INTL Artist's Feedback on Why China is a Huge Problem for Artist/Copywritten material

I am posting this with permission from Lisa Parker one of my favorite artists who I support by buying her work - and associated t-shirts, posters, coffee mugs, etc and have for a number of years now.

She lives in the UK but her work is sold all over the world, a couple of years ago her fans (including me) realized we kept see adverts for what appeared to be her work but "didn't look quite right."

At first, she was able to track down violators and get the fakes suspended but then factories started making unauthorized copies in China but advertising all over Facebook and other social media.

This week she BEAT THEM AT THEIR OWN GAME, by making her own version of a poster they "created" by stealing a bunch of her designs and putting them together - she just made her own version, cut the price in half and is signing the official prints to boot.

Below is a discussion I had with her after she asked me to clarify my e-mail address, I think it speaks for etc pretty well so I'm letting Lisa take over here:

I wont use my email to report copyright theft. These are Chinese companies posing as USA. The Chinese did not used to have access to facebook....they do now, you'll see posts all over the place. even on Amazon they are posing as Westerners and the product photos are fake. if i report it they can find the rest of my artworks which is what obviously has happened. I know I can beat them on price and I can drive their customers to me. X

we have so many problems with copyright. I worked in China and staff sell designs to other factories, this is why all my new artworks are only movies. I cant even put them on my website. you are welcome to tell me [of violations - Melodi], they may have some new ideas we cant take! lol. in the future I will drop nearly all licenses and only do the products that are too expensive to copy. everything will be much rarer and more exclusive. however I have to build up a name to do that. I keep my fan page politics free so its a nice palce to visit x

The Chinese - and actually many other countries - have no respect for copyright. My books have been copied and are available through many of the pirate sites throughout the world. There is absolutely nothing I can do about it. I can just hope that people (my readers) will be honorable and not steal my work. Thanks for sharing this - I'm going to follow your friend on Facebook - I love her work!!!

There is a phrase that professionals who deal with intellectual property issues use to describe how countries like India, China, Nigeria, etc., are when a new version of software (Windows XXX.0, say) comes out:

"One country, one disc".

Same here with both my books and my artwork. It's a lot of work going after these thieves.

Mmmmm.... Violence..
Seriously. Show / tell me how they are different?

Talking never seems to work.
It always seems who yells the loudest wins the argument
The general contempt they seem to have for us.

The two things that seems to get 75% of the world to behave and pay attention is to threaten violence or give them a bribe.
