Misc Another missing tale...

Since the last story was found so quickly, and our collective brains are on this topic... There was a very good story about a man who lived at the top of a hill in his community and his best friend was killed by river raiders. He eventually took in a brother and sister and they became traders in a motor home. Along the way they picked up a soldier who had just got home... there was a 2nd story about the soldier's experience.

Can anyone help me locate it? Thanks.
