ECON As summer approaches, so does California law that will drive restaurant menu prices higher

Menu prices in California will rise once again when a new law goes into effect in the summer, a double-whammy after fast-food chains in the state hiked prices to help pay for the $20 minimum wage the state imposed last month.

Restaurant owners in the state are warning that a new law signed by Gov. Gavin Newsom that bans "junk fees" in the state starting July 1 will force them to raise prices because it prohibits restaurant surcharges and fees.

Restaurant owners have often relied on surcharges to provide their employees benefits like health care. Some businesses would note surcharges on menus, and others would make them optional, with the decision left to the customer.

However, the new law is prompting restaurant owners to hike prices on their menus to comply with the new law.

California's attorney general confirmed to the San Francisco Chronicle this week that restaurant surcharges and fees would be illegal under the new law in a blow to the industry.

Golden Gate Restaurant Association Director Laurie Thomas told CBS News Bay Area the law will put restaurants in a tough spot with either lower wages for employees or by discouraging customers with higher prices.

"So, now, do you take their rate down and do you go to an old-fashioned tip model and say to your servers, 'You have to tip the whole house, but that drops everybody's salaries' or do you raise your prices 20%, 25%?" Thomas said. "It might make a lot of customers happier. They might say, 'We understand why prices went up.' Let's hope that happens. But I don't know if our industry can hope that's what happens. They're still struggling. It's been a tough year."

North Dakota Gov. Doug Burgum argues California's new minimum wage law will affect every business in the state that serves food on 'Cavuto: Coast to Coast.'
Food writer Marcia Gagliardi also told CBS News Bay Area the new law will result in higher prices for consumers.

"I see restaurants easily raising prices 5%, 15%. It's going to be tricky," she told the outlet. "We're going to be seeing even higher prices based on this unfortunate interpretation. But not all is lost. … Things could change."

BS article. What they are really doing is hiding the charges that the state government is forcing upon the food establishments.

They call them junk fees, but they are fees that are now being charged, such as the following:

1) Obama care costs
2) Credit cards costs
3) Extra costs charged by the city / county / state
4) etc.

So the effect will be you will now be pissed at the place you eat instead of the state who actually is causing the problem

Restaurants are just closing around here. People can't afford restaurants. It's going to get really ugly this summer. Stores are already having shortages of heat and eat foods. (I don't really buy those, but I can see bare spots on shelves and in coolers just as much as the next guy.)

Agreed, since Covid ( an easy marker moment ) we have seen shortages that none of us ever expected to see in our lifetimes.

These shortages continue and though they are not of the same item every time, they are occurring and doing so much more often.

The variety we have seen in the past are gone. What was 50 flavors of soda at the local store will soon be 10 then 5 then ??

Everyone is going to downsize in one form or another.

Either it be fewer times out to eat or fewer vacations or what, everyone is cutting back......

Yep, we go to a few small places that charge more for credit card than cash due to their cost/fee for each credit card transaction.

Restaurants here in N Florida are booming! Sometimes it's an hour wait to get in. We've even had quite a few new ones open this year.

Not in my AO. There are a couple of family owned places by the college that are doing quite well, but they also charge a fee if you pay by card. I can't say that I'm sorry to see the franchises go, and only one of the family owned local places has closed, but that's because the couple that owned it retired. The hardware store is family owned too. :)

The franchises have some advantages as a business model that might allow them to keep going longer than it seems. I don't like eating there because I trust myself a lot more to use quality ingredients and sanitary conditions.

They have got bulk purchasing of a lot of frozen foods and mass marketing. People are used to going out for a quick bite using a the drive through at convenient locations. And they keep finding new ways to keep their costs down including robots and automated processes.

Oh people will understand. And they'll take their $$ and business elsewhere....most likely grocery stores or gas station food. They'll vote with their money. Anyone remember the saying "As goes CA, so goes the nation." We'll see how this ends, but I'd put money on it not ending well.
