Crochet Anyone good at reading patterns?

I don't crochet much. I can make dishrags and have made a couple hats and a poncho once. I'm trying to make some hats for the grands and I found this really cute dinosaur one. I've got the hat made but these little spikes are killing me. If anyone can help me figure out what to do I'd appreciate it.

Here's the instructions:
Row 1: sc in 2nd chain and each across (8), ch 1 and turn

Row 2: sc decrease, sc in next 4 stitches, sc decrease (6), ch 1 and turn

Row 3: sc decrease, sc in next 2 stitches, sc decrease (4), ch 1 and turn

Row 4: sc decrease 2 times (2), ch 1 and turn

Row 5: sc decrease, ch 1 and turn

Row 6: sc, ch 1 and turn

Row 7: 2 sc in first stitch, ch 1 and turn

Row 8: 2 sc in each stitch (4), ch 1 and turn

Row 9: 2 sc in first stitch, sc in next 2 stiches, 2 sc in last stitch (6), ch 1 and turn

Row 10: 2 sc in first stitch, sc in next 4 stitches, 2 sc in last stitch (8)

and here's the link in case anyone wants the whole pattern. Its probably stupidly easy and I'm just overthinking it. Thanks!!

sc = single crochet
turn = turn the work over and work on the other side

decreasing: (from Google AI)
In crochet, a decrease is when you reduce the number of stitches in a row or round. This makes the current row shorter than the previous one, and the project's shape will narrow over time.

Here are some ways to decrease in crochet:
  • Work one stitch over two spaces
This is a basic decrease that reduces the stitch count by one.

  • Double crochet two together
This stitch combines two stitches into one, reducing the stitch count by one.
    • Skip a stitch
In a row of single crochet stitches, you can skip one stitch and work a single crochet into the next stitch.

  • Single crochet three together
This method removes two stitches at once by working a single crochet over three stitches and pulling them together.

Increases and decreases are used to change the shape and drape of crochet projects. For example, you can use decreases to turn a crochet circle into a hat or to make clothing more flattering to your shape.

It would be easier if I could just sit with you, but try reading the instructions and then looking at the youtubes. I think it'll make total sense. You're right: that's not a hard project. You're just decreasing the rows as you get closer to the top of the hat (?)

This youtube is a little different from your pattern, but maybe your pattern will make more sense now.

Added: this youtube is a fine pattern for beginners! It's all single crochet.

Do you know how to do the decrease and increase stitches?
It sounds like you begin by chaining 8, (not stated above)
then single crochet in each of the chains (begin in 2nd chain from hook)
Next row 2 begins the decrease stitches. Always chain 1 and turn the work at end of each row.
Rows 3,4,5 also have decrease stitches.
Row 6 will be at the point of the spike.
Row 7 will start you back down the spike with "increase" stitches (2 single crochet in first stitch), chain 1 and turn,
Rows 8, 9, 10 also increase stitches and you're done!
Does that help? If not, let me know - I'm doing one here to duplicate the pattern and can take a picture if you need it.

What Meemur said! The numbers in the parentheses refer to the correct number of stitches in the row...
Example:
Row 3: sc decrease, sc in next 2 stitches, sc decrease (4), ch 1 and turn

That means that after your two single crochet decreases, you should have 4 stitches left in the row.

Hope that helps...it really is a simple pattern...

That would really help her! I don't have a good way to post my own photos.

It will look like a little hour glass type piece when you are finished. Then you will sew the sides of it together and stitch it to the dinosaur. Repeat for number of spikes you have.
I used #4 yarn and a J hook to quickly do this sample. Yours will look much better!
You'll get a better point at the top and tighter weave if your dino was made with a smaller yarn and hook.
Are pdf's allowed? my pics were too large, got rejected.

ok that was the best help! I have to see to comprehend and I was struggling. I finished them last night but I ended up just making double and sewing them together. More than one way to skin a cat right? I need to sew the last spike on and then I'll post a pic.

Thank you ALL for the help! The hat isn't perfect but it's going to a dinosaur crazy 2.5yo so it's ok. At least that's what I keep telling myself. Now to start on the girls hats.
