Oath Keepers founder sentenced to 18 years in Jan. 6 seditious conspiracy case

Stewart Rhodes, who said after the Capitol attack that the rioters “should have brought rifles," received the longest sentence of any Jan. 6 defendant to date.

Updated May 25, 2023, 1:12 PM EDT

WASHINGTON — The founder of the far-right Oath Keepers has been sentenced to 18 years in federal prison in connection with the Jan. 6 attack on the Capitol following his conviction on seditious conspiracy.

The sentence for Stewart Rhodes is the longest imposed on a Jan. 6 defendant to date. “You, sir, present an ongoing threat and a peril to this country and to the republic and to the very fabric of this democracy," Judge Amit Mehta said before handing down the sentence.

Rhodes was convicted of seditious conspiracy in November along with Kelly Meggs, a fellow Oath Keepers member who will be sentenced later Thursday afternoon.

"They won't fear us until we come with rifles in hand," Rhodes wrote in a message ahead of the Jan. 6 attack. After the attack, in a recording that was played in court during his trial, he said his only regret was that they “should have brought rifles.”

When given the chance to speak before sentencing, Rhodes, wearing an orange prison jumpsuit, called himself a "political prisoner" and said he believes the only crime he committed was opposing those who are “destroying our country.” He added that he hopes former President Donald Trump wins in 2024.

Mehta told Rhodes that he was found guilty of seditious conspiracy “not because of your beliefs, not because you supported the other guy, not because Joe Biden is president right now,” but because of the facts of the case, and his actions before, during and after Jan. 6.

“You are not a political prisoner, Mr. Rhodes,” Mehta said.

Rhodes and Meggs were put on trial alongside Jessica Watkins, Kenneth Harrelson and Thomas Caldwell, fellow Oath Keepers who were convicted of obstruction of an official proceeding and aiding and abetting, but not seditious conspiracy. Watkins and Harrelson will be sentenced on Friday.

Rhodes took the stand in his case, saying that the other members of the Oath Keepers were "stupid" to storm the Capitol and that he disagreed with those who went inside; Rhodes did not enter the building. “I had no idea that any Oath Keeper was even thinking about going inside or would go inside,” Rhodes said.

But the government also produced messages in which Rhodes said he thought that Jan. 6 was the last opportunity to stop what he saw as a takeover of the government.

"On the 6th, they are going to put the final nail in the coffin of this Republic, unless we fight our way out. With Trump (preferably) or without him, we have no choice," Rhodes wrote in a message ahead of Jan. 6.

He also celebrated Oath Keepers' actions in the immediate aftermath of the attack, after meeting with other members of the group at an Olive Garden in Virginia that night.

“Patriots, it was a long day but a day when patriots began to stand," Rhodes wrote the night of Jan. 6. "Stand now or kneel forever. Honor your oaths. Remember your legacy."

Prior to Thursday's sentence, Peter Schwartz, who was armed with a wooden tire knocker and engaged in a series of assaults on officers during the Capitol attack, had received the longest time behind bars for a Jan. 6 defendant: just over 14 years. Schwartz had 38 prior convictions.

It's essentially a life sentence. He'll be 75 years old when he gets out. Average American male lives to be about 77. Whether or not he's a .gov plant, they're sending a message.

the bastards are attempting a TEACHING MOMENT here . . . teaching YOU to be ever more fearful of THEM. not that YOU HERE don't already know that - but the real insanity is there are honest to goodness sentient and allegedly human beings who think this BULLSHIT FARCE was not only an excellent strike against the collective evils of nationalism and MAGATS in general but against domestic terrorism in particular. even more so - those who think the sentence was TOO LENIENT.

I think the take away might be that if there is a next time, the protestors will be armed. The situation will deteriorate with rapidity. And because folks generally don't think very far ahead, if they do win the initial objective, whatever that might happen to be, what then?

The only way to defeat the United States is to eliminate the word United. The Communist/Democrats are succeeding in that goal. They have us fighting each other while they are a united front with one objective which is the destruction of this country.

"You, sir, present an ongoing threat and a peril to this country and to the republic and to the very fabric of this democracy," Judge Amit Mehta said before handing down the sentence". The use of the term democracy tells you all you need to know. America is a Constitutional Republic. Furthermore, the founding fathers specifically said America is NOT a democracy and to defend against it becoming one. Democracy is the same thing as mob rule were the majority can strip your inalienable rights away and / or create special rights or privileges for themselves.

For those who paid attention, the fraud was rampant and in your face many times. It took almost six months of 24/7 propaganda before the "so called" media as well as many hollywood elites pushing the false narrative china joe won before we could even see the illusion of him having actual supporters. Even then it was not enough to win a local election in a small city let alone a presidential race.

The fraud was never disproven. All the socialist democrats ever managed to do was buy time to destroy evidence and steer the cases to judges and courts sympathetic to their socialist / fascist cause.

Nonstop false flags in the form of investigations, impeachments, and stories from the media that were known to be false but used to push the desired narrative. All this with a host of socialist / fascist sympathizers scattered throughout the doj, dhs, fbi, cia, entertainment industry, media, and all the socialist democrats as well as the rinos.

The politically persecuted participants of J6 knew this well as did a large percentage of Americas population that witnessed the "in your face" corruption, lies, and coordinated coup take place in real time. Those who paid attention could clearly see the planned destruction of our Constitutional Republic unfolding before their eyes.

J6 was a legal protest with the ONLY fatalities being protestors consisting of one unarmed female vet murdered in cold blood by a known Trump hating capitol police officer and the other being another female beaten unconscious by capitol police and left to die while she was trying to retreat. Additionally, we should never forget that most of the legitimate protestors were let in by the capital police, escorted throughout the building by the capital police, and never told to leave by the capital police. There were many government informants, undercover officers, and paid agitators encouraging and committing acts of violence and vandalism which is likely the reason they refuse to release the thousands of hours of surveillance footage for public viewing (at least until they can erase all the footage of their own crimes).

In contrast we saw cities being burned, businesses looted, violent attacks on police stations and other government offices as well as any civilians who were not part of what was an actual violent insurrection being praised by the socialist/ fascist party members with most of those perpetrating these actual crimes receiving little or no punishment the majority of the time.

As final note, with our economy tanking, more corruption being exposed weekly, the very real possibility of WW3, and hindsight of what has already been done. Just how far do you think they will be willing to go in 2024 to assure our Constitutional Republic falls before any of them can be held responsible for the acts of treason they have committed against the American citizens.

I believe this is the one.

Possibly the Deep State looking to "cover." Or "eliminate."

CORRECTION

McWhirter (2nd in command) was FBI informant to "rat-out" Rhodes.

More at the article.

But during an impromptu hearing on Tuesday morning, the lawyers said that Mr. McWhirter had been taken off a plane while traveling to Washington to testify after suffering a heart attack.

Because of his medical condition, the lawyers said, Mr. McWhirter was unable to appear on the witness stand on Tuesday. While the defense lawyers still want him to testify, it remained unclear when he might be able to do so.

This is a ruse. They're protecting his identity so he can be Federally "witness protected." One expects an "affidavit" will suffice.

So much for confronting your accuser.

You guys are thinking of Ray Epps. As the other yokel in this J6 mess…

“Ray Epps, a Jan. 6 protester now at the center of a far-right conspiracy, says he relives the Capitol riot every day
60-minutes
BY BILL WHITAKER
APRIL 23, 2023 / 7:00 PM / CBS NEWS
For millions of consumers of conservative news, Ray Epps is a notorious villain — a provocateur responsible for turning peaceful protests on January 6th into a violent assault on the U.S. Capitol.

The irony is that Epps was a passionate supporter of President Trump who went to Washington to protest the 2020 election. But his often contradictory behavior that day spawned a full-fledged conspiracy theory, casting him as a government agent who incited an insurrection.

Today, Epps is in hiding, after death threats forced him to sell his home. So who is Ray Epps? Tonight, you'll hear from the government, and the man himself.”

The New York Times news article referenced above has basically been discredited by others referenced above as a "puff piece."

CBS follows along waving the same banner.

Best is to read/hear both and make up your own mind. Keep in mind that the local Arizona(?) FBI office "protected" Epps for a while at the beginning of inquiry into him, and probably still does.

"Why do you want to know where Epps lives?"

The Youtube video associated with the Tucker Carlson/Darren Beattie narrative above. (RT 10:30 or so)

Supposedly Tucker Carlson was to do a "follow up" to the Epps story on the night he was cancelled.

And Revolver has "consolidated" all information related to the "Fedsurrection" at Jimmy Dore: All the proof you need that J6 was a massive "setup" in one convenient place... - Revolver News

If I'm going to be sentenced to life in prison for my political beliefs...

There's no reason why I shouldn't start shooting judges..

Yeah, like it was an intended outcome of a train of thought.....and IMHO it likely wouldn't be limited to judges if someone were to come to that conclusion....

Guns remain the number one killer of children in America.
Cherry picking of data. Choosing your age group range to support a supposition.

If infants are included, rankings of the leading causes of death for children up to age 18 change. Congenital abnormalities are the leading cause of death in infants, and surpass the number of firearm deaths among all children up to age 18. In 2020, there were 4,403 deaths from congenital abnormalities, 3,141 deaths from short gestation, or preterm birth and low birth weight, and 1,389 deaths from sudden infant death syndrome. There were 11 infant deaths caused by a firearm in 2020.

A similar inaccuracy has been considered in formation of Auto Insurance rates. Younger drivers are considered "inexperienced" and are charged more for insurance - and yet they don't have the most fatalities.

In reality the data shows that drivers 24-34 are the most dangerous.

Listening to guest on Travis and Sexton who's saying that it's likely they're going to go after Trump with the same charges in a DC court.
Why not? That’s what they do and have done.
It would seem to me that many people would see the take away from this as "You might as well bring your rifle and go all the way since the punishment will be the same anyway". I'm pretty sure that's not the message they're trying to send, or maybe it is?

Judge Amit Mehta said Watkins’ efforts at the Capitol were “aggressive” and said she did not have immediate remorse, even though she has since apologized.

“Your role that day was more aggressive, more assaultive, more purposeful than perhaps others’. And you led others to fulfill your purposes,” Mehta said. “And there was not in the immediate aftermath any sense of shame or contrition, just the opposite. Your comments were celebratory and lacked a real sense of the gravity of that day and your role in it.”

Now contrast this with ray epps who is likely one of the most filmed agitators of January 5th and 6th and who is NOT being politically persecuted. Still think epps is not working with the socialist/fascist elements with the federal government?

If only the public could see the thousands of hours of video, audio, and photographic evidence from Jan 6. We would know exactly who was working for the corrupt elements with our government as they will be the ones who are not politically persecuted.

This a case of "inadequate disclosure." You as defendant have a right to full disclosure of information to charges against you. And this is reason to contest adjudication.

Ray Epps has been sufficiently documented to allow an honest prosecutor to prefer charges - but the Feds choose not.

Others are likely sufficiently documented to CLEAR them of charges - similar to the Jacob Chansley Shaman dude. But these others are not easily separated wheat from chaff like Chansley - it takes more than a cursory examination to track an individual IF THEY'RE NOT WEARING HORNS, AND CLAD IN BUFFALO HIDE.

But if the films are kept "under wraps" more than a cursory examination is not possible.

Marjorie Taylor Greene renews call for public release of Jan. 6 tapes (5/8/2023)

Right now to this horse's knowledge, the 44,000 hours of films are still in the hands of McCarthy. Tucker Carlson was allowed to examine the tapes in creation of the Jacob Chansley interest piece.

And there is little assurance the films are still complete.

Any more than the 2020 Ballot images from Fulton County Georgia are complete. Recent article (proof check) allows that a previous "misinformation" discounting is incorrect: ballot images WERE missing - but the 2020 law did not require maintenance of ballots for recount. So they weren't.

How convenient.

Michael T. Morley, Sheila M. McDevitt Professor of Law at Florida State University College of Law, explained to Reuters, “it appears that, at the time of the 2020 election, nothing in Rule 183-1-12-.13 expressly required election officials themselves to keep either the original electronic ballot images, or an electronic copy of them, after the period for requesting a recount had elapsed to make them available for public inspection.”

He told Reuters the amended rule now “appears to resolve any potential ambiguity or uncertainty about the scope of election officials’ obligation to themselves retain a copy of ballot images.”

Judge Mehta is a plain, ordinary, garden variety Marxist, out to punish free thoughts and action. It is, what it is. Impeachment time for the judge.

Yet...

So, we're supposed to believe that the FBI has a prime suspect down to the verifiable license plate of the car he got into after dropping off the pipe bombs, but has oddly just decided that not only will they NOT pursue him, but they won't share that info with Congress?

What a crock of sh!t!

Consider how ferociously the #FBI has gone after a frail grandmother who simply walked around the Capitol, but they are gonna let the pipe bomber off the hook entirely?

They are ridiculously putting people in prison for years for similarly daring to "parade" in the Capitol, but they're gonna let this chump slide after placing bombs at the RNC & DNC HQ'?

GTFOH
That makes no sense.

So, I believe that Occam's Razor applies.

We have to now assume the guy is absolutely tied to them in some manner - unless, of course, someone can come up with a better reason.

Agreed. Clearly, it's one of theirs. No other explanation makes sense.

So if these Oath Keeper folks are getting LOOOOONG prison sentences for "seditious conspiracy" stuff......what will the communists and demo-craps get for deliberately trying to undermine and destroy this country and it's Constitution? Asking for a friend.

I think you already know the answer to this.

Until the corrupt on both sides of the aisle are prosecuted to the fullest extent of the law for ALL their crimes against America we will never have a fair and impartial justice system.

We are currently living under a tyrannical government much worse than the british rule our founders fought and sacrificed to free themselves from.
