It's so good to see rain still coming down this morning. I think it's rained all night. I woke up a few times last night, and it was still coming down. It's supposed to stop around 10:00 this morning.

It's going to be a lazy day for us, today. Because DDIL is sick, we're not having home fellowship. We usually don't plan anything on Sundays, except with our fellowship group. I'll probably just sit here on my pc all day reading, and Cary loves his soccer on tv. I'm gonna cook, tonight, instead of ordering our usual Sunday night pizzas. We've eaten out so much lately that we need to get back to home cooking.

Nothing really planned for this coming week other than more canning. That can always change, though.

Ooops. I forgot this week is grocery shopping week, too. Probably Wednesday or Thursday.

Thanks Judy!! So glad I have folks here who have my back - or maybe it's 'pick up my slack' as the case may be

I'd started to type a post but then the youngest grandson decided we needed to make the 'Graveyard' brownie mix we'd found at the Evil Empire the other day..... brownie mix/coffin cookie cutter, candy bones, red icing - so I was distracted for a bit. I've got the brownie portion of it done, so I'll take it to daughters and they can do the cut and out and decorating bit there.

Youngest grandson had called me yesterday, wanting to come to the farm - our high school football team made the playoffs, and middle grandson and daughter were going. Younger grandson did not want to go to the game - it was crazy crowded/standing room only - so I didn't blame him lol! I can handle the crowd at a normal football game, but the playoffs bring out a LOT more people - small towns; what can you say  Sadly, we lost the game 34-38, so I think we are done with football for the season. I feel bad for the kids, but I remember a couple of playoff games when daughter was in high school and we had to play several games - I like to froze my butt off - snow, sleet, freezing rain.... I've got at least two more years of JFL before I have to worry about freezing my fanny off due to a longer season/possible playoff games.

I've been having some stress at work lately - which probably had an impact on my elevated blood pressure last week. Long story that I'd rather not go into on the main board, but my boss has been discussing it with my co-workers, so that is an issue that has to be discussed as well.

Well, I need to find some 'town' clothes and see if I can drag a little boy of of the bathtub - he's such a water baby that he could stay in there for hours if the water would stay warm enough

Church today was Pastor's Appreciation Dinner, good sermon and way too much food. I was good I only took about a half of a tablespoon of several things to just get a taste. The only thing I ate more of was a grape salad that is to die for. I was full but not stuffed, its a beginning.

I've not gotten much done this past week, I still have commodities to put away, but then I have to find a place to put them. I don't really know why I've been so lax, I've not really felt under the weather. I did struggle with my knee today and my balance, but I did okay. Knee felt a little like it would give out on me and I did not wear a brace.

I wore one of the plaid flannel shirts I got from omar. They are huge but at least they are not right. The nylon tank tops I got for $3 work wonderfully under the flannel shirts.

I'm still trying to wind up the laundry.

This week’s focus will be “more of the same” - setting and working budget for first half of the month and meal planning.

I have some bananas ripening on the counter and want to make some banana bread this week (any good easy recipes you‘d care to share?)

I REALLY need to go through my closet and do a big purge of clothes. I have so much I don’t wear. It’s time to start at it. The entire thing seems overwhelming, but I know it’s time to start.

I think I’m going to go do early voting this week and pay my personal property taxes while I’m at it (same building).

I've been in the kitchen this morning, after my second cup of coffee, cooking out more meat to can. Then, I washed and cleaned up the kitchen. I had to wash all the jars, too. I'll do the canning part tomorrow morning. It helps me if I divide it up into two days.

I went through Cary's closet and purged a lot of his older shirts that were too small for him. They were still too good to throw away, and I don't have anywhere I can donate, since I don't do Salvation Army anymore. So, I washed them all, and I'm taking them for sleeping shirts, LOL. They are too big, but what the heck. I like things to fit too big rather than too small. I took all of his pullover type shirts to wear for my work/everyday tops. Works for me, and he smiles and winks. That's why he needed more winter shirts that we've been buying, lately. Gaining all of his weight back, he had to go to larger sizes.

I haven't decided which day we'll go grocery shopping, yet. I've got my list made out, only replacing what I've used, plus fresh produce. I don't plan to buy a single thing for added storage this time. I'm leaning towards doing that for a while. I have peace about doing it this way for now, at least. If I get that "nudge" later on to start stocking up and adding to my storage again, I'll do that, then.

I'm with you on the "I'm at peace with what I have" feeling.

DH is starting to wake up to shortages. In Dec 2021 I bought two replacements grates for our wood stove. He put one in the camper stove and put something on the bottom of the broken one so he could still use it. Problem with that is its hard to get the ashes out. And he can't find the other new one. So this morning he asked me to order two more while they were still available. And they have not gone up in price, they were much more expensive in 2021. But the just don't make things like they use to. We used one grate for at least 4 years before it broke.

I've been spending too much time at my computer, I'm an information junky. Thing is when I'm sitting here I feel fine and nothing hurts. After I cooked our mid day meal I washed the dishes and my back started killing me. And I need to get a load of clothes out of the dryer and put the load from the washer in there. I really had to push through the back pain to get that done. But I got that done, resting a little to get another load in the washer.

I got to thinking that if and when the power goes out I can still use the washing machine, as long as the propane holds out to run the generator. And I can hang the clothes out to dry if I'm desperate. I have been stocking up on liquid fabric softener to use if I can't use the dryer.

so dishes clean and working on the laundry.

ETA: I just sorted all the dirty laundry and I have more than I thought, apparently its been awhile since I washed clothes. I do have multiples of everything so its deceving when I still have a pile of clothes that are clean. Bad Judy, some of the delicates I'll hang up though. I never put intimates in the dryer.

Also, I forgot to comment about purging closets. I've done some of that in the past but I am definitely glad that I didn't give away all of my fat clothes, some though I was sick of looking and and gave them away. so even though a large portion of my clothes are too small, the only thing I bought for the season were the three plaid flannel shirts that I bought from omar.

We've gotten a good crop of pears this year; I think I'm finally going to break down and attempt some pear brandy.

I would love some pear preserves. Our pear tree died during a drought we had several years ago, and my mom usually makes some every year. She didn't this year, so I'm out of luck getting any. Pear preserves with butter and hot biscuits...Yum.

Sounds great!

I rescued these pears from Mizz Walrus turning them into pear butter or pear sauce or whatever it was she was thinking about. *whew* just in the nick of time! LOL

We had bumper pear crop. I am up to my ears in preserves, pear halves, and pear relish. I have several friends who I swap produce with. Whatever I have too much of I swap with whoever wants what I have. Works out well for us. We went to N. Georgia this past weekend to leaf peep and to get apples. I will be canning from now til Thanksgiving for sure! Anyone can greens? We already have more collards, mustard and turnips than we can eat. Sharing them with anyone that would like a "mess"! Thinking of canning them. May we all be peaceful and blessed this week.

good for you Judy! Pastor appreciation day and Home Coming are DANGEROUS DAYS for the waste line. traditionally the Sunday before Thanksgiving is "Old Fashioned Day" at church. almost everybody dresses in old time "sunday-go-ta-meetin" garb. new overalls, blue bow tie, white long sleeve shirt and news boy hat is typical for me. most of the ladies are in long skirts and aprons. some wear bonnets. there's always a huge thanksgiving feast and great fellowship. typically we will cancel Sunday evening service.

Raggedyann had surgery this morning to remove a mass in the L maxillary sinus. it went well and she's upstairs sleeping comfortably. thanks to all who knew and held her up in prayer.

there are still a few candy roasters to process and freeze. since most of the outside late fall work has been done and I have to stick pretty close to the house the next day or so I may start in on one of those. planning to make a big pot of yellow eyes and ham and a cake of corn bread for diner Wednesday.

enjoy your week friends

I took out a package of 2 cornish hens out of the freezer that had been in there way too long. I figured I could make dog food if it was freezer burned. They looked and smelled good when they thawed. So we are having them with rice. I am trying to use some of the older stuff in the freezers and some of the stuff we dont eat as often.

We took our diesel barrel in to fill with off road diesel for the tractor and generator. That gives us 2 full barrels going into winter. We use out of 5 gallon cans that we refill regularly too. But that is a relief getting that last 53 gallons while we can.

I canned some more coleslaw and some persimmon butter. Persimmon butter is really good. I used the wild ones from our farm.

Cary's first cousin cans all of her greens. They look so pretty in the jars. We're eating our greens regularly, and I'm giving some away. We are being inundated with them and turnips. I was thinking of canning some of mine the next time I canned a batch of ground beef. According to my canning book, the greens are canned for 70 minutes, and the ground beef at 75 minutes. I don't think another 5 minutes on the greens will hurt. I've got my canner going now with ground beef. I didn't have room to include jars of greens this time.

Another successful canning day! All the jars have sealed, and they are all on the countertop to cool. I still have a lot of ground beef to go. I keep checking the older jars I've canned to make sure the seals are still intact. I haven't lost any, yet, and I pray it stays that way. I've only had one jar, so far, that didn't seal, and I used it that night.

Canning all this meat and greens is another reason for me not adding anymore to my food storage. I have to leave room for all this meat, greens, and anything else I'd like to can this winter. I'm thinking I'd like to try to can some potatoes, since the bags that I buy at the grocery store go bad so quickly. I've got lots of flats of diced potatoes from the grocery store, but why buy those when I can can them myself to keep them from going bad? I also plan to bring out my dehydrator this winter to try it out, too. I will need room for all of that, too. Dehydrating fruit of all kinds is my goal.

Off to do grocery shopping, tomorrow. I don't need a single thing for Thanksgiving dinner, except to make the pumpkin and pecan pies. I hope I don't wind up hurting feelings when I let everyone know that I'm not doing all the cooking this year.

SB, I'm interested in canning potatoes also. No clue what to do.

And I also want to make yogurt and not clue where to start. I have shelf stable whole milk to use.

As much yogurt as me and Cary eat, I need to learn how to make it, too. We go through 4 cases in 2 weeks, strawberry, strawberry/banana, peach, and blueberry.

I wouldn't know how to can potatoes if it wasn't for the instructions in my canning book.

I prefer to get plain whole milk yogurt in large containers, not the small individual sizes which are not whole milk.

I looked at a greek yogurt starter on Amazon and put it in my cart. I have a none electric yogurt maker out in my bus that I bought several years back.

I haven't been in the bus in almost a year.

I canned lots of potatoes this past summer. First time for me. Boy do we love them! I can just dump into a bowl and make potato salad in just a minute! I didn't think they were hard to can.

Well, I placed a "stock up" order from Azure Standard. Not one of those crazy-big orders that you see you-tubers post about, but some more of the basics to be put back. Included a box of frozen strawberries, and will be canning most of them. Included 25 lb of cane sugar - Azure cart says its out of stock, but website says they still have 900+ available. Plenty of 5lb bags still available - not sure if I should just adjust my order... Same with Blackstrap Molasses, but was able to sub it out with another brand that should be deliverable.

Very little garden this year - DH not fully on board with tilling up the front yard... but I was able to save basil and thyme from my herb garden - will have to pay more attention to it next year.

I plan on buying a large amount of potatoes to can up - question: are they any good for using to make mashed potatoes? Would assume yes, unless the canning breaks them down too much.

Lost hubby's cat last night. She was old and sick. As sad as it is, better now than shtf. We have both agreed no more pets.

We finally got rain. I was able to get one IBC tote filled. We are supposed to get rain this weekend, so maybe fill another.

Still cleaning out the garden. We are out of the burn ban, so hubby has been burning some of the brush pile that gets built up at this time of year. Thinking of shredding a bunch of it so I can feed it back to my garden.

Finances are so tight right now, we haven't added to the stockpile.

No, they shouldn't be hard for me to do. The instructions are very plain and simple in my canning book. I've just been so busy with canning all this ground beef out of my freezer, before it gets too old, that I haven't had time to can anything else, but will start adding greens to my canner along with the ground beef from now on. Things should slow down during winter, so I plan to do a lot more canning and dehydrating. To me the home canned versions are lots better and healthier than store bought, anyway. I know what I'm eating and how it was grown when I can my own.

Briches if you still need it (you may have made your bread already) this is my favorite recipe for banana bread.

2 medium bananas
1 c sugar
1/2 c softened butter
1/4 c milk
2 eggs
1 tsp vanilla

Combine with mixer, beat 1 min at medium speed. Separately, combine

2 c flour
1 tsp baking soda
1/2 tsp salt
1/2 c chopped nuts (optional)

Stir into wet ingredients until combined. Pour into greased loaf pan. Bake at 350 for 50-60 min.

The recipe says it makes 1 loaf - I usually double this and get 3 loaves. But it depends on how full you make the pans i guess.

Enjoy!

Can you use reconstituted dehydrated bananas for making banana bread? Bananas are the one thing I plan to dehydrate a lot of this winter, along with oranges, apples, and strawberries. I love banana bread sprinkled with powdered sugar all over the fresh baked loaf. Sometimes, I mix the powdered sugar with a little milk and vanilla to make a glaze. YUM!

SouthernBreeze

Has No Life - Lives on TB
SouthernBreeze I've never tried it, but I would think so? At any rate I don't see why not... You'd be aiming for roughly a cup of reconstituted banana for this particular bread recipe.

Mom has always frozen 2 mashed up bananas together and put them up in her freezer for making banana bread. I don't want to use my freezers to do that, so was wanting to dehydrate mine.

Nice sunny day, temps are going back up a little and no rain in sight. Some was predicted but it went away.

I'm down to two tiny loads of clothes. Still have some of the clean dry clothes to get put away.

Chicken salad sandwiches tonight at church. One of my favorite kinds of sandwiches. Chick fil lay use to have a nice chicken salad sandwich, but they discontinued it. There is nothing else on their menu that I like so I never to there anymore. And I don't care for their french fries either. We are getting an Arbies in the college town near me, I think they still have a chicken salad sandwich so I'll try it out. DH doesn't like Arbies so he won't want to go there, but we are not chained together so I can go by myself. Poor thing he is so picky.

I have completely lost my mind, last night I saw a large mouse run across the door way to my office, at first I thought how cute and then I screamed, but not particularly loud. I know my mind is gone. I miss having a cat. Dh has rebated the traps.

Back in the late mid 70's I was living in Foughberg Mariny (badly mispelled) which is behind the quarter. My cat had killed a mouse (small thing) in the kitchen and I ran out on the street and begged a rank stranger to please get it out of my house. It was a different world back then. Although there was danger but has no comparison to what it is now.

No recipes to share but my wife and I decided to purchase two e-bikes since we can easily charge them from our solar system. We chose the wide tire unit that SouthernPrepper1 was evaluating four months back (Velowave eval)... They are serious fun and provide local transportation regardless of the gasoline/diesel situation. Even here on our dirt country roads it's a pleasure to get some wind on your face at about 25 mph. :rdog:

On another note, I'm thrilled to report that last months breeding of our Angus heifer was apparently successful since she didn't serenade us on the three week cycle date. Looking forward to mid July 2023 for her delivery date. Friday our Angus Galloway X bull ("Shorty") will be processed to reduce hay consumption for the Winter. Then comes the Thanksgiving turkey who is predicted to weigh in at about 45 pounds for that huge family event! Once all that is accomplished, it's nothing left to do (ha!) but relocate snow.

Today must have been "Prepper's Day" at our local Walmart! I needed a few cans of red beans to replace what I had used. I was in the canned veggie aisle, and there was a man stacking flats of different veggies into his shopping cart. He was looking for all the non-pop top cans. He ended up with 8 flats. When we got to the checkout counter, he was ahead of us checking out. He had those 8 flats, 2, 6 can packages of canned chicken breasts, 4 of the largest size jars of instant coffee, and 4 gallons of milk. I know he was a "prepper", because he told Cary that instant coffee and sugar will keep forever, and he would only buy the non-pop top cans of veggies. Then.......The woman that pulled up behind us had 4 of the largest bags of frozen chicken legs, flats of canned veggies, and a lot more items, but I couldn't see what all she had without being rude. She whispered to me and said that it was best to buy everything possible right now, cause soon, there might not be anything to buy. She said that she was stocking up. So, you had 3 "preppers" all in a row checking out at the same time, LOL! We didn't comment to either one. Just kept our mouths shut. Just nodded in agreement and smiled. These days, we're really paranoid about talking to anyone about our food storage, except here, and our survival group.

The only shortages I saw were in the frozen pie section. I think they had about 6 pies left (mostly cream pies, no pecan or pumpkin). No frozen potatoes of any kind, but plenty in the bags in the produce section.

We also stopped in at TSC to get Cary another pair of work gloves. He has plenty in stock, but he just had to throw away the pair he's been using, so he had to replace those. Sure don't want to run out of work gloves with all this firewood work.

I just finished putting everything away. Now, I'm tired.

SB I wish I was as organized as you are. I just added the cotton jersey gloves that DH prefers to my amazon shopping list. The price is normal for 12 pairs, so at least they have not gone out of sight in cost.

My area of the living room is a mess. I put up a card table over in the corner because I wanted to organize my vitamins. Of course I got over whelmed. I have a make do table on one side of my chair and a tv table on the other side. I have small fans on each. I decided I needed a better mouse trap so to speak and order something to go on each side.

This is the one on the right side

and this one on the left side

The bottom shelf on the right side one is for my trash can and my lace up shoes that I wear around the house. The middle half shelf will probably hold a few books that I keep trying to get in the mood to read. The top shelf is for a small fan and stuff one puts on their bedside table.

The card on the left side, one of the small fans, a lamp and a few things I may need in the evening. The middle for more books that I have on the floor in the living room and the bottom shelf for my needlework that I keep trying to figure out how to do.

then maybe I can get those supplements put in clear shoe boxes and stored on the shelves in the bedroom the DH built for things like that. I try to keep a years supply of what I take and that adds up to a big stash.

Ordered 2 cases of canned pinto beans from Walmart, they just came.
I need laundry detergent so I'll do a small order for Friday.
Been working on the office, trying to get the pantry put in there as we are hosting Christmas this year. Out of sight and all.
Not much else to post about.
Prayers for everyone especially the next couple of weeks.
