I have a very picky eater who only likes Kraft shaky shaky or the real blocks of Parmesan ground fine. We mostly eat the real stuff ourselves but it gets expensive. He is a teenage boy, 6’4”…so you get the idea of his appetite. I did find a few boxes of great value elbow pasta today in the 3 lb. box so I bought two and added it to the big Tupperware container I keep it in. You could be right about the distribution points….and you know the bridge tax, everything gets more expensive out here. The pasta you were referring to is .88 cents per box so double what you are paying out there. It’s usually sold out or only a few boxes left. I usually buy ten boxes at a whack.

The blocks are 100% real. Kraft is 4% cellulose (wood pulp), cheap stuff is 9%. Many, many years ago, I had a friend taking a trip to Italy, and asked if he could bring something back for me. I said a wheel of Parmigiano Reggiano. Since there was no reaction on his part, I explained that I was joking. A wheel is 100 pounds, and the price back then was 10/lb., a cool $1,000.

Save and clean the Kraft container, fill it with the cheap stuff, and I doubt the teenager would know the difference. Almost anyone would know the diff between pre-grated Kraft and fresh grated real Parmesan. And while I like Parm, just like Howie Carr I'm a cheap bastard, and usually use Romano. With a stronger flavor, I use less.

I just checked S&S, and they are fairly low on most of their branded pasta. "Pastrnak" is taking up most of the shelf space. All of the other brands are plentiful and more expensive. People are definitely pinching pennies, and "lighty" hoarding, here.

South West Virginia area,

Kroger yesterday. In the meat section there is an end cap that usually holds meat. The big refrigerator was replaced with 4 dog beds in the food section. Big items that take up a lot of space, so you don't notice there is no food there.

Tomorrow I'm going to Tractor Supply to see if I can find any bags of chicken feed. It was pretty sparce last time I was there.

With all the talk about the flu with vomiting attached to it, I realized that I was out of Cola Syrup (for nausea). From personal experience, this stuff is soothing and a comfort when you can't stop throwing up or keep anything down. It used to be about $2 a bottle. my local pharmacies (Walgreens and CVS) websites say they don't have it, out of stock. Walmart used to carry it OTC, now you can only order it online, they don't carry it "in store" anymore!!!! I price checked Walmart and Amazon.... Amazon won for the price @ 4 bottles for $22.21, it's on the way.

The way I use it when I'm "sick" is crush some ice, put a couple of tablespoons of syrup and eat teaspoons of the mix.
Thanks for the reminder about Cola syrup. I didn't have anything at all for nausea. I also bought some ginger ale.

Glad you mentioned this.

Kroger brand sells bags of shredded sharp cheddar cheese.

I've noticed that the last few times I've bought it, it doesn't melt and blend together when under the broiler, or in the oven. It just stays shredded and gets hard.
I think they've changed the contents and suspect it's not really much cheese anymore.

I've gone to paying more for blocks of cheese and shredding it myself.
================================================

I remember quite some time ago reading a book I have on the Great Depression, that during that time they didn't have enough food to supply demand and started cutting products with cellulose until the population started to get very sick from all the wood pulp.

I learn something new everyday on here. The only time I buy already shredded is the Mexican blend. Does it say those other ingredients other package?

I have been buying a five pound bag of himilayan pink salt for $9.99 at Amazon Subscribe and Save. It was that price as late as Nov 2021.

A few days ago, the same bag of salt was offered at $14.95, with Subscribe and Save.

Thankfully, I had been buying extra and storing it away.

I passed on the offer this month.

Barry, you can buy pink Himalayan salt in one pound pouches at Dollar Tree, either in the store or online. Online the cases are still marked $1/lb and 12/case. https://www.dollartree.com/salt-84-himalayan-pink-salt-1lb-bags/290585

You are lucky you even have chicken and shrimp available. Ramen sells out at the local walmart on a daily basis. People usually buy 3 cases at a time. And for some reason all gatorade flavors and powerade. Can't seem to keep that in stock. This is in the Rio Grande valley in Texas. If you are not sure where that is, it is where a lot of the illegals are coming across.
My son stocks shelves at a local grocery store. He stocks both Gatorade and ramen noodles. Every day he orders 15 cases of chicken, 12 cases of a couple of other flavors and a few cases of the rest. Almost never gets anywhere near what he orders. If he’s lucky, he gets 6 cases of chicken and maybe a few of the others. They sell so much, in ordinary times they keep a “u boat” stocked in the back to refill the shelves.

Smith's in NE NV around noon today, my normal shopping day and time, and there hasn't been any snow to keep me from going out or to keep trucks from coming in, and no incoming storms or reason for people to buy more than usual.

I've been buying a few boxes of Kerr regular size canning lids every week for $3.09/box. I checked Lehman's site to see if they had canning lids in yet, and they had regular size for $84.99 for 360 lids. Add in $19.99 for shipping. That comes to 29.16 cents per lid, a huge increase over their previous price. The Smith's price was actually 2 cents per lids cheaper, even with factoring in sales tax. So I planned to just buy the 20 or so boxes they had during my shopping trip today. They have had the lids there for at least two months, so I didn't feel like I'd be depriving someone else of the opportunity to get lids. However, today the shelf price was 3.99/box, a 30% increase over last week. I decided I didn't need any more lids.

The new sale price for store-brand flour is now $6.71, up from $6.39. The regular price is still the same--$8.29. Morrell lard went from $1.59 to $1.99, a nearly 30% increase. Ramen is nearly non-existent each time I go in and has been for at least three months. What the heck happened to the pasta shelves?! They're about half the size they used to be. And when did a regular size can of Campbell's soup become almost $2? I don't buy canned soup, so I haven't been paying close attention, but that just seems outrageous.

I used to get store brand tortilla chips for 99 cents/bag. Now the price is $1.39.

I got lucky today and scored four 1-lb packages of organic ground beef for $2.99 each.

That is for finely grated parmesan, likely romano, and any other finely grated cheeses. The cellulose is basically sawdust, but they call it an anti-caking agent. Shredded cheeses likely don't have cellulose, it's just pure cheese cut very fine. Wood pulp cut very fine, shredded and mixed in, would be noticed. And sawdust, added to shredded cheese, would be noticed too.

Ever have a McRib?

Wood pulp? I thought it was plant fiber, not necessarily wood.

Sometime you ought to get the house brand shaky shaky and put it in the Kraft tube. See if he notices!
Did that to the kids all the time, they never noticed.

Now, this area--western end of Tex. hill country-- is having a long-term, serious shortage of canned cat food, across all vendors. Trac Supply, HEB, Walmart, dollar stores (we've got Family Dollar/Dollar Tree, Dollar General, and Big Lots here within an hour's drive.) Only one I haven't checked out is Lowe's Market in Junction (formerly Super S) but haven't had occasion to drive that way or to Bandera. Long ride to hear a purr LOL

Walmart website is out of mush cat food as well. Unavailable for store pickup AND for shipping.

Noticing also shortages in the sports drinks (gatorade type stuff) across store brands and name brands. There is some but not much of a selection. HEB is constantly fronting shelves, I was in the little Kerrville HEB Tuesday and there was at least one redshirt on each aisle pulling the ONE box out to the lip of the shelf. And sometimes spreading out adjacent products so as not to have a gap-toothed appearance. That's not usual or normal.

One thing I did notice in the Walmart, well two things AT Walmart, one was outside. ALL the conexes are gone from the parking lot. The traffic patterns for this store make it easiest for me to whip in off a side street into a back entrance and go behind the store to get to where I prefer to park--by the tire & lube, where there are employees very visible 50ft from the parking spots--and the entire back area and along the T&L side of the store is usually still cluttered with conex boxes until springtime. Jan 6th and they're GONE. Inside the store, the Valentine's stuff (that they had out Dec 23 to cover for the dearth of depth of Christmas stock) is picked over like a carcass after a pack of buzzards. I'll see if it still looks like that in a week or two when I get back into town.

Lowe's (the lumberyard this time, not the grocery) is fairly well stocked, not many gaps outside of plumbing and electrical odds and ends, but then they've always sucked at keeping track of the stuff that likes to jump in pockets and bigger boxes and wander out the door on its own. Fewer registers open: one at the commercial end and one set of four self-checks with an attendant who will open the adjacent register if she feels like ringing someone up. (Back to Walmart, and an observation that they seem to have more than the usual number of manned registers open.)

Hit Safeway last night after work. Lots of holes in canned goods, fresh fruit, milk. No whack and bake biscuits or cinnamon rolls, little bread. I was trying to get done quickly, so I didn't pay a lot of attention. Lots of people complaining about prices and quality, as well as picking up items, then putting back after checking the prices.

I was going to order trees from the extension or conservation district today - no go, as they are all sold out. I'm hoping to get more fruit trees planted, but we'll see if I can get them. Even mail order nurseries are already sold out (don't know if that's leftover from last year - or the ones for this year are already sold out)

I live in NE Colorado.

Just came back from Shop Rite.

Big gaps:
Tea, (as in tea bags)
Crackers, I going to assume these were probably all Nabisco products and screwed up from the strike.
Spices
Bagged salads, All the regular veggies were fine. (Possible recall maybe)
Random hole here or there nothing jumping out at me.

Canned foods were hit as well, but the store is having there annual can can sale.
Poor dude stocking was getting irritated. People were pulling stuff of by the dozen to get the sale price.
There are 2 spots in the store where all those products are still in the flats on pallets.

Way short on staff (this place pays very good and is always well staffed) , Lots of younger kids working the checkouts (all 20 or so were open) Some guys that usually stock were working the registers as well.
I'm assuming people are getting sick and can't come in.

You can pour the soda in a glass and stir it to get the fizz out. That works good as well.

(N MN) Walmart curb pickup today went well, with only one minor frozen veggie swap-out, which they solved with an upgrade.

Yep..it's Saturday, and I usually avoid town on the weekends, but today is the only day until later next week that daytime temps are going to climb above zero. With pickup...wasn't too bad an experience at all.

Noticed gas was up over $3.00/gal again at $3.04.

Local Wm (N.GA) is so consistently out of canned cat food of any sort I have transitioned the kittehs to dry. Currently using the "good" stuff. I'm sure that will get scarce soon too.

That's our problem....more precisely the cats' problem ;) We've got a kinda deep stash of cat mush but the young and healthy ones aren't being spoiled with it. Only one getting it is the 18 year old with bad teeth who can't bust up the dry kibble as well as she used to could. Rest of 'em are kinda jealous but oh well. Fluffy's earned her 'treat'. She'll get chicken legs if I can't find cat food for her when we finally run out.

At my local Grocery - Food Lion in Charlotte, NC - They had 6 chicken thighs for $9.00 - of course I passed them by - used to be 3.99. I do like to shop online at Wild Fork - great meat, great prices - they vacuum seal their meat and flash freeze. I found their chicken thighs for $1.02 a pound.

Yesterday at Wegmans in central Maryland the meat and poultry section was completely bare. The sandwich meats were well over half bare and same with bread.

There have been some weather issues this week, but this was a stark change. Other isles that were empty included the nuts and potato chips. A Food Lion located two counties south, but still in the DC area was the same situation.

Folks are talking about cat food shortages in many parts of the country. I haven't heard why there's a shortage. Does anyone here know? Wondering if it's because of the high cost of meat, or perhaps shortage of materials to make cans. I'm concerned because I lost my dear fur friend before Christmas and I'm scared to get another cat if I can't feed it.

It's mostly the can shortage, I think.

Just got back from Sams run. They had pretty much everything. What caught my eye was the TP. Plenty of it but Makers Mark only. Not a single roll of any other brand. Two days ago the local Arby's was out of any pig product. No ham or bacon. Today the local Taco Bell was closed due to having no food to serve. Never seen that before.

My brand of dry cat food is currently hard to find in the Indianapolis area. In the bag size that works best for me, it's nearly impossible - even through something like Chewy. I managed to find it at Target online - ordered 4 bags.

Neither here nor there.
Fareway still has porterhouse steaks for $9.95 a pound, OC got the last one in the meat counter this evening, I scored a huge rump roast for$2.99 a pound. The upside about the rump roast is they hadn’t removed the steaks from the end of the roast, yes it was 5gat large. There should be enough there for a roast, a pot of stew and maybe two steaks, I’m happy.

My laptop died and searching on this tablet is impossible... So, I'm not sure of that answer! I just know the last time I had a stomach bug, the cola syrup helped. Often when you have dry heaves with the flu, you should only take spoonfuls of liquid, as drinking more than that will make you vomit more.

Ok, fellow Timbombers, fess up, who was at the Bradford PA Aldies abt noon today? A couple came out with two carts loaded; TP, about 20 FLATS of canned goods, 12 bags of flour, multiples of other items I couldn't ID because I was waiting in the car for my DH, who loves to bargain hunt, and was too far to see exactly what they were loading into their small SUV. My DH came out complaining bc the milk was way over 4 dollars (we got milk a dollar cheaper in NYS on our way home), but he did come out with a huge pack of TP.
