Is A Liquor Shortage Looming?

Alcohol sales rose dramatically during the coronavirus pandemic as some relieved stress with an adult beverage. But now, that could change as liquor shortages are metastasizing across parts of the U.S.

Internet searches for "liquor shortage" have exploded to record highs this summer, especially in states like Michigan, North Carolina, South Carolina, Illinois, and Ohio.

According to local news reports in several states, liquor shortages are developing and leaving shelves bare.
"I've never had it this bare," a bar manager in Durham, North Carolina, told ABC Action News.

"Broadly speaking, there have been strains on the global supply chains of a variety of products throughout the entire pandemic, and not just here," North Carolina Alcoholic Beverage Control Commission spokesperson Austin McCall told Salon. "The retail demand for spirituous liquor has remained high even as more bars and restaurants have opened in recent months, straining supply even further."
Take a labor shortage involving a lack of truck drivers, dock workers, and warehouse employees, then shake that up with backed up docks, slower manufacturing processes and more expensive raw materials, and you get a quick lesson in how supply chain economics is having a direct impact on small businesses all over the U.S. Everything from the labor market and the sudden re-opening of bars to a lack of glass bottles and aluminum cans is blamed for liquor shortages reported in Winooski, Vermont; Durham, North Carolina; and Sioux Falls, South Dakota. -Forbes
The consequences of the virus pandemic have resulted in more alcohol consumption in the U.S. So far, there's no indication on social media of panic buying. But as we've seen before, that can abruptly change.

A liquor store is the very foundation, of any community.

Anything that would affect the operation of a liquor store,
is therefore going to have an adverse affect, on the community
in which the liquor store resides.

Just another attack on the deplorables is how I see it.

Will plan on a trip to the liquor store tomorrow. I have seen some open
spaces on their shelves recently, so it is apparently getting ready to get worse.

Please be safe everyone. Make sure to thank the operators of the liquor store
for being there, when you check out.

Regards to all.

Another type of “Self Fulfilling Prophecy“?
1. Spread the word of a shortage.
2. Everyone rushes out to the stores buying all the stock.

Thereby causing the shortage!

Just like the Ammo and Toilet Paper Shortages.

YMMV and this is just my initial thoughts on the matter.
If ”they” can start a rumor and we react by causing the rumor to become true; causing lots of people worry and grief, then “they” have succeeded yet again!

I thought the toilet paper shortage was people hearing the word "lockdown" and thinking they wouldn't be allowed to leave their houses.

Thing is you can use liquor for many different things, not just getting drunk.

Even if you use it to barter with its useful in your preps.

Smokes, chew, liquor, mary jane. There will always be folks willing to barter what you need for these items. I have even entertained the idea of a small tobacco plot and you can roll the smoke in the tobacco leaves like a cigar I guess. rolling papers are made out of rice paper I believe and I have no idea how to make that.

Guess I have some research to do!

For most of us, this means little, or just a reconsideration of stocking up a bit further.

Think about all those folks out there who depend on liquor just to feel better. You think the psychotropic drugs might be a problem? Think about no booze.
You don’t have to be a drink to have a couple of drinks.
Heck, any more, all it takes is two glasses of wine and I’m set lol!
But to be on the safe side, rumor or not, it’s smart to keep preps up of anything used weekly.
I let my wine stash get really low and we ARE wine people. Hubby won’t let me just randomly open any of the $$$$ reds we have collected so I just quietly buy 15$ or less, Sauvignon Blancs and Pinot Noirs.
Told him of it was an emergency he wouldnt stick his nose in the air

Yeah, but if you didn't have any wine at all, how much of a problem would it be for you?

Now how much would it be for the serious drinkers out there?

That's what I'm getting at, really.

True.
Sorry.
Well, I’d be super bummed out, I can tell you that! But I’d manage, of course.

I do love my cold beer too, though, but I don’t know how long canned beer, lasts without going stale? 6 months in a very cool basement?

Either that or learn how to make your own and do it fast. Oh and don't advertise you are doing this or you will have all kinds of people beating on your door.

Easier than you might think. A couple two-liter bottles and these

will do the job.

I don't drink myself, but I've tried it. The idea is amazing; fruit juice, sugar and yeast go into a 2-liter plastic bottle. Then you put one of those caps on and leave it to sit somewhere cool, dry and dark. Two weeks later, you have a 30-proof wine, and you can actually customize it from there.

BN, that method is crude at best. I made a Mead once using my beer making gear. It’s very expensive to make because the base for a 5 gallon batch is pure honey. About 10-15 lbs IIRC. That much honey is expensive. I flavored it with cinnamon and made it “bochet” style. It was a huge hit with everyone who tried it.

I bought a gallon jug of rubbing alcohol on clearance at walmart a few months ago.

No need for booze.

But I can see where the alcoholics will be a little on edge if they cant get their fix.

Not to mention the nicotine fiends when cigs go away.

Lord have mercy.

Meh..if it comes to that, and people know you have it to trade, they also know you have it to steal.

More Covid disruption of 15 days to flatten the curve…
*French are pissed so French brandy is limited on shelves
*Certain beers sketchy, and who knows why
*Distilled water in 5 gallon jugs fine until last fall
*And as the woman in charge of the crowded restaurant said last night,
“no one wants to work”
Man o Manischewitz, THEY have played this Covid bullshit for all it is worth… :kaid:

An industry insider was telling me that these shortages are going to be a thing.

One workaround is to explore your local distilleries and such. Don't get hung up on the big name, legacy products.

F'rinstance, Rebecca Creek is a damned fine sippin' whiskey, made in Texas.

Examples abound.

It wouldn't affect us that much, but I do like to have adult beverages around the holidays.

Dennis, I have to confess that I'm consumed by curiosity about something. You are Mormon, and my understanding is that alcoholic beverages are forbidden.... but yet you make beer and mead. Can I ask why?
