Vandal Beheads Statue of Jesus for ‘Wrong Skin Color’

Police have arrested a man suspected of beheading and toppling a historic statue of Jesus in El Paso’s Saint Patrick’s Cathedral on Tuesday.

The suspect, 30-year-old Isaiah Cantrell, said that he destroyed the 90-year-old statue because Jesus’s skin color was wrong and should have been darker.

The “skin color of the statue was the wrong color,” Cantrell said, according to a court affidavit. “Jesus was Jewish and therefore should be a darker skin color.”

The attack on the statue of the Sacred Heart of Jesus, which was located behind the main altar of the church, occurred at around 10:00 am, when the church was open for private prayer.

“This statue is one of my favorite representations of Jesus — his arms open wide in welcome, his heart aflame with love for us. I would often take inspiration from this image as I prepared for Mass,” said El Paso Bishop Mark Seitz in a statement.

“As sad as I am to see a statue attacked and destroyed, I am grateful that it was not a living person. But a statue, particularly this statue, concretizes and connects us to persons and ideals that are not visible to our eyes. They reveal to us realities that are close to us, but unseen,” he said.

“At this point we do not know anything about the person who carried out this assault, but he certainly must be a person who is greatly disturbed to have attacked this peaceful place in our city and this image of the King of Peace. I hope this might be the impetus for him to receive the help he needs. He will be in my prayers,” Seitz said.

“I am devastated at this irreplaceable loss as I know members of this parish community and the whole Church of El Paso will be,” Seitz concluded. “In this moment we will reach out in confidence to the One this statue represented, and I know he will console us.”

Last year, arsonists set fire to three Catholic churches in the El Paso area, including St. Patrick Cathedral. The cases are still unresolved, and the FBI has offered rewards totaling $15,000 for information leading to the arrest of the perpetrators.

Neither here nor there.

So, I've worked for four different jewish families as a live in nanny back in the 80's, I spent a lot of time with those families, went on holidays with them, got to visit with extended family members and the like. This kid is a dumbass and a racist if he believes that all jews have dark skin, many that I knew had blond hair and blue eyes, one was a redhead with green eyes, all with pale white skin... cause you know not all jews in the last 400 years came from the middle east... again this kid is a stupid dumbass in serious need of an education. The redhead, her dad's parents came from western Russia during WW2, her mom's parents fled Italy during WW2.

Of course Mr. Cantrell PRESUMES to know EXACTLY what Jesus looked like.

And anything else has to meet with his approval.

Jesus must have had darker skin, because in the bible somewhere it says that Jesus "had hair like lambs wool" which means he did NOT have brown straight hair like all the pictures show. I believe he had darker skin., and i don't believe he had "blue" eyes. He would not have blue eyes if he had hair like lambs wool. They have lied to us threw out the centuries. The picture they show of Jesus being "white" with straight brown/blond hair and blue eyes i believe is a lie. Most people in that part of the world back then were of darker skin.

My mind's interpretation of what Christ looked/looks like has absolutely zero to do with my salvation which is the only thing that matters. Everyone grows up differently, when I think of Christ He looks like what most people probably picture him as. Am I right? I doubt it. But I also doubt that I'll be judged in any way if I'm wrong. And if I am wrong and am judged for it I am forgiven because of what He did for us on the cross. It's simply a non-issue.

Different cultures picture Jesus differently.

I think that last one is someone's idea of a "funny" - but I imagine Jesus would laugh.

Traditional Middle Eastern sheep tend to be "hair" sheep, and fat tail sheep, and don't resemble our fluffy modern breeds. Here is a link to a particularly striking example, but others like the Karakul, are also more hairy than woolly.

The description could also refer to coveted lamb pelts (if they were traded back then), the coats of unborn/newborn lambs of the ME breeds that are valued for their wavy and highly glossy texture. Much more closely resembles wavy Caucasian hair, than any sort of a 'fro. My Shetlands (another primitive breed) were born this way. The pelt is very fine, reflective and beautiful. Also, reddish browns are common.

Jesus will dispense justice to him.
I hope he doesn't see it coming.

I QUOTED GOD HIMSELF. Does He sound "Taliban" to you? Just sayin.'

There is a difference between statues and graven images. It is a matter of INTENT.

No one is praying to that statue of Jesus. Maybe some people are praying in its direction, but it serves as a visible reminder of the actual object of their faith. It helps some people concentrate. That is not idolatry.

It would be idolatry if they expected it to answer their prayers.

See? You made me go and do it. I didn't want to but you clearly needed to hear it. Statues aren't idols until you start assigning them power and authority. When they're just art, they're not idols.

Saved, to glorify God.
Don’t look for God to “be like YOU”.
It is WE who are to strive to “be like God”
We were created in the image of God, not the reverse.
Appearance is the LEAST of your worries
when you commit to walking as a faithful witness to all of the Reality of God.
Things like truth, love, power, fearlessness, compassion, holiness, justice, wisdom, righteousness, will make God’s presence with, and within you recognizable immediately whether you are a 6 foot 6 giant of a man or a 4 foot tall paralyzed Indian street beggar.
It begins with Jesus.

Well, the reverse corollary of that is the swastika. It was a little-known symbol before the Germans co-opted it. Now you never see it anywhere. The LDS church feels that the cross was originally pagan. Being co-opted for “good” doesn’t alter its history.
