Dr. Bill McGuire one of the geologist that first brought La Palma and the possibility of a mega tsunami to the worlds attention is commenting on this blog La Palma's Cumbre Vieja eruption. Generally he is saying that as to this eruption there is no reason to panic yet. He and is crew stopped monitoring La Palma in the early 2000's. He feels that the Spanish geologists are monitoring the situation and will let us know if the block begins to slide.

Having worked with many fine geologists I understand his point and I am sure the Spanish Geos are as good as any, also having worked as a geologist under management I am also just as sure the Spanish management are just as corrupt and stupid as any other.

Anyway more than worth a read. McGuire

On TB every waking moment
54 quakes in last 24 hours (almost midnight their time)
27 of those quakes were 3 plus magnitude. 3.9 highest. No 4s yet, but mags have been creeping up over last few weeks.

this link is set for quakes all mags over last 24 hours so will fluctuate as time/days progress

I'm going to be visiting the coast in a couple of days. What's the best way to monitor this thing while I'm there?

several on Youtube, I listed just a few below. Many show pretty much same view, but some show different views.

Youtube - La Palma livestreams:

afar tv has 3 camera locations on two livestreams going with two different live chats in English. Camera feed 1 and camera feed 2 runs another with an inset alternating livestream/map/data within it.

TelevisionCanaria runs livestreams

TV la Palma runs livestreams

la vanguardia runs livestreams

Has Bushcraft Bear posted lately? I can't find him anywhere. Are we still looking at a threat to the east coast?

Here is a summary of what I learned in the past 24 hrs. These are my unproven ideas which are trying to explain what is happening with the volcano. Believe it or not.

The deep earthquakes (30-40km) indicate the magma pushing from the mantle plume to the upper mantle. There it finds the old plumbing and starts to go up faster. It is pushing up through the vertical, shaft like, tube to the surface. This magma is very hot and under very high pressure, but it cannot shoot right through because the weight of the magma already in the shaft controls its ascent.

Since it cannot go faster it spreads sidewise and occupies the old storage chambers. It pushes trough and breaks various obstacles, enters the pockets and fills dikes and sills with fresh magma. While it is doing this, the gases in magma (mainly H2O and CO2) explosively depressurize and create earthquakes. Judging by the depth of these quakes at the moment, the “A” – Upper Mantle Storage (15-20km) and “B” – Lower Crustal Storage (8-12km) are being filled.

Once they are full and cannot contain any more magma the pressure from the bottom will build up and the eruption could intensify. At the same time the magma will start to invade the “C” – Shallow Intrusive Complex at the depth of < 5km. We will see it by earthquakes starting at that depth and becoming shallower.
If that storage fills up and the current fracture cannot take in any more magma, we might see more vents opening and erupting. Some of them could be at the top of the ridge.

No one really knows when the breakup of the flank will happen, but once the vents on the ridge start to open and erupt, I think it will be inevitable.

If the push of magma from the mantle plume stops for some reason, then the whole operation will obviously stop as well. However, I don’t see it happening and in fact with the new M class flare from the Sun hitting us on Monday I think it might even intensify.

Neither here nor there.
I don't know how to post photos from FB here, someone is finland has posted video of the sky, they're seeing gravitational waves (that's what he called them) in the atmosphere there.

Here is another look at the CME, this time courtesy of STEREO Ahead. An impact past our planet will be likely within the next 72 hours and could lead to at least minor (G1) to moderate (G2) geomagnetic storming once it arrives. Perhaps some good news for aurora sky watchers towards the beginning of the upcoming week. A final update regarding this event will be released later today.

Someone asked earlier what to look for. To the best of my knowledge the North Atlantic doesn't have the tidal wave bowies that the Pacific has. I would bookmark live beach view from the Azores and the Bahamas. If you see the tidal wave hit the Bahamas, the East coast of the US has about 45 minutes, or less, depending on where you are...
