Male blossoms have straight stems, I pick the blossom, fold back the petals and rub the stamens on each other. Ok. Well. It works.

I'll try that. Was wondering how to tell the difference in the male and female blossoms. Now I know. I was out looking at them ealier, and all I saw were male blossoms. There is one small squash, and that's it. I hope it doesn't dry up. Cucumber vines are really growing with lots and lots of blooms. No cucumbers at all.

My husband had terrible cough a few weeks ago. He had to sit up to sleep. Finally went to see NP. NP didn't think it was infection but gave him antibiotic and 2 cough meds that he said would stop cough. They did nothing. So he started antibiotic and got better. Never ran a fever.
Hope you and hubby feel better soon.

I just posted what is probably a rant on the Jif thread. Since it's kind of run it's course, I thought I would cross post it here since it's really more about prepper frustration than anything...here it is:

I finally got my Jif returned tonight. Between our kids and grandkids next door and a husband who could live off of it, we eat a lot....some weeks about 60 ounces and others just 40. The dogs get a pretty good share of it because they are all old with bad teeth and love peanut butter crackers.

Being a prepper, I hated to show my hand by taking that much back and yes, I did get some remarks. I came close to trashing it but I just can't throw away that much money...sorry Jif. I started to do it in two trips but they made me show my driver's license and accept a gift card instead of the cash I paid for it with so I'm not sure that would have helped things. I could have objected but that would have just drawn more attention to myself.

We probably won't ever go back to it. I'm not happy with Smuckers for the fact that they had such a wide spread issue that they were forced to recall the whole Jif line and I'm not sure I will ever trust them again...I'd had some of that peanut butter for a while and they just now decided to recall it. There is more to this story than meets the eye because they should already have it back on the shelves. Also, we'd been meaning to start trying some healthier varieties but right now, in a town with only a WM super center for our groceries, we've had to take what they have in stock or do without. As soon as I can catch a break and get to the city for samples of other brands, we'll decide on something else. Meanwhile, I feel woefully under prepped with only enough peanut butter to get us through about a month.

I've been using Great Value (the Wal-Mart brand) of peanut butter and really like it. I have found some house brands that I just don't care for but this one is good.

with the size of the orders that Wally World puts out it's a good chance the manufacturer will be a big brand name doing the private labeling - that Great Value peanut butter probably alternates between the likes of Peter Pan and Jif

Dh eats a brand called "Nature's Promise" It's just peanuts and salt. I've only found it at Food Lion (don't know if you have that store)
I eat the Aldi brand. I don't like the WM brand, whoever makes it. I quit eating Jif quite a few years ago, I just didn't like the way it tasted.

We may be in the same boat, but if we go to the VA they will insist on testing us. I'd rather tough it out than do that. He did sleep in his recliner last night but early this morning he got in the bed.

Just catching up on this thread. Y’all have been busy!

Although it’s summer break, I haven’t had too much time to ”hold still” yet. I have been trying to work on getting me healthier and have been getting in daily walks as well as eating better. It feels great.
I also “unplugged” from all news for a few days. So great for me mentally.

My two adult sons recently came and we spent the two days together just hanging out and talking. It was just the three of us, and was SUCH a blessing to reconnect and have that time together.

I am currently with youngest and his friend visiting Charlotte, NC as they are thinking about relocating here. The 5 1/2 hour drive wasn’t so fun, but I think it’s been a needed and important trip. I think it has opened their eyes a bit. I THINK they are leaning on staying put in Virginia (hope so!), but I’m not giving my opinion (unless asked) because I want it to be their decision. We will do some more exploring today and will then head back tomorrow to VA.

If you’re so inclined, please send prayers for a continued safe visit and travels.

Groceries continue to rise, and I am a bit surprised at each trip. I honestly don’t know how families that were already living paycheck to paycheck will make it.

I need to work on creating a list of 10-15 healthier meals and rotate that menu each month. A lot of my preps are pasta and rice, and I’d like to balance it more with some healthier options.

Slow and steady ….

Hubby's dr did not test for cv- he said coughing was going around and no fever.

A friend of mine in Richmond has it after a recent vacation. BAD cough and congestion. Aches. They tested her for flu, strep, Covid all negative. She was given antibiotics for sinus infection.
She has given it to her hubby and son. Son went to doctor and they said RSV. More meds. She has been fighting it close to a week now.

I don't recall seeing this item listed for preps, but I'm going to add it -- super glue.

I wear New Balance shoes since they are the only ones I can get in narrow. They are expensive and the ones I bought a year ago were $65 MORE than the ones purchased a year prior. I wear them every day for years and then move them to garden shoes. My garden pair had the sole come loose from the shoe, so I super glued it back together several weeks ago and it's still okay. One of the pairs I wear daily started coming apart in the same area so yesterday I super glued it. The snap on my leather purse came loose about 9 months ago so I glued it in place -- still good to go. This was a very expensive leather purse that I purchased new at a thrift shop for $4!

I have arthritis in my hands and cannot open jars. I have a Black & Decker electric jar opener and a critical piece broke off several months back. I tried to replace it the unit with no luck so, you guessed it, I super glued the piece back on and to date it's still working.

After almost gluing my fingers to what I was working on, I always wear vinyl disposable gloves when using the glue and spread newspaper on the table under the project.

Other glues I use often are wood glue, tacky glue and Elmer's glue. I know there are hundreds available, but I'm not familiar with others so please add any you use with description. I'm always willing to try new items that will benefit me.

Yes, I'm sure the Great Value peanut butter is manufactured by some company that we would recognize if we heard it. Wal-mart doesn't manufacture anything--they just re-cycle whatever they handle. My grandson in Tennessee used to work for a food distributing company that handled many different types of food. The food items were re-packaged in all different brand name packages but was exactly the same food in each. Just glad that I found a peanut butter that I like without having to pay more for the name.

This is a dumb question, but I was out in the gardens this morning forcing my squash to have sex, LOL! I broke off a male blossom, and tried to pollinate the blossom that was on the baby squash. Do you have to pollinate eat blossom, or just the female ones? Mostly, it's only male blossoms. See, I told you it was dumb......

Canner is going with another 6 pints of ground beef. I made beef broth this time to go with it. I'm not going to do anymore ground beef, since I've used up all that was nearing a year old. Once I get back to Sam's, I'm going to be doing beef chunks in quarts. I've already got a good stock of Lipton Onion Soup mix, and will use that for the beef chunks.

Speaking of peanut butter, the only brand Cary will eat is Peter Pan. I've got a year's worth stored. When I open a new jar out of storage, I replace it.

Since a lot of us garden as a prep, I have a strange question. When you plant seeds are you an over seeder or an under seeder? I tend to under seed some things I think. I over seed beans though since I can relocate them easier. I thought about this while planting cucumbers.
Got the garden mostly done will wait til this evening for more shade.
Need to complete my Walmart order and send it in.
Got the second battery for the new lawn mower yesterday. Had to be ordered so I used curbside ordering, I parked and the guy came right out. Easy peasy

I've always been an over seeder. If all the seeds germinate and come up, I can thin them out.

I bought chicken feed today at a family owned feed store. In September of 2021 Layena was 17.50. Today 21.25. It was 21.95 at Tractor Supply last week. ADM scratch in September of 21 was 15.95. Today 18.25. My 2 bags of each came to $86 and change. I am really beginning to worry about the future. :hof:
FIgure out what you can grow or is growing locally for them. Supplement their rations anyway you can.

My big thing this week was the garden. Finally got most of the big stuff in. And my biobricks got delivered so we are good with firewood for the next few years. Needed them to gap this year as all the wood is green.

We got a short shower here, really just enough to send he goats running for the bus. Under the 32' school bus is their domain, by their choice. Goats do not like to get wet.

Dinner tonight was large butter beans with ham and pickled beets. The beats were delicious and the juice is also delicious. I need at least 6-8 more cases of pickled beets. Two cans a week for a year is 104 cans.
My littlest little loves beets! I craved them while I was pregnant with her, and she seriously loves them more than candy. I told DH yesterday that I need to plant a lot more of them.

Someone here recommended Happy Belly brand from Amazon. Our kids love it, and never complained when I switched from Jif a few months ago.

Those two roasts I pulled turned into 5 pints of canned beef chunks. I have another two roasts pulled for tomorrow.

I ordered another Coleman butane burner (2 is 1, and 1 is none). It arrived today. I need to stock butane and get more each time I find it.

Today was take the car to the shop day for oil change, tire rotation and new wipers. Also needed new sparkplugs and fuel injection cleaning. Rest is still in good shape. I try to keep up with regular maintenance.

I second Super Glue! I broke my glasses frame today, and the lens is precariously stuck in there because so far I can't find our tube. I'm about to try a glue gun next, but Super Glue is now on my list. :)

Got the 4 bales of straw out by the garden. Some put on. Really helps with weed control and moisture.

Daughter has used black grow plastic on a lot of of it so didn't need too much straw.

Got up at 6, got coffee, son got home so I left.
Been working all day. Worn out.
Have a pre fair meeting for 4-H leaders end of month. Trying to decipher it all but the kids are really excited about thier projects.
When my kids were young, I often made homemade peanut butter. Just bag of Spanish peanuts. Don't add anything. I put them in blender. Added some broke up ones if we wanted crunchy.

Oh yeah, duct tape and Gorilla glue. I have both. Gorilla tape too. Ironically, my arthritis in my hands is so bad I have no pinch and pulling tape off a Gorilla tape roll is almost impossible. Duct tape is slightly easier but still almost impossible. Getting old is okay, but the decrepit part stinks.

Also, battery drill and screws. My hands doing take kindly to using a hammer and nails.

As part of preps, I have tarps and sheets of plastic in case I have to cover broken windows or holes in (God forbid) the house.

Glue is great stuff ! I have a multipurpose one I have used for so many different things.

Dollar tree had packages of 'body washcloths'. 12 "×8" Threw a package in my car. Wish I had these when my kids were little.
Store appeared to be stocked but looking closely many items I used to find were missing. Freezer section very sparse.

Too funny! If me forcing the issue doesn't work, I won't have any babies, squash or cukes. There are just no bees around. It just dawned on me, yesterday, that the reason our apple tree was loaded in blossoms but no apples is that there were no bees to pollinate them, either. Usually, every morning when I go to the gardens, bees are swarming all over everything. Not a single one this year. I even thought about putting some sugar in the garden to see if that won't attract them.

I was hoping for a good garden this year, since it's the first time in 5 years to have a meaningful one. All of the banana peppers that we put in the huge flower pots are beginning to look bad. With all the rain, I think they are getting water logged, even though, there are holes in the bottoms for drainage. Tomato plants are loaded, but some sorta look deformed. Not perfectly round like I'm used to. We bought Beefsteaks this time not Better Boys. Bell peppers are looking good. Almost ready to pick a few of them. Beans are running wild, and hope to see blooms on them soon. Are pole beans self pollinators, or do they also need help from bees?

I need to be doing laundry, today, but there are storms to the west of us. Severe storms are in our forecast for later today. I'll wait, until tomorrow, so that I can make use of my solar dryer.

My garden is growing fair. The potatoes look good, but I haven't dug any yet. The green beans are starting to bloom. I have a good stand of purple hull peas. But my melons did not come up well. I planted 3 more hills yesterday. I need more okra planted. I planted zinnia and sun flowers yesterday for cut flowers. I have had sun scald on some of my peppers even though they have been out a while.

Next week is supposed to be dry and sunny with triple digit heat indexes. I dread it. But we will finally get the hay cut. It is going to be miserable. But you have to make hay while the sun shines.

Yesterday we went shopping. We went to 10 Box, Neighborhood Market, and our local Harps. I have never spent that much in one day before. I just bought more of what we normally use. I did buy some baby items for the grandbaby due in July. Diaper cream, tylenol, and such. Prices are still rising of course. Gas was 4.49 for regular. Diesel is 5.29. We took the gas burner. I wanted it because I can get more stuff in it than in the back seat of the truck. I bought 25 pounds of rice to use to make dog food if we can't get her dry food. I bought a 10 pound bag of pintos also. Those we eat. They had a 50 pound bag of beans too. But I like to be able to see them before I buy them. Light colored pintos are fresher than the dark ones and cook better.
We found some manager special on chicken wings at Harps. They were almost half price. I froze them for hot wings at some future time.

Today I have to put all this away and add a lower wire to my electric fence. I want to get a low couple of strands to keep the chickens out of the garden too

Made a good score at a moving sale. A lot of new clean metal (mostly flats) which is great for me because I am always building something. Also at the same sale, they had new in the package USA-made drill bits for fifty cents each. Even though I already have a lot at home I bought a large handful for my kids.
