Massive operational and intel failure with Biden’s withdrawal. Call it like it is, don’t sugar cost it because he isn’t the last guy. Relying on the kindness of the Taliban is as bad a strategy as it gets. Fingers crossed it doesn’t erupt.
Zero confidence in US assessment of Taliban command and control or discipline to control the situation.

If they would start putting a shiv in the guts of taliban types, things might change.

Liz Cheney knocks 'Trump/Biden calamity unfolding in Afghanistan'
BY JOSEPH CHOI - 08/15/21 08:00 AM EDT 330 Comments

Rep. Liz Cheney (R-Wyo.) is blasting both the Trump and Biden administrations as a Taliban takeover of Afghanistan's central government appears to be imminent.

"The Trump/Biden calamity unfolding in Afghanistan began with the Trump administration negotiating with terrorists and pretending they were partners for peace, and is ending with American surrender as Biden abandons the country to our terrorist enemies," Cheney tweeted on Saturday.

On Sunday, it was reported that the Taliban had entered Afghanistan's capital city of Kabul, with negotiators reportedly going to the presidential palace to discuss a peaceful transfer of power.
One day earlier, President Biden defended his decision to withdraw U.S. forces from the country, arguing that spending more time in Afghanistan after more than 20 years would not have made a difference.

"This isn’t 'ending endless wars.' This is American surrender, empowering our enemies, and ensuring our children and grandchildren will have to fight this war, at much higher cost," Cheney wrote in a subsequent tweet on Sunday, appearing to shoot back at Biden's argument for ending the U.S. military presence in Afghanistan.

The top Republican in the Senate, Minority leader Mitch McConnell (Ky.), on Saturday urged the Biden administration to intervene to prevent the Taliban from taking over Afghanistan.

“It is not too late to prevent the Taliban from overrunning Kabul. The Administration should move quickly to hammer Taliban advances with air strikes, provide critical support to the Afghan National Defense and Security Forces (ANDSF) defending the capital, and prevent the seemingly imminent fall of the city," McConnell said in a statement.

“If they fail to do so, the security threat to the United States will assuredly grow and the humanitarian cost to innocent Afghans will be catastrophic,” he added.

If the reports of Saleh going to Panjshir are correct (and like I said I have my doubts; some earlier reports claimed he's in Tajikistan), it's important to note that earlier today pro-TB sources said TB fighters are moving towards Panjshir. Watch this space closely.

What really surprises me the most out of all the events of past few weeks is this whole peaceful transition thingy combined with TB allowing seniors leaders to go. TB lower ranks are screaming blood and they want some kind of satisfaction. Will Saleh be that sacrifice? We'll see

Oh boy. If this is true, and I have my strong doubts right now, Saleh might have just walked into a death trap.

US will keep its core diplomatic presence in Afghanistan, per Blinken statement There are signs that the US is willing to recognise a government led by Taliban if they pay some lip service to the women’s rights and don’t harm diplomatic missions

The more they deny the comparison, the stronger the comparison gets.
They deny it because it's uncomfortable. But it's the same darn thing - we leave, and the enemy takes over.

September 10, 2001 - Taliban and AQ run Afghanistan

August 15, 2021 - Taliban and AQ run Afghanistan

20 years, and all publicly stated goals end up a failure.

Privately stated goals may be another matter.

The only real difference is the South Vietnamese were cut off from all aid by the DNC run Congress while the Kabul government wasn't.

US mission in Afghanistan 'successful' - Blinken

US Secretary of State Antony Blinken has said that the United States' mission in Afghanistan has been "successful", as Taliban forces surrounded Kabul and US embassy staff were being evacuated.

The Afghan government has conceded there will be a "transfer of power" as the Taliban rapidly gained territory across the country culminating in today's move against the capital.

The US sent in troops to ensure the safe evacuation of their personnel on the ground.

Mr Blinken told ABC: "It's why we had forces on hand to make sure we could do this in a safe and orderly fashion. The compound itself, folks are leaving there and going to the airport.

Despite the precipitous move, he rejected comparisons with the chaotic American departure from Saigon in 1975 as the Vietnam War drew to a close.

"This is not Saigon," Mr Blinken said. "The fact of the matter is this: We went to Afghanistan 20 years ago with one mission in mind. That was to deal with the people that attacked us on 9/11. That mission has been successful."

NATO, meanwhile, has said that finding a political solution to Afghanistan conflict was more pressing "than ever" as the Taliban stood poised to take power on the outskirts of Kabul.

"We support Afghan efforts to find a political solution to the conflict, which is now more urgent than ever," an official at the 30-nation alliance told AFP.

The official said "NATO is constantly assessing developments in Afghanistan" following a lightning sweep by the insurgents to the edge of the capital.

"We are helping to maintain operations at Kabul airport to keep Afghanistan connected with the world," the official said.

"We also maintain our diplomatic presence in Kabul. The security of our personnel is paramount, and we continue to adjust as necessary."

Who's who behind the Taliban leadership

The Afghan authorities signalled there were negotiations under way to avoid bloodshed in Kabul, and to hand power to a "transitional government".

The United States is unlikely to change its military strategy in Kabul unless the Taliban impact the evacuation of the embassy, a US official said.

The official, speaking on the condition of anonymity, said that the United States had not yet seen the Taliban enter Kabul in a major way.

France said it was making the repatriation of several hundred of its citizens and security priority, faced with what the Elysee said was a "very worrying deterioration of the situation".

Germany has shut its embassy in Kabul and again called on German citizens to leave Afghanistan.

"The security situation has deteriorated drastically. The German embassy Kabul is closed as of Aug. 15," the foreign office in Berlin said on its website.

Sweden's embassy personnel in Kabul will leave immediately and the evacuation is expected to be completed tomorrow, Swedish Foreign Minister Ann Linde said.

"All deployed staff will be out by tomorrow," Ms Linde told a news conference. "The Swedish Migration Agency is working to bring home the locally employed staff."

Italian embassy staff in Kabul will return to Rome today, the foreign ministry said.

A military aircraft will leave Kabul at 9.30pm local time, a spokeswoman said, adding that most of the embassy staff had left the building yesterday and are currently at the airport.

She declined to say whether the ambassador would be among those leaving on tonight's flight and said it was premature to say that Italy had actually closed its embassy.

Canada said it was temporarily suspending its diplomatic operations in Kabul and that its personnel were on their way back home, according to a statement.

"The situation in Afghanistan is rapidly evolving and poses serious challenges to our ability to ensure the safety and security of our mission," Foreign Minister Marc Garneau said in the statement.

Canadian personnel "are now safely on their way back to Canada," he added.

Meanwhile, United Arab Emirates airline flydubai will suspend flights to Kabul from tomorrow, a spokesperson said.

A flight to Kabul today returned to Dubai before reaching the Afghan capital, the spokesperson said, adding that flights would be suspended until further notice.

As someone who briefly worked this desk stateside (about a month) when it was part of AFDC (I don't know if it still is), I can say this is madness beyond any of the stupid I saw when I was doing it.

How in the heck are people supposed to get the paperwork TO a closed embassy and fill out FORMS, especially if (as I expect) the internet is likely to be taken down or severely hacked at any moment?

I mean I did have one case of a guy who was mentally ill somewhere in Central America (an American) and the DC office kept asking for "more paperwork before we can repatriate."

I made my boss get on the phone when the US embassy told us, "The local authorities told us you have 24 hours to remove him or they will shoot him dead."

I let my boss deal with that one....
