Finally not a lurker!
Well, the g/f locked the keys in the car to kick things off.. Then I noticed the house was getting cool and sonuvagun the thermostat was dark- time for a new CR 2032 which, hardened prepper that I am, had several downstairs. Sigh...preps are no good if you can't find them. I suspect the g/f moved stuff around, with commendable if somewhat misplaced zeal. Anyway, folks, Happy New Year and I thank God it is nothing more serious.

It's starting out to be a rough week, for sure...

About 15 minutes ago, I came back from working downstairs and found my handed down from my Granny 9" cast iron skillet SOAKING IN THE DISHPAN!!! For a moment, I was paralysed! I couldn't think! We've been married 25 years, and he soaked my skillet in the dishpan! And my shovel would only go in the ground about 4" and the neighbor says he's waiting on a part for his backhoe so he can't help me out....

NOOOOOO, not the cast iron...WHAT IS WRONG WITH PEOPLE!! Surely, the judge will find you innocent by reason of momentary insanity. It could have been worse, he could have put it in the dishwasher....just sayin'.

I have a thermostat battery change reminder on my computer calendar >>> same dumbazz thing happened to me but I didn't recognize the problem immediately - thought it was a transformer again ....

when people pop up on FB with a furnace problem - I always mention the thermostat check - there's a built-in battery minder but you'd have to be studying the display to see it

Blah. If it's seasoned right, soaking is fine.

A fix for all the world's owies...rub a little bacon grease on it. ;)

Rather than make multiple trips to Lowes I called Horizon out here. They sent a tech who determined that the water alert- kind of a hockey puck that shuts things down if there is a flood- malfunctioned. No charge which was nice so I made sure he left with a variety pack of beers. Since it is warm here the episode wasn't too bad.

To expand a bit- the washing machine died two weeks ago, the dishwasher is gasping with the dryer soon to follow, so I'm replacing all three. Most disastrously the coffee machine died. A rough couple of days there...
How can you claim preppier status without a old percolator coffee brewer:ld:

That seasoning will snap right back in place once you've made a few pans of corn bread or biscuits in your skillet.

I was traumatized early on as a very young wife when I took my neighbors a cake only to walk in their kitchen and see three of the nicest skillets ever in their dishwasher. They were big and well seasoned. This woman was the definition of a true southern cook. I must have gasped because she just laughed and said at her house everything went in the dishwasher and it didn't hurt them a bit. She'd been using them ever since she got married ...over fifty years.

BTW, I was taking them a three layer chocolate and vanilla checkerboard cake. If you were ever going to show off your skills, this was the woman you wanted to impress. They never could figure out how I did it and I can't remember myself but I learned it from a Country Living magazine. At the time I didn't realize I was about to take a break on the hobby cooking and be so busy I could barely cook a full meal for three years.
