TECH Are we living in the sci-fi future? Will it be more Star Trek or Terminator?

As stupid as Alexa and publicly available AI is, I ain't holding out any likelihood that these home robot things will ever be much use in a home setting. Too much chaos and unpredictability in everyday life of humans. Single task only. Maybe. Barely.

Humans and firing neurons have them beat all to hell.
Funny you should mention neurons. Look at the fruit fly brain simulation that's been making rounds on X recently. They're already putting it into drones and doing amazing things with it. This is just the beginning. LLMs are a dead end but things are about to get wild.

There's a video a few years old of some young resistors being targeted by drones. It's a sales pitch by a drone company. That's how individuals will be taken out, if needed. It won't be terminator humanoid bots - way too expensive. The war in Ukraine shows soldiers targeted individually by drones - that is how it will happen.

I'm thinking 1984. Flock cameras everywhere, ring doorbell cameras on most homes, cameras in all major retail businesses, huge data centers with your every financial transaction stored, smart driver licenses required to fly on commecial airlines.
CBDC? With the prevalence of credit cards and debit cards for every transaction we are well on our way there.
The majority of the public has already been programmed to accept using plastic for almost every purchase.

Yes.

No chance for Star Trek. If we are in a heliocentric world, it is impossible for us to get through the van allen radiation belt. This also means that the moon landing was a hoax and space probes are also likely fake. If we are on a flat earth surrounded by a dome, we cannot break through that either. All our satellites/ space stations are still within our "atmosphere". When is the last time you saw live transmissions outward from earth or full pictures of earth as a space craft left earth's atmosphere? I can already tell you.... never.

K...

Back on real Earth, we already have the Borg.

I mean, the color scheme is a bit off, but the endgame remains the same.

You will be assimilated.

They said we'd be living the life of the Jetsons by now. I think there is a lot of false advertising going on. Promises that will never be kept. Resources that will fail to be affordable enough to make a lot of their promises unavailable. Some of it may become reality but as niche and/or fashion items.

Humans will be like chickens. Tolerated, occasionally harvested, shooed away, thinned when troublesome, mostly ignored. No one asks a chicken what it wants.

Cherry 2000.

Recently a woman was injured on a mechanical penis ride (like a bull ride, but with the obvious change) named the "Gyrating Johnson." She's suing the bar. Really! You can't make this shit up! There may even be a video out there, but there were a lot of hits using the search terms "woman injured on gyrating johnson".

I imagine this will soon, if it isn't already, be a line item in any adult gathering place's insurance policies.

I say the Optimus video is really too optimistic. There are still too many unknown's.

I have interacted with robot dogs on the UW campus because the UW is one of the entities that is deciding which rights they might have like if a robot dog can escort you onto an aircraft, do you need to buy a ticket for it. Or the video of a humanoid robot helping an elderly person cross a busy street. Think of all the legal implications if they get run over.

I expect to see humanoid robots on campus sometime during this school year. I think that they will be a curiosity for a while but most of the students' parents wouldn't have had the brains to invest in the companies that made them like I did.

The fun part is going to be watching the interactions with students who have only seen videos. I've done it in person so I'm a step ahead of the students. That's part of the fun of getting old.
