I know people who use Voltaren but it scares me. I think short term it might be ok. I know at one time it was banned in Europe.
Thanks for info on knee braces.

My Rheumatologist recommended Voltaren to me on my last visit. Lupus affects my finger joints, and he told me to use it just like I would hand cream. I bought some, but once I read about it, I'm scared to use it, too. You have to be careful how much you use at one time and how often you use it. Long term, it can cause kidney disease. IIRC, it can affect your liver, too. I've used it once or twice on my knee, but it had no effect on the pain at all.

How do you cure the hams?

We use to raise domestic pigs and feeding them was out of sight and that was before feed got so expensive. DH has some wild pigs that he is feeding out, but he says they don't eat a lot of corn like our domestic ones did. He want to try curing a ham.

Dh learned to process the wild pigs about three years ago and now he can process the deer he kills. Build himself a processing shed that looks like a tall out house. Has an ac and a freezer in there and its tall enough to hang what ever.
That is awesome that he processes game. DH barter electrical work with local game processor that processes lots if wild pigs, or county is over run. Anyway he grounds hundreds if pounds and seasons as Italian. For electrical work we get ground pig.

My dental appt. went well. I can now wear my bottom plate! Yay! I finally have some molars on bottom to chew with. It took him a while to get them to fit right. He's going to be consulting with my Rheumatologist, before taking out any more teeth. Once these other 3 teeth are out, he can refit my upper partial so they will fit, too. I don't plan to have them taken out, until early part of next year, unless it's an emergency. Dentist is ok with that. Cary has so many CT scans and doctor's appointments taking up the rest of this year, himself, for me to add having more teeth taken out, and laid up for almost 3 weeks each time (Unless Rheumatologist can come up with a fix). Plus, Thanksgiving and Christmas coming.

We are still planning to go to big town shopping, tomorrow. Sam's, Aldi, and Scruggs (huge farm and ranch store).

Where's WanderLore? She hasn't posted since 9/7.

I'm hoping the 23/24th will turn out to be a nothing burger, but I got all of my errands done. Even dropped off the library books I had finished on the way to dh's Dr. appt. yesterday. I don't plan on leaving the yard until Monday. It's right at 100 degrees again, and there's no way I could walk home in that heat of I needed to.

I finally made myself go thru the box of family photos that I brought home from Dad's. I kept putting it off because I knew a lot of them were missing and I knew it was going to make me furious. Well someone had moved them to a different box than the one they'd been in for 50 years, and when I pulled them all out, I found a bundle of junk mail in the bottom. (Evidently put inside to take up space and make weight) The box was less than 1/4th full. Dad dated a seriously nasty woman for about 18 mos and I'm sure that she just threw all the photos of Mom and me away. She and her grandkids stole him blind, and they probably took anything they thought they could sell. All of the photos of Dad and his Army buddies in 1950's Paris are gone as well.
At least it will be be less for my kids to go thru and probably throw out when the time comes...

Not getting too much done the last couple of days, just feeling blah. It may be that the heat has come back. Although I'm still vacuum sealing lids. Had a bunch of things in jar but had not sealed them. I've three case to go to the she shed.

I did not realize that about the voltaren. Doctors just prescribe stuff with not telling about the negative side of them. I've been taking the diclofanic pills for a couple of months and they do help. I do know that taking any NSAIDS long term are harmful. Although its difficult to think about those things when you are in pain.

We just got back from big town. Made a big haul at Aldi's. All authentic German foods imported from Germany. Dark Chocolate candy bars, several jars of German sauerkraut, several jars of German pickles, bags of spaetzle of two different flavors, dark pumpernickel and rye breads I wanted to make sure I loaded up in case they don't carry this stuff all the time. I wanted a few jars of pickled red cabbage, too, but they were already out. It was so hot, and I forgot to put our cooler in the car, or I would have bought food that needed to be kept cold or frozen. At Sam's, very few food items for storage. Scrugg's (farm and ranch) was a big haul, too. Cary got 2 pullover shirts (one is fleece lined) and one pair of fleece lined work pants, some reloading items, and a nice wind chime for our lower garden. Hopefully, it will help keep the critters away. I bought 3 pair of jeans for myself.

We ate at Cracker Barrel before coming home. I stuck to my diet, too. I treated myself to a small pecan roll to eat, later, LOL! I'll probably regret that tomorrow when I weigh myself.

Supposed to hit 100 with a heat index of 105, today! The lettuce never came up, mustard did, but it isn't growing much. Turnips are doing ok for now. I picked a big dishpan full of them this morning. Got them all washed good and chopped for my supper, tonight. I'm gonna have them with German meatballs and butter beans. The gravy, mashed potatoes, and cornbread will be for Cary only. I'm sticking with my diet. I've already lost 5 pounds as of this morning.
It was 102 yesterday. Not sure what today was, here in suburban Memphis.

I put lettuce, cabbage and broccoli transplants out about 3 weeks ago - the day before Labor Day.

Would you believe they are all thriving - even with this weeks unexpected summer heat wave!

They were placed in really great soil - an earthworm’s idea of paradise. All organic, of course.

But the key to helping them survive this summer heat wave is watering them TWICE a day

Of course, I always water new transplants twice a day during their first week in the ground.

That is normal for me.

But when I saw these excessive hot days coming, I decided to keep up the double watering until the excessive heat goes away.

And it is paying off. Every plant in my garden is thriving.

perhaps double watering - if your schedule and budget allows it - might help your garden, SB.

(I added the issue of budget because some city dwellers and folks living in the west are charged alot of money for their water usage. I don’t think your area is, though. And I know my area is not.)

My right knee isn't any better in spite of wearing a knee brace. I'll probably need a steroid injection in it on the 29th when I see my Rheumatologist. Not looking forward to that. To me, those injections a so very painful.
I have knees bad enough that most orthos I have seen want to replace them ASAP.

But I am a runner, and if you ever get your knees replaced, you can no longer run. The artificial joints they make today are not built to handle high impact sports.

So I found a great orthopedic doc who is wiling to help me fight bad knees without surgery, for now.

You would be amazed at what exercise can do to RELIEVE knee pain. A physical therapist can help you learn how to do this.

In addition, I get rooster shots once every six months (yes, they actually are called rooster shots). This helps lubricate the joints.

The cortisone shots are pain killing shots, and are usually taken up to 4 times a year. But they do not help your knee long term. In fact, they hurt the knee long term, because they are a steroid, and all steroids tend to thin the bone density in the hoint.

Then I run in a pretty heavy unloader brace.

Water exercise is also really good for knees.

Even when I run, I do not use painkilling gels or ointments, with the possible exception of after running a half or full marathon.

We're watering every day, instead of every other day, sometimes twice a day. The squash and tomatoes are ready to start dying, anyway. We've had an abundance of each. Except for the mustard, everything else is holding its own.

Our community water is pretty cheap at $23/month. We're allowed a certain amount, and if you use more than that, they start charging extra. We haven't gone over, but we don't use community water on any of our gardens. We have rain barrels and a water tank, plus wash tubs and buckets for roof runoff.

Volteran is a nsaid, just like Aleve or ibuprofen or celebrex.

All the normal precautions with orher nsaids apply to volteran too.

Agree. All meds have risks. I have taken meloxicam short term which I consider high risk. Otherwise I take aspirin and occasionally ibuprophen.
I am going to call to get cortisone injections. Haven't had any in 18 mos. New x-rays too. Knees were not bone on bone
In last x-rays. Having tests run next Dr visit to see if this is osteoarthritis or RA. I tested positive for RA long long ago but it was mild and I quit testing positive.

I admire your pain tolerance!! I thought mine was high, but I think you have me bested by a LONG shot!!!

Running is not even anything I consider anymore. But, I think we have different knee issues. Mine are literally flopping the bones around inside the skin, with the ligaments, cartilage, and tendons failing, or completely disconnected. Yours is totally racked out and needs a new joint. Weird huh????

I picked a bushel of peas Wednesday night. We got them all shelled last night. Today I will can them up in quarts. I have the rest of the garden to pick today too.

I picked a gallon of muscidines to make jelly. I just bagged them and threw them in the freezer till I get more time. I am hoping to make pear preserves too.

We finished my contract job yesterday. On the way home we stopped in our little town to do some shopping. Our Harps had apples in the discount bin for $1.00 a bag. I bought 4 bags. I am going to make some applesauce. I also got some cane sugar since I will be using some up.

My kitchen is currently a wreck. I have canning to put away and I am running out of room. I also have a little store bought stuff to put away. Then there is regular house work to get caught up because haying and other work has kept me busy or worn out. I keep telling myself that things will slow down this winter. But as we get older, we slow down too. :shr:

Thanks to philkar we shelled a bunch of peas and did a bunch of canning last weekend and early this week. One of my granddaughters (10) is very interested in learning to cook and can , so she helped a lot. The stores haven’t had any good sales lately, so we haven’t been buying much.

Homeschooling two grands and keeping up with my crochet orders have been keeping me super busy, but we’ve taken a few days off and are now in Mississippi for a family reunion. None of the family live here; we just meet in the middle between Texas and Georgia. We did bring two of the grands with us, so it’s not totally a vacation, lol.

Barry Natchitoches - Thanks for reminding me about the 'rooster shots' (ie: Euflexxa) - talked my ortho into giving me those again the other day when he asked if I was ready to bite the bullet on a knee replacement (bone on bone; no meniscus, it shredded during a fall a few years back) It's a series of 3 shots, but I'd just finished a 3 day run of 12 hour night shifts when I hit his office and totally forgot to ask when I needed to show up for #'s 2 & 3. Probably wouldn't have remembered it if they'd told me by that time anyway. He checked the chart and the last time I got them was in 2020; not a bad deal if they helped that long.

Since we don't live close to the VA, DH gets an all in one shot. He said it hurts like heck when he's getting the shot but he doesn't have to keep going back.

I just CAN'T BELIEVE this weather!!!

Two days of scorching heart a couple of days ago, and looking at the forecast for next week, it is going to be in the mid and low FORTIES at night!!! That will be the end of my tomatoes and peppers if I don't get a greenhouse type thingy up THIS WEEK!!!!

WHERE has time gone!!!

We really are hitting into Fall immediately and I'm thinking winter is going to be as BIZARRE as this summer's weather has been!!!

I have been up most of the night, and it has been COLD in here! My doggo is even shivering!!! GOODNESS.....it has been 62 inside from the time I couldn't sleep until now!!!!

WHAT are we gonna be like when WINTER hits!!?? It's 52 degrees outside!!!!

I am REALLY gonna miss my garden!! It has not been a good one, or even what I wanted this year, but fiddling with it was sure FUN!!!!

And that is the first time I have had lots of fun in it for years!! I'm sure because I am FINALLY retired and was able to just ENJOY IT!!

Well, since I was up all night, I think I will plop down and take a nap for a bit.......

Nomifyle, I'm blessed that my ortho office is just across the parking lot from the hospital where I work - and since I get off work at 0730, I can usually get an 0815 appointment, which gives me time to clean up a bit and pull on a pair of stretchy capris that I can pull up over my knee. Kudos to your Hubby - I'm not sure I'm tough enough to tolerate all three shots at once - I was using my left foot for both accelerator and brake on the way home so that I could keep the right leg extended.

Heading to the pool to exercise this morning; then will go up to the local orchard - I want to pick up Golden Delicious and Gala apples - they do have seconds available, and I just happen to have a grandson that thinks turning the crank on the apple peeler/corer is great fun, so we will make some applesauce to can. I quarter the peeled and cored apples, dump 'em in a pot with some cider and cook them down, mashing them with a potato masher to leave the sauce chunky. I water bath can the sauce in pint jars at 20 minutes. They also have Italian plums - I probably won't buy enough to can them, but will eat them fresh.

Looks like I'm going to have to make a run to the Amish bulk food store as well - I thought I had two half gallon bags of the red-hots candies that I use to make cinnamon applesauce but I just checked all of the pantries and can't find them - guess that means I'll need to make a run to the Amish store. Makes me crazy - I know I just saw a half gallon bag of them somewhere. Knowing me, I probably put it somewhere I thought it would be handy... :xpnd:

I think about where has the time gone, it seemed slow going at the time but now its almost October. I think many have been holding their breathe until the midterms. And all the crap about what's going to happen in two weeks, three weeks, whatever.

I've got three cases of jared sealed food to go to the she shed. Some I dehydrated and some came in a box or package. I've still got more to do. I just took 8 more pounds of rice out of the freezer to thaw out before I get it in jars. We get this rice in commodities. I don't give it away just in case. We don't eat rice, DH doesn't like it and I quit eating it years ago.

I have read that if you cook rice or pasta and put it in the refrigerator over night it lowers the glycemic number on it.

It's been a busy morning here. Cary worked on our irrigation pipes for the lower garden. Works great now for the whole garden, instead of only doing one row at a time. He tilled the rows after putting down fertilizer. Then, he picked the turnip greens for me. Got another dishpan of those. He hung his windchime down there, too.

While he was doing all of that, I was watering everything, including the azaleas, hostas, and roses. Then, I cooked out more ground beef to can, tomorrow. After canning, tomorrow, I'm done with ground beef. Then, it was on to washing and chopping the turnip greens.

I have chicken breasts and a package of bacon thawing. We loved the bacon wrapped chicken breasts so much that I'm making that again, tonight, along with my fresh greens, purple hull peas, boiled potatoes with butter sauce and parsley, and cornbread. We stopped at Cary's favorite donut shop while in town, yesterday, and bought a dozen fresh Bavarian cream filled donuts. That will be his dessert.

It's been a wonderful day - the kind you can look back on with a smile. The neighbor lady picked me up to go to the pool at 10; we were in for an hour, then we headed out to spread a teeny bit of financial joy here and there. First we headed to another small town, to go to the diner for lunch - plenty of leftovers from my lunch to serve Hubby a good supper tonight. Then it was off to the locally owned orchard - a bushel of #2 Golden Delicious to turn into applesauce and canned apple slices, box of apple cider donuts for me and one for the grandkids, 1/2 gallon of cider ditto, and I also picked up pears and plums to eat fresh. The neighbor picked up some things for herself there as well. Then, on impulse, we stopped at a nearby grocery store as I hadn't been able to find red-hot candies to put in my applesauce anywhere - they had 4 bags, so I picked up two of them. Then it was off to the neighbor who has a farm market - mums, pumpkins, and Indian corn followed me home. The neighbor across the road was getting ready to cut corn - was just waiting on the grain truck to show up; I asked if I could buy some stalks to decorate with - he said sure, but wouldn't take a dime for the 8 stalks, and even cut them down for me. Coworker Buddy texted me as I was carrying in my haul and told me that we had gotten bonus checks at work - I hadn't figured we'd get one after all the new building that had been going on, but we ended up with $240 post taxes; that will help with some things I'd like to do around home.

Tonight is the Homecoming football game, but since there is rain forecast to start in around 4, and I don't have a player or cheerleader that belongs to me out on the field - if you don't get there way early; it's standing room only, so I think I'll leave my seat open for those who do (Heaven knows I've spent enough time sitting on those cold, hard metal bleachers!!)

Since tonight is Homecoming, I'll tell an apocalypse story on myself - daughter had asked me to stay at her house in town with the children (who were preschool and kindergarden age) for a few days while she went on a trip. Now mind you, I've lived most of my life on the same farm, at the end of a dead end road, way out in the country.... So, Friday night, the kids were tucked into bed by 7pm and out like a light, and I was plopped on the bed in the guest room reading, when I heard some loud BOOMS!! The whole dang house shook!! I about fell out of bed; then jumped up and ran to the window - could see some lights flashing in the west and heard a siren briefly. I checked on the kids - still sound asleep, then ran downstairs and looked out the door - all was quiet, nothing out of the ordinary happening, so I went back up to bed. About 20 minutes later, the same thing happened - I was starting to freak out a little. I checked on the kids, then wrapped up in a blanket and went out on the porch - and by golly, it wasn't another 20 minutes or so til it happened again - booms, flashes of light, sirens. I was getting pretty freaked out again. I went in and locked the doors and was walking around trying to decide if I needed to take the boys down to the basement or make a run for home, or what I should do. Shortly after that, I heard a lot more booms, car horns honking, people yelling - I was getting TOTALLY FREAKED OUT!! I ran out on the porch and was just about ready to throw the kids in the car and hightail it out of town when some kids ran by talking about how great the football game was and the fireworks and sirens when we got a touchdown were totally cool and....

We won the homecoming game :xpnd:

It had been 20 years since I'd been to a football game; back when daughter was a cheerleader. Things had changed since then....:lkick:

Been kind of busy at work, reworking a 1948 Plymouth for a customer. Brakes, lights, carburetor, fuel pump...then we'll see what it needs. Job security, eh?
Anyhow, making a couple grocery runs this weekend to top back off and get some extra goodies. Mainly chocolate. Don't know how things will be around the holidays, so figured we'd stock up early...
And then one of the solar charge controllers decided to be stupid around 1pm and quit charging. Grrr...well maybe not. It is still under warranty. Yippee! Turnaround is about two weeks...blah. Going to put up some more panels anyhow, so might as well get another controller, put it in place of the dead one, then hook up the replacement to the new array when it gets back. I have other controllers, but they aren't as efficient, so they'll stay relegated to back-up duty. At least the entire system isn't down.
Gasoline is down to 2.89/gal so have been filling the new drum 5 gallons at a time. A bit slower than I'd like but easier on the budget. This may get accelerated if the tropical system moving toward the Gulf of Mexico decides to be ignorant and head this way.
Got the raised beds cleared out, so will swing by the stables Monday and get some more manure to over-winter. Hopefully it is still free...
Our prayers go out to all you folks with health issues. May you get relief from your discomfort and know future good health!

Thanks for mentioning chocolate and the holidays, Tech - I probably need to check the cocoa stock, mmmm homemade fudge!!

I'll have at least one grandkid handy tonight/tomorrow, so I'm going to pull out the sweet corn stalks tomorrow - I've got a full load of fairly well composted manure from the sale barn in the trailer and will spread it where I pull the sweet corn out, then till it in. I'm still getting green beans, but the yellow ones that I left to go to seed are just about ready to harvest - I just need a warm day to make sure they are nice and dry before I bring them in.

I'm also hoping the short person will help me pick up the black walnuts in the side yard - I pay him to do that as he's still closer to the ground than I am, so it's easier for him than it is me

My back was hurting so bad last night, so I dug out the TENS unit, and let Cary plug me in. It worked wonders, and I have no pain this morning. Gonna use it on my knee, tonight.

Temps are going down to 80's with lows in the 50's. Some places may see upper 40's after today. We do have a slight chance of rain overnight and into tomorrow morning. I sure hope we get a lot of rain, not just a small sprinkle. I'm tired of watering everything. Cary watered again this morning........

Then, he went off to DS's house to help him get finished up on the fence he's putting around his property. That's probably going to take all day.

Canner is going with my last batch of ground beef. The rest of my pint jars will be kept for peas if they do anything before frost. If not peas, I'll use them to vacuum seal dry goods. Those boxes of Rice-Roni fit nicely in pint jars.

The Tide pods that I use have gone up a lot in price. I thought I had another canister of pods but I can't find them so I ordered more. The pods now come in a zip loc rather than a canister. Those bags are cheaper than the canisters. I need to look further for that canister I thought I still had.

Doing almost no adding to the pantry except for what we get in commodities. From both types of commodities we got 6 - 12 1/2 oz cans of chicken. We are still getting rice too. The pantry room and the freezers have a lot in them, no room to add much more.

Its still in the 90's today and tomorrow, but going in the 80's starting on Monday. No rain in sight. The leaves on the first tree outside my office window are starting to drop and I can see bare spots on the limbs. The trees in the back ground are turning.

Doing up laundry since our water will be off at the end of the week so the city can fix a huge leak. We have water for drinking and flushing. I've been working on laundry anyway.
The contractors are done re-siding and painting the house. We planned for this and having piers put in. Ugh.
The pantry is in good shape but I want to fill some holes in the freezer.
Continuing to declutter and donate.
The okra is coming on finally and I need to cook green beans. I can't grow tomatoes but I can grow beans and greens!

Like you, Judy, I'm running low on storage space. Not much room for anything else. The last time I went grocery shopping at Walmart, I only bought to replace what I had used, instead of trying to stock more. I did buy a lot for storage at Aldi's, but that's it. I going to go back there, Thursday, when I go to the doctor, and get more if they have any of what I want left.

There is nothing I really want except for eating out and that's pretty much out of the question.

Today was a beautiful day here. I found out great grand daughter isn't able to get the chocolate that I ordered so that's out for Christmas. Daughter took me to watch great grand daughter play volleyball, then we went shoe shopping. Bought one pair of dressy Skechers and a fun pair of Crocs. Home to my chair with pizza for a late lunch. I'm tired but it was a good day. It's been a long time since I've been able to do that.

I put all the doom to the side today and enjoyed a beautiful day with hubby and our dogs. We had a bottle of wine, enjoyed the sunshine and hubby is about to cook us some fresh fish and shrimp.
All apocalyptic events will simply have to wait until another time.
