Prep Genrl Weekly Prep Thread: March 12~18, 2023

Mother Nature is showing her attitude this week - temps have ranged between single digits and the 50's. It was 10* F and spitting snow when I woke up this morning; it's almost 14*F now. Then again, it's March, so what did I expect  I surely do pity the neighbor lady who will be returning from Florida to this.

Early this morning, I heard noises at my east bedroom window where I have one of my bird feeders so opened my eyes - then got up and looked out the window - birds everywhere!! Cardinals, yellow finches, red finches (bits of color showing up on their grey winter plumage), chickadees, tufted titmice, blue jays, nuthatches, downy and hairy woodpeckers, juncos and other's whose names escape me... I'll need to go out in a bit to refill their feeders as they are chowing down. There are quite a few red-wing blackbirds in the yard as well - Hubby said he saw them earlier this month. Those are my harbingers of spring, so I am glad to see them.

This morning is going to be spent trying to beat the clutter in to submission, and organizing some paperwork. I have to pick the two younger grandsons up around noon to spend the night - maybe they can help me get their room back under control . The younger one isn't going to want to let me donate any of the toys they've outgrown, so I'll see if I can't get him to put them in a storage tote for the great-grandchild (who will be here some time around September.) After I take them home tomorrow, I'll scrub up whatever is in the totes for the GGC. Older grandson is going to want to bake something - I'm trying to decide between oatmeal cookies and oatmeal cake. Either way, I probably need to plump up my golden raisins steaming them over some hot water.

Prep plans for this week:
*Prepare for appointment with new MD - have it ready to hand to her: med list, allergies, H&P.
*Go to the pool at least twice - exercise; good for the body and the brain.
*Find the recipe for homemade wet wipes and make up a batch to take to track meets.
*Sort through the grandsons' summer clothes - move middle grandson's stuff to younger grandson's dresser.
*Hit thrift stores in two towns to drop off the outgrown stuff and hopefully find middle grandson some things to wear when he is here - I swear that a couple of weeks ago he was still shorter than me; now he's a couple of inches taller
*Get track meets written in on the big calendar (Hubby just took it down for me so I can lay it flat to write on it.)
*Make grocery list for small local store: new ad for this coming week shows that ground beef - chuck and round is on sale so time to make more meatloaf mix.
*Work on garden plan - including seed list.
*Figure out where they moved the recycling bins in work town - I have to go through that town for an appointment.

Well, I'd better get up and get some of that stuff done so I'll be on time to pick up the boys!

Take care all; hope you have a great weekend!

I need help. Do any of you ladies have oily hair? I do. I've been using Suave Daily Clarifying shampoo for oily hair for years. I loved it. Now, Walmart or any of the other stores I shop carry it any longer. I've looked everywhere. I stopped in at Walgreen to pick up Cary's RX and found a daily clarifying shampoo there for oily hair, but it was $17 for a small bottle! I have long hair and a small bottle won't last me very long, and it costs more than what I want to pay.

I was thinking of trying to make my own, but I have no clue as to where to start. I was wondering if ya'll have any ideas or recipes I could make with stored products. I still have a good stock of my shampoo, but when that runs out, I'll have to make my own if I can.

Sherree An idea is to check out DIY shampoo. recipes on line. I chose one that only had a smidge almond oil. I am traveling at present but can share later. I go thru periods of making it and am constantly tweaking it. But I think I have found the recipe for us finally!

I would love your recipe! When you have time. Is it made with ingredients that are easily stored?

Yes and I have prepped several years worth. The almond oil is the only thing I worry about turning rancid but for now…stored for 3 years… no problem. The oil could probably be left out. I do it for conditioner. Will send it when we get home.

Thank you so much. It will certainly be appreciated!

Got to go run through stores today. It was an Easter candy hunt for my son. And it had to be done now, so that I have time to order online if I need to. And I will need to online order his rabbit. But that's it.

Since I was surprised with the news of no time limit, I also got into Sam's Club. There are now 8 additional Bushel & Berry plants for the yard. And I got to stop at a new plant nursery where I found a bay laurel.

Next stop was Lowes. The garden center was massively disappointing at that point. Oh well. I did find two of the roof things I was hunting for but not the third. Asked Dad to look over near him. And he can look in Scottsboro on the way over if needed.

Dad got a large sander and an engraver while he was down in FL. Both will help with the side business he's trying to build. As soon as he sends me pictures and prices, I'll put them up in the sales section. We are both laughing because the one design that neither of us really likes is the one that sells out first when he goes to shows.

Son got to put some of his abandonment fears to rest. He had a good time at friend's house. He didn't feel sick. And Mom came back to get him. But he was definitely happy to get home.

Kyrsyan... remind me this fall, about the jewelweed seeds! It grows everywhere here...

Hopefully at least one of us will remember by then. And I've got lots and lots and lots to plant between now and then. And I still can't find pineberries locally. So I may mail order them. Or wait until the locals, who are growing them at home, throw some up on marketplace.

I hit a chicken breast sale last Thursday - ended up buying 8lbs and spent Friday canning all of it. I do like the convenience of always keeping several months ahead on it. Beef was not that good of a deal but I did end up with 6lbs and went ahead and canned it too.

Now looking for a good potato sale. Seems it’s always something.

For people that have occasional bathroom issues. If you can't go number 2, try 2 prunes or a small glass of prune juice followed by a cup of hot coffee. This was the advice given to my great aunt more than 40 years ago by her dr. It worked for her.

Disclaimer. I am not a dr. This is not medical advice. For information only.
Another pretty cheap and very effective option is Ground Flax Seed powder. Walmart carries a 1 lb pkg for $3.48. Lasts a long time. Take 2 tbsp and sprinkle over fruit with yogurt at breakfast or even mix in water and chug.

I am allergic to perfume/scents and the only shampoo I can use is Suave strawberry. I was using Ivory unscented shampoo and conditioner when they stopped making it. So, when I found the Suave that I could use, I went and bought a dozen bottles which I'm still using. Each store only had a few bottles, so I went to numerous stores to acquire my supply.

I'd suggest you check as many stores as you can that carry shampoo including grocery stores to see if you can find a supply. Usually when something is discontinued, they don't pull it from the shelves either leaving it until sold or pull and put in discount a bin. Hopefully, you'll get lucky and find a few bottles which will give you time to find a proper replacement.

Hired some teenage help today and got the garden cleaned up. I should have done it last fall, but I was preoccupied! I got a few things picked up, but need to do some major cleaning tomorrow and maybe start some herbs. I can direct seed if I need to, so if it doesn't happen, that's OK. I also need to finish preserving the carrots, cabbage, onions, and squash from last year.

It’s my understanding that ground flax seeds lose their nutrients quickly so I have one of those little electric coffee grinders and grind my fresh for each use.
