Tokyo, Japan (CNN)Japan's Sakurajima volcano, located on the island of Kyushu, erupted on Sunday, prompting evacuations in the region.

The Japan Meteorological Agency (JMA) said the volcano erupted around 8:05 p.m. local time (7:05 a.m. ET). Footage from the agency's surveillance camera showed a cloud of smoke or ash rising from the volcano.

JMA announced a Level 5 alert -- the highest level -- calling for people to evacuate. JMA advised caution to residents in Kagoshima Prefecture and Kagoshima City.

There were no immediate reports of damage or casualties.

Japan's nuclear regulators said that no irregularities had been detected at the nearby Sendai nuclear power plant, Reuters reported.

According to NASA, Sakurajima is one of Japan's most active volcanoes, having erupted on several occasions in recent decades.

It previously erupted in January, spewing a cloud of ash kilometers into the air.

The volcano is located in the Kagoshima Prefecture on the southern tip of Japan.

Well that adds extra interest to this situation, considering what happened in Fukushima.

ummm, yeah. and it also sounds like they weren't expecting this particular volcano to erupt in such a large manner, this is the first time in modern history that Japan has had to raise an eruption level to a 5. Not good, not good at all.

Kyushu, Japan, 31.59°N / 130.66°E
Current status: erupting (4 out of 5)
Last update: 22 Aug 2022 (Volcanic Ash Advisory)

Sakurajima (also spelled Sakurashima or Sakura-jima, 桜島 in Japanese) volcano in southern Kyushu is one of the most active volcanoes in the world, and one of the few that are at present in constant (persistant) activity. Its ongoing typical activity range from strong strombolian to large ash explosions every 4-24 hours.
The volcano is the historically active center of the larger complex of the Aira caldera volcano. Located across Kagoshima Bay, which separates the city and the volcano by 4.2 km of water, its summit is only 8 km east of the city of Kagoshima with a population of half a million. Sakurajima's eruptive history has been recorded since the 8th century. It frequently deposits ash on Kagoshima. Due to its explosive potential, it is considered a very dangerous volcano and closely monitored.
The largest historical eruptions of Sakurajima took place during 1471-76 and in 1914.
