Twitter suspends accounts of several journalists with no explanation

December 15, 2022 / 10:53 PM / CBS/AP

Twitter on Thursday suspended the accounts of journalists who cover the social media platform and its new owner Elon Musk, including reporters working for The New York Times, Washington Post, CNN and other publications.

The company hasn't explained why it took down the accounts and made their profiles and past tweets disappear.

The sudden suspension of news reporters followed Musk's decision Wednesday to permanently ban an account that automatically tracked the flights of his private jet using publicly available data. It came despite a pledge by Musk to keep the account up because of his free speech principles.

Twitter also on Wednesday changed its rules to prohibit the sharing of another person's current location without their consent.

Several of the reporters suspended Thursday night had been writing about that new policy and Musk's rationale for imposing it, which involved his allegations about a stalking incident that affected his family on Tuesday night in Los Angeles.

"Same doxxing rules apply to 'journalists' as to everyone else," Musk tweeted Thursday.

"Doxxing" refers to disclosing online someone's identity, address, or other personal details.

CNN said in a statement that "the impulsive and unjustified suspension of a number of reporters, including CNN's Donie O'Sullivan, is concerning but not surprising."

"Twitter's increasing instability and volatility should be of incredible concern for everyone who uses Twitter," CNN's statement added. "We have asked Twitter for an explanation, and we will reevaluate our relationship based on that response."

Musk last month reinstated several previously banned accounts, including those of former President Donald Trump, musician Kanye West and Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene.

This also comes as Musk has, over the past few weeks, overseen the release of what he has called the "Twitter Files," which he claims show that the company suppressed free speech prior to his taking over as owner in October. The files consist of thousands of internal company documents which detail content moderation decisions.

Musk has so far utilized three journalists to curate the release of the files: Matt Taibbi, Bari Weiss and Michael Shellenberger.

In a Dec. 2 tweet, Musk wrote regarding the Twitter Files in response to criticism from some users: "Twitter acting by itself to suppress free speech is not a 1st amendment violation, but acting under orders from the government to suppress free speech, with no judicial review, is."

Twitter suspends CNN, NYT, WaPo journalists critical of Elon Musk, sparks viral uproar
Joseph Wulfsohn
5 - 6 minutes

There was utter commotion on Twitter after it was discovered that prominent media critics of its owner Elon Musk were simultaneously banned from the platform without explanation.

Among those whose accounts were permanently suspended include CNN correspondent Donie O'Sullivan, New York Times technology reporter Ryan Mac, Washington Post reporter Drew Harwell, The Intercept journalist Micah Lee, Mashable writer Matt Binder, former MSNBC host Keith Olbermann and former Vox journalist Aaron Rupar.

Additionally, the Twitter account belonging to the social media rival Mastodon, which served as a safe haven for liberals who initially fled Twitter following Musk's takeover (many made their way back to Twitter).

Musk, who described himself as being a free-speech absolutist, received backlash for the purge of his critics, many calling for him to explain why those accounts were suspended.

Many on the left are sounding the alarm about Elon Musk’s Twitter takeover.

"This is outrageous," Fourth Watch media critic Steve Krakauer reacted.

"Hot take - Being the worst account on Twitter isn't reason alone for suspension and Musk promised transparency around these things so would like to hear why," Versus Media podcast host Stephen L. Miller tweeted.

"f you start banning accounts willy nilly regardless of how much they suck without transparency, then you’ve become the very thing you swore against. we need answers @elonmusk," Habbibi Bros podcast co-host Siraj Hashmi similarly expressed.

"In my opinion Aaron Rupar is one of the biggest lying no-character sources of mis/disinformation on the internet. But I haven’t seen a compelling case for his suspension from Twitter," Fox News host Will Cain wrote.

"Musk is a blatant hypocrite when it comes to free speech," New York Times corespondent Trip Gabriel wrote.

"Simple: If Twitter is suspending people because they are reporting on or critical of Musk, then current version is no better than the old version w arbitrary and questionable enforcement. If it's suspending people for violating a clear rule, it's on them. The why matters," conservative writer A.G. Hamilton tweeted.

Twitter did not immediately respond to Fox News request for comment.

Musk was previously criticized for banning @ElonJet, the account that exclusively tracks Musk's private jet usage. Musk claimed the account was suspended due to a "physical safety violation" since it was "doxxing real-time location info," sharing video of a "crazy stalker" that was harassing his child in Los Angeles thinking the Twitter owner was present. Musk threatened to take legal action against the account's user.

Some of the recent headlines written by the journalists that were banned include O'Sullivan's "Twitter suspends account that tracked Musk’s private jet, despite billionaire’s ‘free speech’ pledge" on CNN's website, Mac's "Twitter Suspends Over 25 Accounts That Track Billionaires’ Private Planes" on The New York Times' site and Harwell's Musk bans Twitter account tracking his jet, threatens to sue creator" published by The Washington Post.

The New York Times released a statement saying, "Tonight's suspension of the Twitter accounts of a number of prominent journalists, including the New York Times's Ryan Mac, is questionable and unfortunate. Neither The Times nor Ryan have received any explanation about why this occurred. We hope that all of the journalists' accounts are reinstated and that Twitter provides a satisfying explanation for its action."

Since taking over Twitter, Musk has restored several accounts that were banned by previous leadership including former President Trump, the Babylon Bee, Dr. Jordan Peterson among others.

Here's the thing, Elon owns Twitter. Elon makes the rules. Even if doxxing someone, or helping to in some way, wasn't forbidden before, he can make it forbidden. And no one can really come up with any type of argument that says that it's okay to dox people or assist in doing it.

I give up.

Now what, LOL? Sigh.... guess I'll have to amble over to his twitter, which I've been sincerely trying to avoid, just so I don't get locked into all this Elon stuff. He's got half the world gaga, he doesn't need me too. But here I go. Sucker.

FLASHBACK: Libs of TikTok Doxing Uncovers Secret Hacker-Government Mercenary Alliance Behind Regime’s War on MAGA Americans

April 20, 2022

American dissidents of all stripes are ablaze with anger after the Washington Post’s most repugnant reporter, Taylor Lorenz, published yet another piece trying to ruin someone more popular than her.

Taylor Lorenz, a Washington Post columnist, wrote a Tuesday article titled, “Meet the woman behind Libs of TikTok, secretly fueling the right’s outrage machine,” revealing the identity of the user who had intended to remain anonymous. The piece linked the user’s real estate page listing her full name and home address, which the outlet later removed.

The account, which nearly has 700,000 followers, posts TikTok videos of liberals in order to spark a reaction among conservative audiences.

Lorenz reportedly contacted Libs of TikTok early Tuesday telling the account they are “being implicated as a hate campaign against LGBTQ people,” the account said. [Daily Caller]...

Stéphane Dujarric said on Friday the UN was “very disturbed” by the barring of prominent tech reporters at news organizations including CNN, the Washington Post and the New York Times who have written about Musk and the tech company he owns...

The Left Will Use Foreign Poll Observers to Fight an Obama Defeat
October 23, 2012 By Joseph Klein Comments (109)
The presidential election has the Left in panic mode. In addition to preparing brigades of lawyers to challenge every alleged irregularity and try to reverse the voters’ verdict in court if need be, the Obama administration and its leftwing boosters are looking to an international cavalry of “election observers” to save them.

The Hill has reported that “United Nations-affiliated election monitors from Europe and central Asia will be at polling places around the U.S.” on Election Day. There will be at least forty-four foreign observers sent by The Organization for Security and Cooperation in Europe (OSCE), which is a regional inter-governmental organization that engages in democratization and human rights projects in partnership with the United Nations. Their job will be to “assess these elections for compliance with international obligations and standards for democratic elections” according to the OSCE’s Office for Democratic Institutions and Human Rights.

The OSCE, headquartered in Vienna, is comprised of 56 participating member states encompassing not only Europe (the one continent included in its title), but also the continents of North America and Asia.

Texas AG says Organization for Security and Co-operation in Europe has no jurisdiction over Texas elections

AUSTIN - Texas Attorney General Greg Abbott today advised the Organization for Security and Co-operation in Europe -- a United Nations partner -- that groups and individuals from outside the United States do not have jurisdiction to interfere with Texas elections. The Attorney General's letter comes after the international group -- comprised of 56 members including EU nations and other countries such as Albania, Azerbaijan, Cyprus, Estonia, Kazakhstan, Latvia, the Russian Federation, Slovenia and Turkey -- announced they would be sending election observers to sites throughout the United States, including Texas, on Election Day.

Europe Has 'Grave Concern' Over Texas' Election Threat

AUSTIN (CN) - The Organization for Security and Co-operation in Europe on Wednesday expressed "grave concern" over the Texas attorney general's threat to arrest and criminally prosecute OSCE election observers if they come within 100 feet of polling places on Election Day.

The OSCE said Texas's threat "is at odds with the established good co-operation between OSCE/ODIHR [Office for Democratic Institutions and Human Rights] observers and state authorities across the United States, including Texas."

International vote monitors warn Texas: Don't mess with us

VIENNA/AUSTIN, Texas (Reuters) - International election monitors took a dim view on Wednesday of Texas' threat to prosecute them if they observe voting in the state a bit too closely on November 6.

The exchange pitted the Vienna-based human rights watchdog Organization for Security and Cooperation in Europe against Texas Attorney General Greg Abbott, who warned the OSCE not to interfere with polling in state elections.

"The threat of criminal sanctions against OSCE/ODIHR observers is unacceptable," Janez Lenarcic, director of the OSCE's Office for Democratic Institutions and Human Rights (ODIHR) monitoring arm, said in a statement.

"The United States, like all countries in the OSCE, has an obligation to invite ODIHR observers to observe its elections."

Abbott told Reuters on Wednesday that he is considering legal action against the group if it doesn't concede that it will follow the state's laws.

An international watchdog group called the Organization for Security and Cooperation in Europe is sending monitors to observe the upcoming U.S. presidential election. They should consider spending some time at all those Democrat campaign offices that keep getting caught in vote-fraud video stings.

According to Reuters, OSCE has observed five previous U.S. elections “without incident,” but now they’re up in arms because the state of Texas told them in no uncertain terms that their monitors are subject to state law, and will be arrested and prosecuted if they interfere with the election.
