ALERT There is a bug in iOS 15.5 that causes some threads to endlessly refresh

I only make this suggestion because it's a weekend and you may have time to fiddle with it. You're the only one who can do it, I have the time to waste right now but not the ADMIN access you need to be able to delete posts. And I don't know if you have the ability to do as I suggest, let alone have the time, but if you are the curious sort, this will help you get to the root of the issue.

Go into page 2 of the thread on your desktop, with your ipad next to you. Start deleting one post with a tweet at a time and check your ipad page each time, if it is still freezing up, that post is not the culprit. Put the post back and delete the next tweet post. Go down the page until the one you delete stops freezing up your page. Voila. Once you find the offending tweet, go to that tweet on your desktop and see if it is a tweet with a video script running (which I suspect it is). If that's what it turns out to be, let people know not to post a hotlink to any tweets with videos.

If the software doesn't allow you to delete posts and put them back.... can you save a duplicate of the thread somewhere in a backroom as a backup (????) and fool around on the duplicated thread deleting posts one at a time until you find the issue. Once you figure out the post causing the problem, delete that one post on the original thread on MAIN. (or break up the hotlink on the thread so that it doesn't connect to twitter but leaves the text that poster posted).

Heliobas, I’ve thought about that. I may well do it, just not right now. We never “hard delete” anything, our “deletes” just make them invisible to non-staff. I’d have to delete the entire page worth, then undelete them one at a time from the bottom up. It’ll take awhile to do that.

Reading this and I just had a ptsd flashback working with my MIVA shopping cart. It would work well on a pc but one tiny code error and no apple user could access the site.

That'll work, just in reverse;). If I were doing it, I'd start with post 71 - that one opens up a tweet that has a running video. I figure video has more script, more room for error....

You really have to do it backwards.

OK. I don't how it works on your end. But my guess will be when you get to a tweet that runs a video, that's going to be the issue. and 71 has a video. My problem is that on my desktop I can't see tweets, I can only click on them and open them in a new tab and some of them were slow to open for me so it could be some other script that's running on those too. Usually if I want to see the tweets as I read, I use the ipad, but when I use the ipad, that page locks up... so not much help.

I wonder if it has to do with the LINK FOR the TWEET. Because I'm on the chans frequently I have noticed some twitter links with all these extra characters in the address line (a question mark and a bunch of crap behind that question mark like this....

https://twitter.com/mrddmia/status/1545574819709816833?s=20&t=xYpQ_hH907NXTQuNZ7T6kw

And I'm wondering if the question mark and the crap behind it may be what's causing this loop?

When bringing over a tweet, all you really need to bring over is the address UP TO BUT NOT INCLUDING the question mark and everything that follows it, so I delete everything from the question mark on

https://twitter.com/mrddmia/status/1545574819709816833

I've just wondered if all that extra crap in the tweet address wasn't put there to cause havoc?

You still get the same tweet no matter which address you use, be it the one with the question mark and all the crap following it....

Or just the simple address

I've mentioned this before.
Everything after the question mark is a tracking code.

I’ve been a software troubleshooter for over 40 years. Think about it logically. You need to remove posts until it stops refreshing. Doing that from the top down means that you may not find the culprit until the end. Further, you may have many posts that trigger the refresh. Going from the bottom up until it stops instantly identifies the first offending post.

You a software person?

No. I defer to you on all matters software. And your logic is good too. I was assuming only one offending post in which case you could start from the top of the page or the bottom of the page - it's really six of one or a half dozen of the other on where you tackle the problem from. But if there is more than one offending post, you are totally right that going from the bottom is the way to do it. As long as you don't put the posts back as you go. Then when you find the first offending post, start putting them back and keep checking to see if another one triggers it. Bravo!!!! I hope you have the time to do it. Now I'm really curious as to what you are going to discover.

I'm wondering if this is related somehow?? And yes, there are good and bad ways to implement and use a "new" feature...

Apple says it will issue ‘Lockdown Mode’ option on iPhones to protect users from ‘mercenary spyware’
Company has been major advocate of privacy protections, legislation.

Tech giant Apple this week said it would soon be opening its iOS system to a sophisticated “lockdown” feature, an “extreme” feature that will permit users to protect their phones against major cyberattacks.
The company said in a news release that its next release of iOS in the fall would include an option for “Lockdown Mode,” what the company called “an extreme, optional protection for the very small number of users who face grave, targeted threats to their digital security.”
When activated, Lockdown Mode “hardens device defenses and strictly limits certain functionalities, sharply reducing the attack surface that potentially could be exploited by highly targeted mercenary spyware,” Apple said.
Within the security mode, features such as messaging, web browning, wired connections and FaceTime calls are blocked or severely limited.
The company said it will “continue to strengthen Lockdown Mode and add new protections to it over time.”
As part of its “Apple Security Bounty program,” the company said it will offer users up to $2,000,000 if they can “find Lockdown Mode bypasses” in order to “help improve its protections.”

YOU WERE SO RIGHT!!!!

It is two posts. It's posts 49 and 78 (ironically one of the first posts and the last post with twitter links, it would've taken forever doing it the way I proposed).

Apparently now that it's happening to everyone, the problem has been diagnosed by other folks, doing the work for us. I saw the solution on GLP, a proscribed site so not going to link to it. But it's any twitter thread with a 'sensitive content warning' on it. Both of those posts link to those kinds of tweets. I'd start there, and if that clears it up, maybe you could tell members not to post any tweet that has a warning on it until Apple clears up the issue. or not, your board, your rules, don't want to step on toes. ;)

PS my desktop is acting all funky after opening those two tweets. I'm on an old version of firefox though. Going to have to sign out and close the window now and start over. that's how bad it is....

Going to press the 'report a post' button when done to make sure you get this. Would pm but don't know if you're pm box is full of stuff and if you'd see it as quickly that way.

I ran across this today. It appears to be triggered by Twitter posts. I have no idea why, but it appears to cross browsers. So it’s not a browser or a thread problem. I have no idea as to a workaround or a fix.

Only Apple devices are affected.

This thread freezes and won’t load the page. There are a couple twitter links in the first post, but I can’t even click on them. Shutdown and restart don’t help.

Using an iPad/Safari here.

Yep

It's the 2nd post, first twitter link has the sensitive content warning. that's going to be the culprit every time.

IOS 14.7.1 here and it’s doing it. Wow, my tin foil hat is handy….

tin foil hat not necessary. It's a bug in the software - doesn't discriminate on the content - ANY twitter post that has a sensitive content warning on it (whose script is automatically blocked on IOS devices unless settings are changed by a twitter account holder in their settings) is going to cause the problem on a board like TB. The script they are using is what's causing the problem.

Not a bug…it’s a feature’

iPhone XRr, iOS 15.5

I’ve not seen this bug pop up on my phone.

I do have an iPhone 7 Plus, that’s dead because of the four year old battery. I have everything to repair/replace the battery, and the screen and rest of the phone are perfect.

Apple will let me trade in the phone for $200, towards a new 13 pro max. Hell, I’d even take a 12 pro max. The XR has a cracked screen and a cracked rear glass screen issue. I’ll use the SIM chip for the new phone by fall.

Go to one of the threads whose title has “(triggers iOS bug)” in it. Walk through each page. It IS actually a feature, but it was poorly implemented, and 15.6 corrected that implementation.

Only Apple devices with the latest update are affected. I don't know if you can undo the latest updates or not, so far I've refused to do the update on all of my devices. The latest update also has a little glitch, they don't call it this, where once it's installed your battery life is automatically reduced by 30%. It's at the very top of the TOS so read it before you do the update.

ETA this issue is also mainly a Safari issue, I've had no issues with twitter, etc., when using Chrome.

I have an iMac that is 5 or 6 years old. I stopped updating it when Apple said the new OS software would scan your computer for child porn, before connecting to the cloud. I have philosophical object to using Cloud Storage, especially when they decide they have to scan and approve content, it's my content not theirs or anyone else's, where the hell is privacy and MY ability to decide what to do with my content and data. So I just ignored all updates. I'm currently at 11.5.2 Big Sur. I have the same refresh issue, now (7/26/22) after being seemingly immune.

So this is not just about the most current OS update. There is something more sinister than this. I believe this is Apple's intent to FORCE users to bring everything up to date, forcing compliance, which allows them to scan the content on my Hard drive.

I resist being "FORCED" to do anything by anyone, even if it for a good reason.

I haven't noticed anything on my iPad or iPhone.

UPDATE: Noticed this on my iPhone now and i'm using a two year old iOS.

That is beyond odd, it works fine for me using Chrome for iOS. I have an iPad Mini 2, and iPad 6th gen, and an iPhone 12 Pro, in addition to my iMac (High Sierra) and have zero issues with the continuous refreshing. Mediacom for house internet and Verizon for the iPhone.

What versions of the Sftw are you using? The latest or older?

Well looks like all my Devices are sync'd through the iCloud and as I perform actions (that require using iCloud). This still does not make sense. Why would a bug in the latest iOS affect my Devices with older OS's? I laughed this off because of my 2-3 yr old software, yet here I am with the same problem, that was not a problem before.

There is more to this than what is public, yes I am paranoid and with good reason.

Nothing will come of this. The sneaky shit they downloaded was probably forced upon them by gov. Nobody will care cause the Bug patch solved the users obvious problem and nothing will ever be said from Apple about other unmentioned shit was in the upgrades. Trojan Horse
