“This statutory change transfers responsibility for registration from individual men to SSS through integration with federal data sources,” the website reads.

Putting the effort in motion by this December is a move to simplify the registration process and the equivalent “workforce realignment,” according to the website.

The proposed rule is currently under review by the regulatory affairs office, awaiting finalization, per the dashboard.

The SSS coordinated with Congress throughout the 2026 NDAA process, the agency’s website says. In May 2024, lawmakers worked to incorporate language about the automatic registration into the annual defense authorization bill, citing money and legal challenges. The SSS costs around $30,000 a year.

“This will also allow us to rededicate resources — basically that means money — towards [readiness] and towards mobilization … rather than towards education and advertising campaigns driven to register people,” Rep. Chrissy Houlahan, D-Pa., who sponsored the language, said at the time.

Currently, almost all male U.S. citizens and immigrants aged 18 through 25 are required to self-register within 30 days of their 18th birthday, with late registration available until an individual turns 26.

Men who fail to register are considered to be in violation of the Military Selective Service Act and can face penalties, such as ineligibility for federal programs, a fine up to $250,000 or five years imprisonment.

Registration for the draft has dwindled in recent years, partly because the option to register was removed from federal student loan forms in 2022, which accounted for nearly a quarter of all previous registrations.

Meanwhile, after some attempts from lawmakers, women are still exempt from registration.

The SSS was established in 1917 by President Woodrow Wilson after the U.S. entered World War I. President Gerald Ford suspended the draft in 1975, but it was reinstated just five years later in 1980 by President Jimmy Carter when the Soviet Union invaded Afghanistan.

The U.S. hasn’t activated the draft since 1973 during the Vietnam War and has relied on volunteers ever since.

It would be fun to watch them try a draft..... I seem to remember a navy ship burning out of control for days pier side in San Diego.

Fragging of officers and NCOs would be off the charts..

Riots.... the riots would be glorious....

And then the open season on the LEOs tasked with press ganging the non compliant citizens that don't show up for boot.... cops think they are hated now.... just wait.... Chris Dorner has nothing on the types of folks that would step off the porch to hunt Y'all in defense of their loved ones....

On TB every waking moment
So how many blue states will refuse to hand over names and address of eligible men because Trump did this?
I recall President Ford doing away with the draft and the selective service and Carter reinstated it in 1980 and at that time I was told that I was too old.

Ditto that. ALL young men are SUPPOSED to register at 18. It's just that many didn't, which led to a paperwork nightmare. Most Driver's License offices take care of it when they get their DL, but this appears just to remove the headache of the ones who slip through the cracks and don't do it by making it automatic. No change here except in the paperwork.

When I was in High School and the talk about drafting women arose, I claimed I would just get pregnant.

Can't do THAT any more because I have had a change of life.

I do have concerns about my Grandsons, but their disrespectful parents aren't in contact with me for a few years now, so I will pray about it.

The feds will determine the best way to do the draft which could be a lottery again.

1969 Draft Lottery - N.C.O.C. Locator
1969 Draft Lottery (Copy and paste.)

Find out if you would have been drafted in 1969 based on your birth date and the alphabetical order of your last name. See the official list of numbers and dates from the draft lottery held in Washington D.C on December 1, 1969.

In 1969, the draft lottery went into effect. I was in college for engineering at Texas Tech. Per the above link, my number was 166. (I thought it was higher.) Several guys had Number 1. One guy in a SW Texas county had a number in the 300's and he was first in the draft for his county.

If a draft is reinstated, being in the cities would not be safe.

The way attitudes are today I highly doubt that any kind of draft would work. The days of JFK's "ask what you can do for your country" are long gone and buried deep. And even if it did happen I would be shocked if even half of those drafted could make it though basic training (boot camp).

Draft has been around for a long time just not automated. Remember it well. Young men should consider it a right of passage. It’s better than eating Tide Pods or jumping off cliffs to prove something. For thrills it will be better than any reality show.

I am against the draft in general. I don't think it is right that a male, or anyone, must register for selective service. This act doesn't really change anything, just makes the process more automated. The draft or registration for it says to the people 18 and into their 20s you can be kidnapped, at government gun point, and sent to war. All for the so-called good of the country, but most likely so some politicians can make money. Why only young people? If there is to be a draft then all ages need to be included. Pretty much everyone needs to be included male and female.

If a male doesn't register for selective service then they can be denied federal programs for life. Sounds like extortion and sexism to me. I thought the government was supposed to treat everyone equally.

The idea of selective service and the draft puts an undo burden on the 18-26 people of this country. This government created burden should be on everyone just not a selected group.

The government does treat everyone equally. Everyone is a slave in some way, whether it is economically, mentally, bodily, or something else.

It should be a choice and volunteered. Not something that people are forced at gun point to do.

Not aimed at you, Matt. This is just a good example. Riots, fragging officers and NCOs, fighting LEOs, generally tearing society apart. NO ONE, absolutely NO ONE EVER POINTS TO THE SOURCE. Congress passes these laws, sets up these agencies. The President signs the orders. The politicians order up the wars and the draft and the industrial capacity and the increases in the military industrial output resulting in higher dividends in the stock prices where they have their investments. And THE PEOPLE keep voting for the same representatives. The same reps who watch from the side lines and maybe hold a press conference to discuss the terrible violence. Their kids rarely if ever participate.
Mine was Vietnam. Personal letter from LBJ. Congratulations, your friends and neighbors have selected YOU for the SE Asia War Games. Report to...... I remember the draft board in Pasadena, CA. An old man with a couple of really good looking young women flanking him. Took him the time I walked out of the hearing until I was through the swinging gate and I heard, "The Board" has reached a decision. It was all BS. 85,000+ of our young men and women.

Registration for the draft, yes. An actual draft, no. It's been 51 years since the draft was suspended.

You are a poet!

We need to put the blame where it comes from. The government makes policies then sit back and watch all the subjects fight each other. When it doesn't work as well as they thought, they will then throw something in like the flag and national pride. I think that if congress votes to issue a draft then they should have to go as well. No special treatment. They want to send a person to war then they can go as well. I don't care if the congress person is 90 and needs a wheelchair.

Nobody has been drafted in half a century and I seriously doubt anyone in the near future will be. There are many Public Service oppurtinites for a draft today but seriouly doubt the current generation could perform them. It would require they awake early, bath and brush their teeth before PT and then breakfast. Then they would have to attend class and actually learn something productive like operating machinery or carpentry or even welding. Yes a draft into two years of civil service to our Country would destroy this new group. Wouldn’t hurt them but I can’t see them performing any type of community service and learn skills. From what I hear is they just want the Boomers dead, who were actually drafted, so they can have their life wealth. To much to soon for some I am sure. Yes I have draft age family so don’t use that complaint.

Its a price every male should be willing to pay all the way to the top.
I say male as im traditional, but these days with the modern females being what they are, maybe it should apply across the board to prove a point.

Half of the soy boys wouldn't even medically qualify for military service. The girls captured in a war would all be gang-raped, it's been the history of wars forever, so I am utterly against drafting them. I volunteered in 1972 even though my odds were good at escaping the draft at the time. Personally, I believe that the draft is a form of slavery. Even if necessary for the good of the country, it's still slavery by any honest definition.
