Don't know if you've seen this channel yet, but Airforceproud95 has a lot of fun videos covering the pilot and ATC roles for MSFS.

I used to watch him just for his air traffic controller videos. He's hilarious

Recommendations for a good PC (or Android) submarine game?
I loved Silent Service for my C-64. I did try one of the more modern Sims for an Los Angeles Attack Submarine years ago. It was fun and different. Silent Service really got me hooked on the stories of WWII submarines. I read one of the books about the USS Tang, I think it was. I remember enjoying it.

for the most part, a crashed toilet won’t kill anyone… :D
not for lack of trying

The great thing about flight sims, is that they take skill.

I hate being killed by some pasty faced geek, who spent all summer in their parents basement leveling up their character..

But I have no problem with being killed by the same geek if he can outfly me.

Years ago I was a very good pilot in "Confirmed Kill" aka "Aces High".. easily taking on multiple players.

My best mission was me in a Japanese zero taking on 17 assorted planes by myself. I was credited with killing 9 of them.

Never dive into someone who's intentionally flying 10 feet off the ground..

At least not without watching your altimeter.

Another time, I killed 5 pilots in P38 Lightnings in my outclassed Supermarine Spitfire. All by myself against other players.

The "critical mach" issue with the P-38 if modeled into the SIM and you're not up on it will get you every time if you go up against anything with a better one, like the Spitfire.

(They didn't get a good fix put in until the later "J" and a bunch of field retro kits to the ETO were lost when the RAF mistook a C-54 for a FW-200 and shot it down.)

Elite Dangerous. Awesome space sim.

The lore says you have to be a master level geek to play that one!

I like the cut of your jib, sir.

So I read the destructions for posting photos, knew all that already.
Now to learn to resize an image. Bleah...

Elite Dangerous is quite entertaining. I started to play it when it was just Elite, back on a Commodore 64. Got into the ED version for a few months, but would have needed to seriously upgrade the system to really take advantage of it. Plus add in HOTAS, head tracker, etc. It still sits in the Steam directory if I want to dl it again though. But for now, War Thunder scratches the pvp itch. Probably will be finding a head tracker though, the top tier air isn't easy.

Yep, that's how I was doing it also. But upgrading hardware specs to max makes it a completely different experience. It's a huge difference. Same with the flight sims - taking the time to do at least some kind of sim pit puts the game experience into another level. I wish I could tolerate VR, but I can't.

Yep, I use my flight simulator regularly.

Sim-1.jpg
HP Omen with 13th generation Intel i7 (i7-13700), 32 GB DDR5 RAM, 1 TB M2 SSD, RTX3060 12 GB GDDR6, 32" curved Omni (ViewSonic) main monitor, 10" generic 1080p aux monitor, Honeycomb Alpha Yoke/switch panel, FlightSimStuff Carb Heat/Throttle/Mixture with trim wheel and flaps, Logitech radio panel, Logitech/Saitek rudder pedals with Cessna-Style pedal mod, racing sim pit with monitor mount.

Simulator-small.jpg

I use a Corsair wireless Headset/Mic setup since it was a gift, and I didn't have to dig my real headset out of my flight bag every time I needed to use it.

I have X-Plane 11 on disc, but have transitioned to X-Plane 12 (Steam) and MSFS-2020 (Steam). Not too long ago I was using MSFS-X SE. Man, times have changed. I typically fly only GA models - C152/C172 which are similar to the trainers at all of the "local" flight schools.

I just wish the flight model accuracy of XP12 could have the visual fidelity of FS 2020. That would be a perfect match. Trying to download umpty-gazillion GB of Auto-Ortho is too much to ask of my limited rural connection. I do have SimHeaven loaded, but after a recent update to XP12 things seem to be not loading correctly.

With the RTX3060 I can have decent frame rates in 1080p with mostly high settings. Sometimes it gets laggy while low and slow over Fort Worth and into DFW though. I am thinking that for a retirement gift I will be buying an AMD RX9060XT (18GB) and upgrading the monitor to at least 34" and 1440.

The RTX3060 can go into my homebuilt gaming PC to replace the aging RTX-2060 (6GB DDR6).

Nice rig! You don't use a head tracker with that?
I haven't thought much about getting TracIR, Tobii or Steam's View Track. I don't do any dogfighting, so other than scanning 45 degrees right or left (hat switch on yoke) and then 90 degrees right/left (buttons on yoke) when clearing turns in the pattern, I don't really do a lot of sightseeing. I have a standard view that defaults to a good view through the windshield while watching the sixpack - and a pretty wide view set up on that curved monitor. A quick glance to the right at the smaller monitor is good enough for the Garmin GN 530/430 popouts. I might try it later though. Just checking on prices and they seem to be a bit more reasonable now.

My mission for this weekend is to get an old Android phone I had laying around to connect with my sim to run my EFB program. I need to build in familiarity with using it.

I will also be going through my usual pattern work, steep turns, and turns around a point.

Well, I just sprung for a TrackIR system. I'll see how that works, and if I can justify it maybe in a year or so I'll try the Tobii, even though that doesn't seem to have 100% good reviews.

The TrackIR is kinda clunky, but it seems to be pretty reliable and very integrated into the War Thunder systems. I don't have anywhere near the screen area that some do, but the old samsung 37" curve works fairly well.

In honor of what Israel is doing to Iran I thought I'd drop some ideas. The DCS World has a Persian Gulf map that has a little of Iran on it. Sadly they don't have an Iran map...yet.

My problem is that the game had a paper frame that went around a full size keyboard. Various keys controlled different systems, and I flew with a joystick. My problem is that I no longer have a compatible keyboard. Thanks for the link. I’ll surf over in a bit.

Well, the best part of doing the PVP stuff is hearing the yelling when you manage to get a good kill. Even better is when the guy is screaming at you in arabic.

My setup is similar to Dry Creek's, but not as 'clean'.

I have a similar flight chair, the Warthog HOTAS for helos and jets, and can swap that out for Honeycomb yoke and throttle for bigger birds.
Bungie cords and zip ties are integral structural elements.

I even had my wife cut vinyl "no step" labels for the Honeycomb set!

I'll try to downsize a pic today...

Mine is a Playseat.
Has mounting hardware on both sides, and a removable column between the legs for yoke or steering wheel.
I made my own armrests for it.
I think mine is discontinued, but there are better ones available.

Like I said, DryCreek's is cleaner, but I don't see the mess from my VR goggles.

All I see is the plane and the sky. :D

On my dream list:
Puma helo controls.

Drool...

Skytech gaming PC.
i7, 32GB, 8GB 1090 graphics card, also an addon 1TB SSD just for the simware.
Oculus Rift CV1 VR headset and sensors.

Turtle Beach pedals.
I highly recommend them.

My g card is getting pretty elderly, should prolly upscale that before getting the Puma.

A boy can dream...

That'll teach me to brag on the interwebz.

I just went up to the flight room, discovered that the power supply for my USB hub has shit the bed.

First World problem but thanks to Amazon, I'll have a new one tomorrow!
When I'm at work...

I played ED some, it was ok. You forget how huge space really is when you have been accustomed to Hyperspace and Warp Drive.

I remember one system where the warp in point was an hour of real time to get to the station. Flew out there once. Wasn't impressed.

I wanted to do exploring, but when I finally got a ship kitted out for it I got a little frustrated trying to fly far enough away to be the first one to visit some place. I also had some issues getting my Oculus 3 to reliability connect. It was very finicky about what order things needed to be turned on. I eventually got bored.

It's sad and funny. Once I heard about DCS World I couldn't wait to get a good setup to play it. I finally had the money to do so and got a little frustrated at the complexity which was the one thing I was looking forward to. Be careful what you wish for.

I wish there were more options for decent VR games, but it's still very niche. It needs a killer app, but no one wants to develop for it because there isn't a big audience. It's a catch 22.

Well, with the strike on Iran I am starting to feel the interest again. I may avoid my dream fighter (F-16) and learn the F-18 because there seems to be more tutorials for it. And in case anyone cares as to why the F-16 is my favorite, it's simply because my Dad and Grandpa built them at General Dynamics/Lockheed. I used to love the Family weekends where we could tour the plant. A mile long from start to finish. I can't imagine the difficulties of keeping that building air-conditioned during the Texas summers.
