2 Killed, 1 Hurt In Lowry Tunnel Crash In Minneapolis

April 19, 2021 at 5:00 am

MINNEAPOLIS (WCCO) — Two men were killed and another was seriously hurt following a fiery crash Sunday night in the Lowry Tunnel in Minneapolis.

The Minnesota State Patrol says the crash happened around 9:30 p.m. in the westbound lanes of Interstate 94. Traffic camera footage shows a BMW speeding into the tunnel, striking a freeway barrier wall and bursting into flames. Investigators say the crash ruptured the BMW’s fuel tank, causing the fireball.

Two men were killed in the crash. Another person inside the car, 24-year-old Demetrius Ramon Hart of Minneapolis, suffered life-threatening injuries. He was brought to Hennepin Healthcare for treatment.

The tunnel was closed for about four hours as investigators worked the scene.

Or, riots and one MAJOR escape shut down.

Dude, you are not lying. We try to avoid the cities in general, but life sometimes calls for it. One of the kids' drs is there, do we have to go sometimes.

Even in that, there are definitely "avoid" zones. Downtown minneapolis is definitely one. The area with the lowry tunnel? Oh yah, for sure!!

The tunnel itself?! Are you nuts?!!! No way. And that us just in general principle. How many movies have something horrible happen in the tunnel? Zombies, fires, bombs, gov chasing you, alien invasion and you are stuck in the tunnel, end of the world travel and bad juju is oozing out if it?

Need I go on?

Right now with a known problem in the direct vicinity and going in the tunnel.....no way. I hope people are ok. The timing is interestingly suspicious

Given the video footage, how are any vehicles trapped inside, other than the splodey bimmer?

Accidents are fairly common at that spot but not like this one.

I believe coming into that tunnel from the east is 45mph. During the peak of the day it's slow and go and oil is accumulated on that curve. Add a little water and head in with too much momentum and away you go!

IIRC someone(s) tried turning around, and like that ship in the canal a few weeks back, got rather stuck, and wedged in sideways. (post # 7)
