A fourth grader at Harvey, Louisiana’s Woodmere Elementary School was suspended six days after he moved a BB gun that his younger brother tripped over during virtual class.

NOLA.com reports that the BB gun was “unloaded,” and that Ka Mauri Harrison grabbed it on September 11, 2020, and moved it because his younger brother had stumbled over it.

Harrison put the BB gun “next to his chair,” and his teacher saw it on camera. He was then suspended “because he handled the BB gun during the virtual class,” which Jefferson Parish Public schools claimed was a violation of policy.

A behavior report from the school said, “Harrison left his seat [at home] momentarily, out of view of the teacher. When the student returned, he had what appeared to be a full-sized rifle in his possession.”

The teacher allegedly tried to reach Harrison, but Harrison had allegedly muted his computer to take a test so he was unaware.

Harrison’s family appealed his suspension, but their appeal was rejected. They are now considering legal action in state court.

WDSU reports that Chelsea Cusimano, attorney for Harrison, said, “This is a terrible overreaction. This is not a child bringing a weapon to school. This was a toy that was in his bedroom. This would be the same as if you had two siblings in a room and one’s ADHD medication was in the background and that child’s getting charged with a drug charge.”

This is how we were able to cyber school. Sacrifices were made.

My next-door neighbor (the one that had covid & recovered) is homeschooling.

She has been for years due to her daughters Med' issues. Of course there are extenuating
circumstances. My neighbor is a former Teacher w/Credentials. Her husband has a good paying
rather secure job.

At a point in our time, this phrase started to be commonly heard: "When did it start, that you had to have two incomes to get by?"

This is when society started down hill IMHO. I put that around mid-1960's

It's a lucky thing that my kids are grown. If something like this happened, I'd be down there like an avenging angel. They'd NEVER forget my visit.
That is very good an noble. It would be the right thing to do. But in these days they would have you arrested and thrown in jail for threatening or whatever. And you would not find any justice. The progressives have destroyed the entire system.

MARANTHA!! Even so, come LORD JESUS!!!
I really fail to understand HOW these "schools" can enforce their Nazi rules on kids that are not even in the school building!!

It is going to require that someone sue the CRAP out of them and win!

You know, I recall when guys drove their trucks to school with rifles on the racks in the back window>>>>there were NO school shootings or mass murders back then. Maybe SOMEONE needs to re-think this whole pile of :poop:!!

When families can get by on one income, not two.
When families learn that some of those things they think are "necessities" really aren't. We've gotten by on one income so I could homeschool our children for 32 years. It can be done, it's just a matter of being willing to sacrifice. Last one is in 10th grade this year so I'm about ready for retirement lol!

"When did it start, that you had to have two incomes to get by?"
When females in their perception became second class citizens and desired "equal pay for equal work."

Free enterprise and entrepreneurship was more than happy to provide.

The unintended consequence was a surplus of labor driving stagnation of male wages. Why pay a man X when you can pay a woman X-B and a man X-B, and select the woman to look so "socially acceptable of Woman's Rights" in doing so?

This was a "two-fer" for business. It is no wonder that the "Woman's Liberation Movement" was so quickly adopted. Its adoption had NOTHING to do with equal pay for equal work, or even hiring the most qualified for the job.

Overreaction is the name of the game with some people, either induced by hysteria or inducing hysteria.

When families can get by on one income, not two.

While I very much understand this, if the kid is already online going school from home, then why not just disconnect from that school and do it themself, know what I mean?

Now, that being said, it really is not as easy and as accurate as people want toys so they both work. That is a grossly oversimplified view, and not one that is based in the reality of today.

if they can't feed themselves and their families and keep a roof over their heads and buy deoderant and water and soap to stay clean so they can go to that job so they can not make enough to have food and water and soap and deodorant and all the other things that one doesnt even think about that are needed, then they have to do something, right? and how many people have said that even with the two of them working, they still are struggling?

there is a part of me that understands what is being said when the statements about people need to sacrifice and do with less and all that, and agree. but that is one one piece of the puzzle, and that is increasingly becoming a non relevant piece for many.

Sacrifices...most cannot understand the concept. They think it is someone else's responsibility to feed, clothe , educate, and give medical attention to their offspring. So they can "live their life". Dumbasses don't realize..they are failing at the greatest test of all.

This too shall pass.
When families can get by on one income, not two.

We got by on one income for many years while I homeschooled my kids, and we were under the official poverty level for much of that time. It's a matter of setting your priorities -- does your child and his or her education matter?

Also, if these young children are already at home doing distance learning, I'm pretty sure there must be an adult in the house with them who could home-school them. My fifteen-year-old grandson is home-schooling himself, with a little supervision from his mother after school (he doesn't like math, so he does that at the table while she fixes supper, for example).

It CAN be done. You just have to decide what is more important.

Here's a little something that a lot of people don't know ... when that happens, some parents have to deal with the men in white coats. Here in Florida it is called Baker Act. You don't get a say and the docs have three days to decide whether you are a danger to yourself or others. Those records are supposed to be private per HIPPA but if it just happens to slip out due to a court case or news article you will be fighting the "crazy" designation for a long time. I know a mom who had this happen to her. It destroyed her reputation, caused marital problems, and eventually when there was a divorce the husband tried to use it against her in the proceedings.

She said years later that if she had to do it all over again she would have simply removed him from school first and then done like these parents are doing ... taken them to court for not protecting her son from an overaged bully (kid was three years older than his classmates due to mainstreaming in a way his issues couldn't be dealt with constructively.)

It truly can be done. We did without at times, but we always had a roof over our heads, plenty of food to eat and 2 good cars to drive (praise the Lord). I built a business during that time, and it is still going strong today (again, praise the Lord). Our kids were homeschooled, we had vacations and we lived a normal life. Now, we are homeschooling our grandchildren, still on one income.

I would like to point out that while things have improved (mostly do to legal cases) when I worked at AFDC, there was a study showing that welfare mothers who obeyed the "rules" and tried to raise their children only on the legal handouts that were provided (AFDC, Food stamps mostly) were at a very high risk of having their children taken away for "neglect," even when judges realized they were not intentionally neglecting their children.

It was just without some "black market" top-ups (babysitting, illegal hairdressing, drug running, prostitution - something) neither enough money nor food stamps were provided to provide what the local CCP demanded in terms of "proper and sufficient care" for a child.

After some court rulings, I know some States did pass laws to try to discourage this, though of course, you have to wonder just how many "people" benefit from having hot and cold running children they could grab when they felt like it.

But this really does lead to a home-schooling issue even for some couples - that issue is that some states have a rather high bar of what they consider to be "acceptable" when it comes to kids living in poverty - especially if those kids are the sort that child protective services have no trouble placing (babies, young children, non-disabled and white or just slightly brown).

Sadly there are a lot of people (like my sister's family) where even before she had her last illness, her husband's full-time job had no benefits and didn't pay enough rent for them to live anywhere but his bosses empty property. Once she became ill they almost ended up on the street a number of times (and she did end up living in a car at one point).

She's gone now and the older kids are old enough to work and contribute, but without them, I expect my former-brother-in-law and my youngest niece might be in a homeless shelter or living in a van behind his bosses garage.

When the teacher "allegedly" tried to contact the student, it was for what reason? Was it to warn him about having a BB gun in view? If so, then a "warning" was the first action. When the computer was dicovered on mute then why couldn't she CALL the mother with the same warning?

I know why. It's power-hunger and licking her lips, she just couldn't resist, nor could the school board in action.

I hope they sue the pants off them!!!

9-Year Old Suspended For BB Gun At Home Not An Isolated Incident

9-Year Old Suspended For BB Gun At Home Not An Isolated Incident

For a couple of days now we’ve been talking about Ka Mauri Harrison, the 4th grader from Harvey, Louisiana who was suspended from his virtual schooling for six days after a teacher spotted him picking up a BB gun from his bedroom floor and putting it away so his younger brother didn’t trip over it. Not only has Harrison received some backing from high profile groups like the NRA, Louisiana’s Attorney General is now investigating to determine if the young man’s rights were violated by the school suspension.

Harrison’s attorney, meanwhile, says she’s been flooded with calls from around the country since the student’s story began receiving national attention.

By Friday, the family’s attorney, Chelsea Cusimano, had fielded requests from most national news networks, including ABC, CBS and CNN, as well as newspapers including the Washington Post and USA Today.
But other messages poured in, including tales of similar incidents in other states. A family in Louisville emailed to say that a gun was seen during their son’s virtual lesson and he was not suspended. A man from New Jersey wanted to speak with the Harrisons because his son had been suspending for holding a Nerf gun while doing online class. Cusimano said one person requested her legal aid in a similar matter.
“It’s something that’s not comprehensible,” she said of the response.
Harrison is at least the fourth student that I’m aware of who’s faced disciplinary action after inadvertently displaying a BB gun, Nerf gun, or airsoft gun during virtual class sessions over the past few months. Back in June a Baltimore County, Maryland family had their home searched after a teacher spotted a BB gun on the bedroom wall of an 11-year old. In Colorado, two students received visits from police after similar incidents involving toy guns.

Obviously not every incident is going to result in a news story. You need parents who are willing to speak out and take their case to the press, and then you need reporters who are interested in covering what happened. Given the fact that Cusimano’s phone has been ringing off the hook with parents who want to share similar stories about their kids, it’s pretty apparent that these aren’t just a handful of isolated incidents that we’re talking about.
My advice for parents is to be proactive. Contact your school district now and ask them what their policies are when it comes to virtual learning and the inadvertent display of a toy gun or a BB gun during class. If you’re not satisfied with the response, talk to your school board representative and share your concerns, and be prepared to show up at the next school board meeting. There’s strength in numbers, so try to get other parents involved as well.

Ka Mauri’s parents aren’t giving up their fight, and they say they’ve been amazed by the support the family has received.
“It’s been overwhelming,” Nyron Harrison said. Messages have been flooding in through Facebook and email, he said. “We’ve been getting a lot of invites to gun ranges and different gun clubs.”
Messages have come in from “West Virginia, Colorado, a lot of places,” he said.
Ka’Mauri understands a little bit of what is going on, his father said.

“I try to keep it on the positive note and give him the feeling that he’s done nothing wrong,” he said. “A lot of people want to help him.”
Indeed we do, but we also know that Ka Mauri isn’t the only kid who’s had do deal with an insane response by a school district when it comes to toy or BB guns. This isn’t a problem relegated only to anti-gun states or deep-blue Democratic-run school districts. The problem is clearly more widespread than many may have realized, and it’s time that parents start speaking up to ensure that kids aren’t punished for simply being kids.

Which is why when schooling by Zoom (or similar) the camera should be facing a perfectly blank wall.

I have a world map on my wall, but -- yeah -- I may need to take that down at some point.

Parents (and students) all need to take a few minutes the night before or right before class time and do a little quick housekeeping, even if the camera is facing the wall. Anything questionable should be put away. An ounce of prevention . . .

Saw some podcast the other day. Guy had put up a green screen and had an ocean view behind him. However, it DID distract me watching the waves go in and out. But almost anyone could build a moveable screen and use it behind the kids.

We should not have to do this though. However, I would not want snoops in my house. Especially snoops with cameras.

Agreed. However, it goes back to a point I made on another thread. It's 2020 and remaining gray demands a little extra work and changes in house policies. A lot of us never dreamed that we'd be using the computer so much for meetings/classes.

We now have the potential for a bunch of busy bodies to see the inside of our homes and make judgments about us, so an ounce of prevention is prudent, whether that's making sure the computer camera is facing the wall or monitoring the computer usage of young adults.

WHEN are parents going to get smart and home-school their children instead of using these virtual public schools?!?
