A Question for the Spinners

Kathy in WV

Down on the Farm...
I'm going this weekend to help a friend clip her Angora goat. Her coat is about 7 inches long and my friend doesn't want it. (She is just starting with goats). I want to bring this home and clean it up and try my hand at spinning. Since I've never done this before I don't even know how to clean it it up so I'm hoping someone will take pity:D on me and tell me what to do. I figure its free and might be good to learn on. I'm just going to be playing around with a drop spindle. Can you tell me how to wash it? Etc... Thank you--- Kathy

Hi Kathy,

I haven't worked with mohair (angora goat), but you would wash it the same as wool. I just posted how to wash wool on the other spinning thread so you can find it there. It really is handled very much like wool, wash, card and spin. The technique for spinning it might be a bit different, it is long, silky and doesn't have the crimp that wool does. Mohair would likely matt rather than felt so you would need to be careful of that. It is a lovely fiber and makes heavenly socks when blended with wool.

Have fun learning!!
