VIDEO Atlas Shrugged the movie (OP Jul 2021)

"Who is John Galt?"

Currently all three of the Atlas Shrugged movie trio are viewable on YouTube for free (some commercials inserted). Full length with no cuts.

The viewer criticism is mostly about the change of actors in each film. It is rather confusing at first.

Commercially the movies were a financial flop; box office receipts didn't cover production costs and you can see the effects of lack of funding in movies 2 and especially number 3. Apparently there were lots of money problems and actor availability clashes. Time was running out on their film option so they had to start filming ASAP.

Nevertheless most of Rand's key ideas from the book are presented.

In the final analysis I am glad that Rand's book was made into a movie, no matter how flawed. Ayn Rand's ideas are more important then ever now with the Leftist coup d'etat.

I have binged watched these movies and I cannot but help feel that we are living through Rand's vision of Leftist dystopia.

I'm a huge fan of these. In my view, the 2nd installment was the best of the three, although the first was also quite good. The third installment was on a more limited budget.

I went to these when they were first released. The movie critics panned them in a big way, which shows the critics' lack of credibility. More Leftists who are not to be believed.

Indeed. With today's uber-left woke Hollywood it would be nearly impossible to make these movies again.

Just watched all three on You Tube just recently. The changing of the actors is a bit confusing but the message is the same. The gist of infrastructure collapsing and the removal of personal responsibility is on full display today here in the USA. The regulating laws we see today and corruption are eerily similar. Just 2 weeks ago the railroads had a slowdown shipping container goods from Cali to Chicongo in order to alleviate a backlog. Get it ? Stop shipping to reduce a backlog ? Also heard govt. will ensure fair pricing to even out competition among railways. What is fair for one is not for another. Seems we are living by the book script. The lack of reliable service in most areas of the economy is outright scary. Try going to lowes or home depot and find help. Everyone is afraid to assume responsibility for their actions and we are left with many who are just playing it safe so as not to offend others or be blamed for doing it wrong. Where is Dagny Taggart ? Who is John Galt ?

I bet I have watched all three at least 10 times. It is annoying with the change of actors but still a good trilogy to watch. I think it is still available for free on Prime.

I liked the first Dagny, the second was a bit pudgy and the third one looked like a kid. Francisco in the second one was my favorite, the third one looked like an old man compared to the second one.

As libertarians like to say, "Atlas Shrugged" is not a user's manual. A few choice quotes from the book which could come out of any "progressive" cake hole today ...

"If you loved your brother, you’d give him a job he didn’t deserve, precisely because he didn’t deserve it -- that would be true love and kindness and brotherhood. Else what’s love for? If a man deserves a job, there’s no virtue in giving it to him. Virtue is the giving of the undeserved." (Henry Reardon’s mother)

"The John Galt Plan will reconcile all conflicts. It will protect the property of the rich and give a greater share to the poor. It will cut down the burden of your taxes and provide you with more government benefits. It will lower prices and raise wages. It will give more freedom to the individual and strengthen the bonds of collective obligations. It will combine the efficiency of free enterprise with the generosity of a planned economy." (Wesley Mouch)

"Real devotion consists of being willing to lie, cheat and fake in order to make another person happy -- to create for him the reality he wants, if he doesn’t like the one that exists." (Lillian Reardon)

-----

Dagny Taggart: "I said everything I had to say, three years ago. I told you where your course would take you. It has."

Jim Taggart: "Now there you go again! What’s the use of theorizing? We’re here, we’re not back three years ago. We’ve got to deal with the present, not the past. Maybe things would have been different, if we followed your opinion, maybe, but the fact is that we didn't -- and we’ve got to deal with facts. We’ve got to take reality as it is now, today!"

"Well, take it."

"I beg your pardon?"

"Take your reality. I’ll merely take your orders."

"That’s unfair! I’m asking for you opinion -- "

"You’re asking for reassurance, Jim. You’re not going to get it."

"I beg your pardon?"

"I’m not going to help you pretend -- by arguing with you -- that the reality you’re talking about is not what it is, that there’s still a way to make it work and to save your neck. There isn’t."

"Well ..." There was no explosion, no anger -- only the feeble uncertain voice of a man on the verge of abdication. "Well ... what would you want me to do?"

"Give up." He looked at her blankly. "Give up -- all of you, you and your Washington friends and your looting planners and the whole of your cannibal philosophy. Give up and get out of the way and let those of us who can, start from scratch out of the ruins."

"No!" The explosion came, oddly, now; it was the scream of a man who would rather die than betray his idea, and it came from a man who had spent his life evading the existence of ideas, acting with the expediency of a criminal. She wondered whether she had ever understood the essence of criminals. She wondered about the nature of the loyalty to the idea of denying ideas.

"No!" he cried, his voice lower, hoarser and more normal, sinking from the tone of a zealot to the tone of an overbearing executive. "That’s impossible! That’s out of the question!"

"Who said so?"

"Never mind! It’s so! Why do you always think of the impractical? Why don’t you accept reality as it is and do something about it? You’re the realist, you’re the doer, the mover, the producer, the Nat Taggart, you’re the person who’s able to achieve any goal she chooses! You could save us now, you could find a way to make things work -- if you wanted to!"

She burst out laughing.

-----

And always remember this when "They" offer you a compromise:

"The removal of a threat is not a payment, [and] the negation of a negative is not a reward." (John Galt)

This trilogy would have perfect for a director like Clint Eastwood. He filmed two movies at the same time and on budget. Many scenes were repeated needlessly, like the Taggart bridge. One film showed it having two tracks and the last it was a single track.

If all three films were planned in advance much overlaps (and expenses) could have been avoided.

It's a shame she is a lesbian.

I recently watched the new Star Trek series ("Star Trek: Picard") and in the last episode they had 7-of-9 holding hands and gazing soulfully into the eyes of another female crew member. When did 7-of-9 start playing for the other team?

What does "7-of-9" mean?

I don't mean to derail the thread, but your lesbian comment reminded me of it. von Koehler is probably right, it seems like everything in Hollywood these days gets the same checklist and they go down it checking off Woke boxes. Personally I don't really care because I don't have fantasies of sex with fictional characters or the actresses that play them, but I was curious if some previous episode of Star Trek had made her character gay.

In any case, I think the "Atlas Shrugged" movies should be given some leeway for changes of characters because even when they were made it was something of a miracle. Ayn Rand has never been popular in Hollywood.

The great tragedy for present day viewers is that there is no Galt's Gulch to retreat to.

Big government is everywhere, monitoring everything that is of interest to them.

The best option, which is difficult enough, is to "go Galt" and keep as low a profile as possible. However, I personally feel that sooner or later the two way shooting range will commence.

I can understand now whoever said "You can vote in socialism, but you can only fight your way out" was correct unfortunately.

I felt rather ill; both watching the trilogy, and reading the book, because I see it playing out before me daily, and have seen it for many years. Unfortunately, those who "should" see the movie or read the book, and truly digest it, WILL NOT.

I said that to DW yesterday. She said "What's Galt's Gulch?"

Apparently she has not listened to me for the last ten years.
