Ouch! That price...

Hmmm... looking more and more like my purchase of Tattler lids and extra rubber rings back in 2009 was a bit prescient. I actually was more concerned about the price becoming ridiculous than absolute shortages, and this proves that out. Wow!

Actually, at Walmart lids are just shy of $4. So at $5 from a smaller company without loss leaders isn't really that bad.

I have not looked in Walmart lately but it was only two week ago and I was told they still had no canning lids in stock.
Oh and the same for ammo.

No shortage of canning supplies in stores around here either way.
I just noticed the ad.

With the lighter lids, a person has to be extra careful not to over tighten before processing,
as they can't withstand much pressure. Fingertip or a little less.

I've seen Denali lids (made in China) online and tried to buy them, but at the Walmart online checkout, they ended up out of stock. I had an order close to two weeks ago for 70 dollars worth of canning supplies and each time I tried to check out, there were items showing as out of stock. I had to delete them from my order and refresh the check out and WTH, another out of stock item over and over so in the end, all I got was two dozen ball regular mouth jars with lids and rings for around 19 bucks picked up.

I pulled some beets yesterday and will be canning Thursday or Friday. Cleaned out the last cucumbers for another small batch of pickles and some dilly beans. I prefer Ball bottles and lids but I'm willing to try other brands. Just a little leery of anything from China. This is my food we're talking about.

Here's one of my beets. Best I've grown in a long time.

I was at Meijer yesterday. After being out of stock on all canning lids for about 2 months, they had Ball regular and wide lids at $2.49 a box. There was a limit of 6 per customer.

I'll keep an eye out locally, but there are a lot of home canners up here on the tundra. Doubt if the name-brand ones will last long on the shelves.

It pays to stay a couple years ahead on stuff like this when they are cheap and available.

We are getting into the zone of...something is better than nothing.
Yep... my DDIL just said she made a big pot of chicken broth... I offered to can it for her. I said it's a perfect spot to use some of the Tattler lids- they are a bit touchy, and can't handle any siphoning at all, but I usually get 100% seals on broth and other thinner products. (Green beans, etc... I have had issues with things like thick soups or baked beans- I solved it mostly by leaving a larger head space)

Saving my regular lids for higher value stuff like canned meats.

I ordered canning lids from Lehmans.com ages ago. The order is still active. Their supplier is not supplying. They found a Amish in Ohio who is making regular mouthed lids. They about $5.00 a dozen plus shipping. I've no idea the quality of the Amish lids. Salty!

A canning group I'm in has been finding lids coming through the Amish sector that have blue sealant. So far the reviews are good. But I haven't seen any yet.

The customer order rep at Lehmans said that some of the ladies there had tried the Amish made lids without any issue. According to the rep they'd used them in a pressure canner and no problems. These lids only come in regular mouth size. They aren't making large mouth at this time.
