TRANS An EV I'd actually consider buying, the Lucid Air.

Folks,
Earlier this week we had an assignment to inspect a large number of Teslas at a local dealer. Well, mixed in between the 15 or so Teslas were two production models of the new Lucid Air. It's a direct competitor to the top of the line Tesla, whatever the model is (the X I believe? Their model numbers all run together with me. I collectively call them all junk :)

Here's some photographs of these vehicles. I say I'd buy one, because it looks to have more room than the big Tesla, and honestly the car was put together better than current Rolls Royces (I'd say they're as well put together as a Maybach, because Mercedes actually hand builds those).

Paint was rock solid consistent throughout the vehicle, couldn't see a single flaw or evidence of filler anywhere on the vehicles. Beautifully done paint. Panel seams were exact on every panel on the car. (There were 5 of us there; 3 of them are newer inspectors that I mentor). The suspension parts looked machined rather than cast, and the interior looked perfect from what we could see. Didn't have the keys so couldn't look inside.
For fun, I asked the "mentor-ees" to compare the Lucid to the Tesla Model 3 it was sitting beside. Told them to look at the right door on the Lucid and the left door on the Tesla. Well, the Tesla didn't do to well. My guys spotted a paint run on the Tesla's door, when they miked the paint it varied from 4.0 mils to 6.1 mils front to back of the door. The Lucid was a rock solid 5-5.5 mils all over it. The panel gaps on the Tesla also failed-the driver's door was hung incorrectly and the panel gap between the door and the fender reduced in size the further down you went on the door. The Lucid on the other hand was literally the same on every door-precision hanging of the doors. It was a great education and shows just what an overpriced ripoff the Tesla vehicles are. Cadillac prices, Subaru build quality.

Here's some pics,

Note how the windshield curves up into the roof. Very nicely done and good thick glass too. They're using the glass as a stiffener for the upper unibody.

Oh, and the car has a curved piece of glass for the dashoard. Tesla just sources a large flat screen and slaps it in the middle of the dash. The new Mercedes EV also uses the single dash glass, it's more carlike for a new customer.

Oh, one of the Lucid's upcoming models will have over 1100 horsepower (yep, 1100 !!!) . The Air Dream edition. It also has an estimated 471 mile range in the performance trim level.

This car maker is doing it right from what I see.

Windshield looks expensive LOL. Better have the glass coverage on your insurance.

Might be seeing more machined parts vrs cast because of the up front lower cost for a low volume production.
Much cheaper to run some parts on a cnc machine vrs setting up casting production.

That's a good point. Plus it offers a higher quality-Tesla casts their control arms if I remember correctly, and there was an issue/silent recall on them. The metal used wasn't of the highest quality and some of them broke on customers.

How long can this libtard delusion last, and how long until reality intrudes and crushes the green energy idiocy?

IF they indeed manage to kill off 90% of humanity, the greenies might - and I say MIGHT - be able to make do on non-fossil energy. Not a gamble I want to take ...

Do please take into consideration those few of us who consider target selection and target discrimination early along, and think of the sign anyone seen in an EV is waving when it goes kinetic..... If there is no up-armored version, leave it be.

One of my friends pointed out this AM that lots of people are choosing up sides right now. Choose carefully, and think about how those choices are expressed....

About a month or so ago.i came across one like the maroon one at a horse show. I had no clue what it was, had to walk over and look, then look them up. It was a good looking ride that's for sure.

That maroon one has my name stamped in the door.

EV or not that is a beautiful machine.

Can I get a test drive? On a closed track? You know just to see what's up with that beauty?

Mmmhmmm...Mamma likes fast cars that are well put together. Yep!

I'm not an EV gal but I'm not going to turn it away either.

A windshield being integrated into the support structure? What F'n moron dreamt this up? A serious rock chip totals the car...

Opel developed the up sloping windshield in 2008 with the twintop model of the Astra. Apparently they're pretty easy to replace and costs were similar to a normal windshield. Lots more adhesive used which makes cutting the old one out a pretty rough job.

@AlfaMan - not trying to hijack the thread...but... :D Your comment about Cadillac prices and Suburu build... DH and I are going to be purchasing a car towards the end of the year and Suburu - either Outback or Forester - were a couple that we were considering. (Along with a Honda CRV and a Toyota Rav4) - do you not like Suburus? Can you tell me why?

It was sharp in person, caught my eye from 100yds away. As I said I had to look them up then saw the price and promptly walked away laughing.

Yeah, I'm not even thinking about buying it. I just wanna borrow it, see if it's as mean as it looks.

Some cars look mean. Some cars are nasty. Some are all look no motor.

I just want to see how fast they are and how they handle under sustained conditions.

That all. :D

I am not a pro EV person. But if through the advancement of technology......... we could get to a 1000 mile range vehicle, while reducing the size and resources of the battery...................... then at some point efficiency will overcome the costs and concerns of materials and longevity.
I do realize we have a long way to go and we are not ready now.
However, given time and mankinds penchant for progress, it is simply a matter of time before we achieve what we want to.

Yes I know that man`s personal relationships with each other have been less than stellar. But when it comes to technology................................................................................

Just wonderin' as to wait-for-replacement time on that windshield when it gets cracked/chipped? I'd hate to have it in the shop too long and have to borrow the butler's Rolls or the maid's Birdcage Maserati, ya know.

You're right, no, I don't like Subarus. Understand, I'm a full line inspector; I look at every make of vehicle brought into North America, and do it professionally. There are better cars out there.

In my experience the incidence of blown head gaskets and poor build quality is what turns me off to the brand. That and Fuji Heavy Industries' (parent co. of Subaru) has to almost take a beating to be forced to call out recalls (like the one that affected 227k motors-the EGR valve would come apart and suck up into the engine, completely trashing it).

I've looked at numerous newer model and older models of this brand, 3 out of 10 I look at have oil leaking into their coolant or a completely blown head gasket in progress (open up the oil cap and it looks like a jar of mayonnaise has been dumped in the motor) . It's a car I don't consider to be very reliable.

Of course there is a contingent here on TB2K that are very happy with their Subarus and champion their prowess in the snow/mud/rain on a regular basis. They can give you the positives of the brand based on their ownership experiences.

I base my assessment of the brand literally on what I deal with on an almost daily basis.

Thank you so much!!! I value your opinion! I'm going to be taking Subarus off the list. :)

i was on the wait list for lucid and put down a deposit. I passed when my time came up as a. the price kept going up and up for the year I was on the list and b. you cannot use a tesla charging station I was told and at first - you would pretty much need to charge at home until they get an infrastructure built up. so I dropped out. lost interest. chickened out. did not want to write the check..whatever you want to call it.

You forgot the economy is collapsing,
food is rapidly disappearing, along with life sustaining medicine, the world
is locked in progressive, runaway inflation, we are on the edge of nuclear War with
Russia, we still have a COVID EPIDEMIC and now a monkeypox epidemic threatening, and we have no idea WHO IS REALLY AT THE WHEEL OF OUR SHIP OF STATE?

Yea, I'd say thats the time for a brand new luxury car. :gaah::smashblue:

Nice...great photos, nice looking too expensive set of wheels. With my champagne taste and a beer income, I'll be happy to take that Charger!

The cost of that Lucid and the insurance costs would mean the most expensive bottle of champagne with gold flecks in it...ridiculous price.

Am thinking that when civilization took a hard 90 degree turn when Ford invented mass produced autos and the governments got unto the road building business, that the Amish did not make a mistake when they kept driving their horse and buggies straight on rather than take that Off ramp everyone else took...
