there have been a number of large quakes in that region in the past two weeks, and this is exactly what I was thinking as well that this is a foreshock.

Not likely...the canal is nearly 250 miles away from the epicenter.

They had gone to Costa Rica, but I thought they were back in Panama. I know her (grown) kiddos live there, too.

Yes but they came back to the states after their more recent trip to CR, I think they come once or twice a year for medical stuff and then go back to Panama.

the quake was off shore and I'm not seeing any reports of major damage, etc.

Last time I was in Panama, I felt an earthquake. I was in Boquete, near Volcan Baru. Fairly regular occurance
