CHAT Inside temperature whine (heh)

Okay, I have nothing in particular to talk about this evening, so I thought I’d whine about the inside temperature in the front of my house. First, that “blocking high” that caused you in the west to burst into flame  has left you and settled over Texas per normal. From now until late September, EVERY DAY will be 90-100 for a high and 74-78 for overnight lows. So, now that things are “normal,” the front half of my house becomes uninhabitable at about 2 pm and finally cools off enough to tolerate at about 8 pm.

The a/c is heavily biased toward the back part of the house, which stays tolerable. But the front half gets to over 85° by afternoon.

/whine ;)

That sucks....hottest our place in SW Wa a couple weeks ago when it was 114 outside was 81 and I thought that sucked.

Where I am supposed to be.
Is it so hot at the front because of the windows there? Do you have those heat reflecting curtains or film on your windows? Just trying to help :geek: here's a couple of ideas that might help:

Remember when I was rooming with Libertarian for a bit?

San Antonio. No A/C.

The bathroom in the center of the house was so hot the candles softened in there and one could not shower till after Sunset-even the Cold Water came out scalding hot.

Had a bathroom in Florida that faced the setting Sun-cement block building, no window in the bath. Same thing-no matter how dirty and sweaty you were from working [[in my case Hot Tar Roofing and pre-stressed cement manufavtuirng, I did not dare go in and try to shower before 10PM-it would likely be a Death Sentence.

No. It’s because there are only 3 vents in that entire area., where there are 6 vents in the back half of the house in smaller rooms. I can’t close the extra vents because it will raise the “pressure” in the a/c system to the point where it would kill the compressor.

Sat, one cannot truly appreciate the heat down here unless they’ve lived a summer here. It’s why I was laughingly busting the balls of people complaining about the heat out west. It was in fun; the reality is that I knew exactly how you all felt. (Pussies)

The problem in Baytown was the humidity.
Right. And again, normally here in Austin, the humidity drops off significantly by the first of July. Not this year. Humidity is still through the roof and grass growing like it’s May. It’s still lush and green, though it should have been brown and dead by now. There’s one section of the yard that I only mow occasionally. It’s a narrow strip on one side, about 4’ wide. I haven’t cut it in two months. The grass is over four feet high. That’s 6” growth every week.

you didnt say if you had a basement, during the hottest day my basement is always 10 degrees cooler than upstairs, and the air conditioner registers are closed in the basement, like you, upstairs I just have to run the air and pay a little more, gonna be 100 here most of this week,

You don't mention family there.

.Hell, I left Michigan, MY HOME, at 18 because of the weather.

I had been asking my parents since I was SIX if the government MADE us stay there. I HATE COLD WEATHER. I learned in Texas I hate crazy hot weather too. So I searched out a TEMPERATE climate to settle into.

What good does it do to live in a place you cant enjoy getting outside for most of the day and year?
Remember, you can ignore the few actual liberals you meet here but you can't ignore
the 100+ temps you meet there.

Most of Washington state is CONSERVATIVE unless you go make your bed in Seattle or (to a lesser extent ) Tacoma.

Its now regular summer weather upper 90's during the day and upper 70's at night, we are in the dog days for sure.

I can manage when its 82 in the house but higher than the a/c kicks in. Fans are a blessing.

My central air and heating died last fall. It's old and I haven't the money to replace it. I have ceiling fans and a small heater that is also a fan. I go outside in the shade in the afternoon Right now (evening) I have the back screen door and the front security door open to the outside to get the temp down so I can sleep. All the ceiling fans are going.

I feel for you Dennis.

I feel for you! If Dennis had no AC like you do he would obviously melt.

Get a small window unit if you can Marsh, at least for your bedroom.

All the best...

I have fans in the front of the house. I also have a decent sized room dehumidifier. Unfortunately it pumps a lot of heat into the room as it does it’s job. It’s the only thing that keeps the inside humidity tolerable. It has a 1.5 gallon catchbasin. I have to empty it about every 14-16 hours this year. It’s run continuously since the first of May. In a normal year, it would’ve quit by July 1st or so.

Why do I stay? Because the state has a huge tech job market. Also, no state income tax, which allows me to keep at least $10,000 more of my own money every year. When I retire, then I’ll look to other places. But I’ll never move to the Communist west coast. Ainit, you say that the liberals “only live in the cities.” Though true, they make the laws under which every citizen of the state must live. I can’t go back there. I won’t go to prison for owning certain guns that are legal most everyplace else.

Well, it's like people from Colder climates laughing as to how Southerners can't drive in snow/ice, Diff'rent Strokes for Diff'rent Blokes.

This is likely the start of something akin to Climate Change. FL thinks I'm an "Climate Denier'...actually I am a Climate Realist. I've dug Oceanic fossils from "San Antonio to Des Moines Iowa and in-between, picked up fossil Deer antler, pig bones and other land critters from the coastline on the Gulf. There are Fossil Whale skeletons in the Egyptian Desert and the flash-frozen Mastodons in Siberia.

The Climate does change-constantly, however, there is not much we can do about it without endangering ourselfs and other life on this Blue Rock.

Pollution and making things better? Absolutely. Don't shit in your own Fruitbowl but one better have a bettr means to replace what you have BEFORE you replace it.

Anyhoo-off to water the gardens before the heat sets in.

I can attest most in the south can't drive at all, much less in any weather.

I have noticed that most houses have poorly designed AC systems. When we built out house, we insisted on metal ducting and not that expandable plastic. We also have two systems. One for the upstairs and one for down.

Reasons:

1) Metal ducting lasts a very very long time. The plastic that everyone likes and is low cost, rots in a few years. Nothing like a tear to really increase your A/C costs. We have seen that in many rentals.

2) We have two units as it better cools the house and I was a fan (no pun intended) as 2 is 1 in prepping. It has saved us more than once when we had an issue with a unit.

3) I have also noticed that installers really don't care where they put registers as long as they put the totals ordered. That doesn't always help.

Texas population is about 30 million.
It has increased 16% since 2010.
Most of them seem to figure out what is necessary for home environmental control and lawn care.

But this is true anywhere you go. In Alaska, it was the cold and no see ums.

In Texas, we put window heat film outside, cellular shades inside, and curtains over that because the heat entering any room is entering the house and must be cooled.

As far as lawns.
Cultivated lawn turf grows best when cut, fertilized and watered.
Native grass and weeds grow best when left uncut and dry.
If grass is 4 feet tall, it isn't lawn grass.
Yes . . . there is a cost to having a lawn. It isn't necessary. In today's urbanized world, a home without lawn care is very easy to accomplish.

Having the same problem here in South Central Kansas. I’m sitting here waiting for the dew to evaporate so I can mow. This time of year, the grass is usually turning brown and only needed mowing every 12 to 14 days. It’s still green and growing like May 1st, and I’m still having to mow every 5 days. It’s almost 90, humidity at 60% and I haven’t even started mowing cause dew is still on the grass.

It’s going to be a miserable afternoon,

It's 85 in this room inside right now, with windows open and no AC. But the humididity is just 56%.

Changes in altitude ... :D
Wow! I couldn't live like that unless I absolutely had to. 68 in my house right now and I'm loving it. I just finished lunchtime exercising...so I like the coolness in here.

Freeholder

This too shall pass.
The thermometer on my desk is reading 86 degrees and 67% humidity. If I go upstairs, it will be quite a bit warmer, even though I have a fan going up there (black metal roof). Downstairs, three of the four ceiling fans are running. It's bearable, as long as I don't have hard physical work to do. Part of the house is shaded by the black locust trees in the back yard, including two on the west side of the house, and that helps quite a bit.

I did get a whole-house window fan to put in one of the windows upstairs, but it came right before I got the brown recluse bite and I haven't gotten it installed yet. If we can get the house to cool off better at night, it will keep the indoor temperatures down for most of the day.

For all y'all that are experiencing heat and are uncomfortable or at risk. Obviously stay hydrated but
Get wet!
Since I have worked outside in both Az hot and somewhat dry and and Ne hot in the summer and most days very humid. It works for both. Get a tshirt douse it in water and slap er on. Drops your core temperature down. Just make sure you start and keep it up BEFORE you get over heated. I am acclimated so it takes a dang hot day for me to need it but folks like Dennis keep it in the mental checklist.

That works good in mid to low humidity. By 10am this morning, working outside my shirt was soaking wet (just by sweat) and at lunch I made the mistake of sitting in the wife's chair with shirt on. Got the look when I said what!? Had to take it off and hang it outside.
