We had a cat when we first married. It was Christmas season and wife and I just finished decorating the tree. Yeah that cat was a pain in the @$$. It finally brought it crashing down after a day or so.

About a day later the cat was walking across the room waiving it’s tail in the air … like screw you … you lost. Something caught my eye. I looked …like three times. WTF is that I said out loud. The wife comes in the room.

I point at the cats butt. It’s twinkling from about a inch from its rear end. We both get closer to look. LOL he has ate some tinsel. Well after we stopped laughing ourselves to death, we got concerned. What should we do she says. Looking at her I said … pull it out. Yep … you do it … nope … you do it. So I gave a light tug to see if it would exit easy. The little bastard wasn’t playin.

I said he ate it … let him work it out … he did. Walked around like that for a day.

Will gladly extend my prayers for Gracie and for you and wife. Our furkids are important to us! If they are hurting, we hurt along with them. Covering all of you with hugs and prayers.

My family's pug ate a one inch plus? flower magnet that fell off the fridge door and hit the floor...gone in a second. Never followed up. Guess it got pooped out later.

Wonder if that little razor piece would eventually wall off, slough off and pass?

Praying the UTI/kidney issue is resolved too!

Prayers for the right advice for Gracie's situation. And no more issues.

And prayers for safe travels!

I hope Gracie does alright, and that you and Mrs. Raggedy get some good sleep tonight. I sure hope she comes home tomorrow. It's so hard when our fur kids are at the vet's office.

Good you caught it. When I qas in it would be xray to locate, surgery to remove. Had an xray of a cat that swallowed a cross and chain, dog with trwble hook. It happens she should be fine.

just off with upstate - she had a good night and is ready to be set free from the doggie hospital. we'll be leaving in just a few. plan is to recheck her urine and kidney functions in a week. they are not concerned with the razor, but want to stage the kidney disease. hopefully there won't be any staging at all - she'll make a full recovery and regain all of her kidney function. honestlyt i don't think this has been a long term issue - I believe it started with this last heat and went unnoticed for about 6-7 weeks.

that's where we need to focus our thots and prayers - appreciate all of you. gone to get the gurlski

well she's home and resting - still a bit "off" but definitely trending toward normal. she's on a 10 day course of the doggie equivalent to CLAVAMOX 375mg twice a day - that's a pretty good bang for 62.4 lbs of doggie - and is to followup in a week with her primary vet and labs.

looking more like we're going to get her spayed before that third heat. may go after the razor at that time - remains to be seen.

appreciate all the prayers and positive thots sent this way. keep you posted if anything worrisome develops.

ETA: bossman - your $3000 guestimate was a little off . . . total nut for 2 days in the hospital, endoscopy, Abdominal US, 3 sets of plain films, associated fluids, meds and related paraphernalia necessary to attend the princess . . . $3485. actually all things considered I thought that wasn't bad. these are the same people who did spinal surgery on Moses - twice - saw Bear when he had eye trauma and now Gracie. they've done a bang up job EVERY TIME we've need them. far better experience here at UPSTATE VETRINARY SPECIALISTS than at UT.

you can't put ANY cost on the love of a dog - its what we do for them - as much as we can

I am sjrprised tgey did not remove the piece. It mivht be encapsulated by mucusas an irritant I suppoze. Did not realize she aas large breed, means larger gi and butthole to pss it thru.

Gracie is tne name of an ankle biter.

Whag is this about her heat and renal issjes? Not somdthing I rd all hearing before.

she seems to have a low grade acute on chronic UTI - she's had two heats - the first was without incident in that she had a good appetite and ate well. shortly after the start of her second heat - late May - I noticed she was showing a diminished appetite. we called the vet about it and the response was that its wasn't particularly unusual to see that from a female in heat. she has a hooded vulva - which means that she's going to retain a little moisture - if not some urine. add to that the necessary diaper given her heat and you have the perfect environment for bacterial growth and UTI.

after the heat her appetite improved but then diminished again. during that time frame she never had any other sx - frequency, urgency, blood in the urine or soiling in the house.

the US shows some changes in the pelvis of the kidney - there is some thought that she MAY have underdeveloped kidneys; given the fact that she was the runt and at 1 yr weighs 62.4 lbs. never had a rott that tiny at 1 year. the interpretation reads "acute on chronic". her kidney values are skewed and her wbc is elevated. got to get the UTI under control and reassess her kidney function. shes improving but appetite is still a bit diminished.

praying that there isn't any damage to her kidneys and the discussion of "staging kidney disease" I had with the vet internist will be a moot point.

she's not eating or drinking very much today :( but she does seem to be more "normal" in terms of her other behaviors; not lethargic and she's going both ways OK . . . she doesn't seem to be running a temp- no panting or shaking, has a wet nose and her ears and paws are not warm to the touch

As far as the small piece of blade.....I'd think the body would wall it off...it may be gone next time they look for it....hope so.

Also, occult blood tests in stool are easy and cheap to do...test kits sold on Amazon. I've used many times on people and my dogs...just routine usually. Everyone should have these kits, imo.

keeping the prayers going - get the uti cleared up and no more problems!

agreed - vets are really UNconcerned with the piece of razor. Tami said initially that it shouldn't really be a problem. I think she went ahead and referred us to Upstate more to ease MY concerns. you know how plain xray magnifies things . . they measured it and its 1.3cm. she ate a bunch of grass last night and kept it down until about 0600 today. she kept wanting to go out and all she'd do was munch a bunch of grass. litterally had to fight her to keep her from eating it . . . it all came out in a big clump. maybe that was an instinctual action - maybe that pulled it out.

she's on the upswing. appetite and hydration MUCH improved from earlier today and going both ways satisfactorily. also giving her 1GR of sucralfate in 12cc of water via syringe just to ease anything in the esophagus from either the object or the scope.

thanks again to all - KIDS - always a source of perpetual grey hairs for mom and dad huh?

ETA - that suggestion to keep a supply of hemoccult test strips on hand is a good one - also going to get some UTI test strips - THANK YOU very much

When that grass she barfed dries a bit, go looking through it. Are razor blades magnetic? If so, a magnet would save time.

Our hired hand's dog was lounging on the pond bank a couple years ago, while his younger brothers were fishing. He spotted a baited treble hook... at least an inch in diameter and 1 1/2" from top to bottom... swallowed it and 36 inches of wire leader before anyone knew what happened! We monitored him for several days, and he never showed any ill effects at all. About 10 days later,one of the kids found the hook and leader on the lawn... all shiny from stomach acids!

Prayers for Gracie!

Oh... many years ago, our 3 year old Akita bitch was in heat, and jumped 10 feet out of the haymow to escape. I took her for X-rays, and while her front elbow wasn't broken, they discovered she had a grossly enlarged spleen. They removed it that afternoon... biopsy showed hemangiosarcoma. She was the only dog they ever had who survived that..thar... and *only* because they found it while checking on something else. If we hadn't taken her in for the minor injury, she would have been dead within a few months. As it was, she produced several beautiful litters of pups, and died of bloat at 11. Hopefully, this is a similar blessing that it gave you a heads up on the kidney issues in time!

great idea - did that earlier - razor blad was SS so non magnetic - but I did go thru it very carefully - despite the size of it nothing there. some came out the other way too and it could have been in there. when I see Tami next week we'll get another film of her belly. that will tell us for sure
