First noticed this with Montgomery Wards in their last year. Then again in Kmarts death spiral. This year many places Cabela’s, TJ maxx. Ect. Crap packed so close you can hardly get through it with a cart.

And it is crap, too. I was in a TJ Maxx recently -- took a neighbor shopping. Mostly cheap items from China with a hefty mark-up.

Home deposit is doing the same thing in the isle the runs along the front of the store.
I wiped out a display with my cart that had 12' 2x4's on it trying to turn out the isle.

In the 90’s during college I worked at a Burlington….. omg we got some really really really nice stuff cheap!! I went to one a couple months ago and was sad it was a complete dump :( not at all like the one I worked at

I wonder if it depends on the demographics in the area? The closest one to me is near Memphis ( in Mississippi, near the state line, which makes it a suburb of Memphis), and I wouldn't be caught in Memphis for any reason. So, I wonder if this Burlington will be trashed, too.

I had a second job at a high end jewelry store in an up scale mall back in the late 90's. Their mark up was way more than 100%, but they were popular. They had a watch that I liked that was kinda reasonable, I think it was a Tag, now it would cost through the roof. I'm just fine with my $50 apple watch knockoff. Does exactly what I wanted, digital time and counts my steps.

God is good all the time

I seriously have filled my work wardrobe with designer stuff for a fraction of what it normally retails for.

I really need to consider going, even though, I don't know what the experience will be like. If it's trashy, or I feel in danger, I can always leave. I'm a sucker for good deals on name brand/designer clothing!

Ours is literally, a dump. And it's in a high end mall. I don't know why the management doesn't make them at least clean up the store. It's the filthiest department store that I have ever been in. Think Sav-a-Lot grocery store nasty. The last time I was in there (pre-Covid) I came home and took a shower.
They don't have good buys either, and the store was half empty.
It's probably a regional thing...

Yeah. Must be. I wish there was someone I knew that went to the one I'd go to that I could ask what it's like, before I go.

If there isn't one near you it probably isn't worth your while. You have to go in frequently and hunt (look thru all the racks, the stuff is mixed in with everything else.)

I went into Walmart today to grab a couple things. There was NO Christmas decorations, tree, music, signage anywhere inside or outside. If you didn't know what the date was on the calendar it could be summer or anytime of the year. I never remember no Christmas decorations or tree when you went into the store....ever.

Just saying, Merle Hay Mall is in Des Moines not WDM. Pretty much on the border of Urbandale, but still in DM.

When K-Mart, Penneys and Sears were closing stores they were bringing in stuff from other stores to discount and get rid of. Some good bargains but tons of carp to go through to find them.

Don't know if you've been there lately, but mall is on its last legs. That area is extremely dangerous after dark. They are talking about turning the mall into Section 8 apartments.

[The problem stems from all of the Chicago Section 8 families they dumped in the area . . . you can Google that. It wasn't that bad when I first moved here!]

Oh, you're one of THEM. I'm married to one of THEM. :gaah:
If my wife ever comes up missing, Hobby Lobby is the first place I'll look for her.

I'm an honorary one of THEM. I crochet.

I like the "I Love This Cotton" brand of yarn, as well as some of the other yarns that Hobby Lobby carries. I avoid other sections of the store! I go there only for yarn and once a year (or so) archival markers for my photo albums.

I’ve been in Burlington stores in So Cal and Sioux Falls. Biggest difference is SF is full of Muslims and the CA stores are full of Central American immigrants. Both very short on stock and filthy.

filthy.

There's a shoe warehouse place near here.

I've bought the same Sketcher shoes for many years.

Was in last week, the Sketcher selection was noticeably abbreviated.

None of the ones I like were in stock.

Skechers is the only shoe I can wear these days. I noticed that even in their retail stores they aren’t getting the stock they used to.

Our TJ Max had a section on American made products, clothing, shoes, socks, cook ware. Shelves were not supper full through out the store. The Ross store was very empty of products. I like Ross for buying kitchen ware.

Clothes shopping makes my lower back hurt, and so I don't go often. I'm holding out until the big die off. Then clothes will be optional. I need nothing more than a kilt most days as it is. December 1st will be 70 degrees in my AO. I would love to join a nudist colony here if I weren't so conservative LOL! And I wouldn't know how to control my wild weasel anyway....

I miss Mervyn's. And I'm out of options.

it's West Des Moines to me, anything west of Merle Hay Road is W. Des Moines.

Well, if yer other half and my better half bump into each other we'll BOTH be in DEEP CARP...

RELIC will likely teach her about Ollie's as a source for materials. And THEN there will be MUCH crafting.

Look. I have lost my living room, my dining room, and an upstairs bedroom/studio AND her upstairs bedroom/office.

SERIOUSLY!! I have a 3 1/2 by 4 1/2 foot corner for my desk and half the bedroom. OH and the kitchen (only solonf as I am diligent about CHASING CRAFT CARP OUT!!

BUT, if we went and burnt ALL of her completed craft SCHTUFF, it's STILL CHEAPER than an updated SSRI script.
