DD works for Starsucks and confirms they are having quite a few shortages. I am so excited!! At home, my locker was not selling beef or pork "due to high expensive prices". I am visiting Mom (where I used to live) and called the locker here. The locker owners are my old neighbors, and she remembers and misses me. A customer did not pick up their order, so I am getting 103 pounds of pork (already cut ham, chops, bacon, and sausage) for .....$190!!

Will hit Aldi later today to stock up on a few things before the drive home.

Geez, i guess I am more fortunate than I realized.

I have been getting food from those long mobile food pantry lines so that I can redirect most of our food budget to paying for my wife’s lifesaving cancer treatments.

Anyway, about a month ago, a church that was running a mobile pantry gave those of us in line 4 one pound bags of USDA shelled walnuts.

Then last week, a different church gave me 12 one pound bags of USDA shelled walnuts.

That added up to 16 one pound bags of shelled walnuts in total.

In recent months we have also been given two pound bags of whole almonds and two pound bags of pistashio nuts as well.

I made my wife a big birthday brownie (made with Duncan Hines brownie mix) instead of buying an expensive birthday cake, and I was able to mix some walnuts into the batter, thanks to those donations.

I knew they weren’t cheap, but I never imagined that they would cost $8.29 plus tax each on the open market.

Last time I bought a bag of shelled black walnuts was 2018 at the holiday season, it might have been 2017, and they were pushing $20 a pound here at the local Sam's Club. Haven't seen shelled black walnuts anywhere else.

These are regular walnuts, not black walnuts.

But I am mighty glad to have them.

You can find english walnuts here, in itty bitty bags and for a price. My personal preference is black walnuts.

I just went to another mobile food pantry this morning, and they gave me 4 more pounds of the shelled walnuts, which now makes it 20 pounds, minus those I have already eaten or put in my wife’s big birthday brownie. (She won’t eat walnuts straight, but loves them in homemade brownies.)

I definitely need ideas on how to preserve some of these nuts, but I don’t want to hijack this thread.

So I am going to head over to Granny’s Kitchen, and put out an inquiry for ideas on how to preserve my stash of nuts.

If you have ideas on what I can do, would you be kind enough to post your suggestions over there?

Please bear in mind that I am not an experienced cook or canner like alot of you. You all probably know how to do alot of things I don’t yet know how to do.

Thank you in advance.

Inflation will cause grocery prices to rise even higher by October: Billionaire supermarket owner

John Catsimatidis, the billionaire owner and CEO of New York City supermarket chain Gristedes, warned on Monday that inflation will lead to even higher grocery prices by October.

Speaking on "Varney & Co." on Monday, Catsimatidis said he expected that "by October you’re going to have over a 6% annualized rate of inflation."

Catsimatidis, who is also the CEO of Red Apple Group, a real estate and aviation company, made the prediction one week after it was revealed that U.S. consumer prices rose last month at the fastest pace since August 2008.

If I could have one kind of nut tree, it would be pecan. They taste better, go with everything, and they’re the only nut that tastes good raw. You’re lucky!

We don't care for walnuts much, so the pecans are a God send. Our tree was just a sprout that Cary dug up off my grandparent's farm years ago. It is huge now, and produces lots of pecans for us. We gather them in the fall. Let them dry a bit, then sit around the wood heater during the winter shelling and chopping them for either the freezer or to oven can.

Freeze them if you have the freezer space.

ETA even though those are probably english walnuts, if your wife likes nut butters you can turn some into a nut butter and put on toast, etc., they are very high in antioxidants, etc., and will benefit her and greatly.

Stopped at Randall's on Ben White Blvd in Austin. My bride observed that the dairy section didn't seem as though it was being restocked as often; there were gaps in the cases.

No B & M brown bread at my local Fareway, I'll check HyVee this weekend. Fareway did have plenty of baked beans, many different brands including B & M brand.

Went to the local Safeway this morning since they had sirloin on for $4.99 lb. Got my favorite butcher to cut me 2 value packs (that was the limit for the Just4u members). 2 inches thick (these are closer to 3), cap and fat left on (he knows me too well). It was about $55 per pack, but I'll cut them in half and vacuum pack them.

They finally got egg roll skins in (they've been out for about 3 weeks now) so I got 2 of those and the fresh bean sprouts so I can make egg rolls for the freezer this weekend.

Noticed that Gatorade (ugh) is still pretty much wiped out. The cracker selection has shrunk again and a lot of bare spaces. Didn't go down the baking aisle, will save that for next time since I want to get more flour to keep in the spare refrigerator.

Having a hard time getting corn husks for tamales, since Safeway never seems to have them. Kroger does, but the quality is iffy. Guess I'll get on-line and see if I can order them from Fernandez because theirs are really clean and free of holes. Could always go over to the carncineria, but the quality of those is iffy as well.

On The Level
Went to Hannaford late this morning on the way back from docs. Seems to be more of the same. There's a lot of holes as well as stuff not being pulled forward on the shelf. So it looks a bit worse than it is. There are just a lot of missing items. How much, I don't know. Probably between like 3-6% of the store. It's also rather random. Like you may have wanted plain old standard pitted kalamata olives, but those are all gone, and the only thing left kalamata olives with pits.

I wanted string cheese. I like the whole milk version. Had to get part-skim mozzarella string cheese. Not a big deal, would have rather had whole milk string cheese because I like the taste and texture better.

Hamburger looks like it went up in price over the last week. What's odd is there was plenty of 85-90% ground beef. But little to no 80% packages. That's been going on a few weeks now.

My new favorite Barilla cheese or cheese & spinach stuffed shells are hit or miss. Got a couple bags last week and it seemed well stocked. Had look harder for them this weeks and what was left was in the back of the shelf.

It's been hit or miss with this chicken bone broth. Bought a few boxes last week when I found it was back on the shelf. None this week. Grabbed a standard chicken broth instead. What is the difference? The bone broth has 8 more grams of protein in it.

DH and the granddaughter made a Sam's run (College Station, TX) this morning and got everything on the list (and then some, of course!) When I grilled them both about how busy it was and if they saw any empty spaces they said they didn't see any holes and all categories seemed to be well-stocked. Plenty of TP, coffee, butter, meat, etc. There were other shoppers, but nothing like a throng.

Just finished a Costco run (Mid-eastern Mich.). Not busy. Well stocked generally. Low on canned fruits and fruit juices. Meat department was very well stocked.

Just for grins and giggles, I checked Amz for Keystone ground beef. At the moment it reads, "In stock soon". Price is $4.99 for the 14 oz can. I've NEVER seen it at this price. For those who don't have the equipment, knowledge, or courage to do home canning, this could be incredibly convenient. Yep! Just refreshed the page, and it's $4.99, down from $8.96.

Grocery Prices Could Rise 10-14% By October, Grocery Chain CEO Warns

THURSDAY, JUL 22, 2021 - 01:29 PM
Authored by Brad Polumbo via The Foundation for Economic Education,

American families are already struggling amid mounting price inflation that’s eating away at their budgets, with higher costs for housing, vehicles, and more. Yet a top CEO is warning that the growing inflation problem facing Americans could get much worse in the coming months.

The latest June data already show price inflation at a 13-year high, with prices having risen 5.4 percent year-over-year. Proponents of the big-government policies driving much of this increase insist the uptick in prices is only temporary.

But billionaire and grocery chain CEO John Catsimatidis just predicted that overall price inflation, for consumer goods generally, will hit a 6 percent annualized rate by October.

In an interview with Fox Business, the CEO warned that his industry is seeing skyrocketing costs on the supply chain side, and that businesses will have to raise prices for consumers as a result.

View: https://youtu.be/KlOQxsqO2gw
2:44 min

“Food prices are getting higher, and we expect even more increases by October,” Catsimatidis said.

“You have to pass [those extra costs] on [to consumers] or you’re not doing your duty to God, your country, your employees, and your company.”
While we can’t know for certain, Catsimatidis said rising costs could mean an astounding 10 to 14 percent specific increase in grocery prices by October. That’s truly a shocking amount. But this warning offers more than insight into the grocery industry. It’s a painful reminder of how price inflation hurts everyday Americans.

When we hear terms like “Consumer Price Index” or “expansionary monetary policy,” the conversation surrounding inflation quickly becomes inaccessible for many people, whose eyes understandably glaze over amid discussion of the abstract-seeming phenomenon. But at its core, price inflation is simply a question of our purchasing power being eroded. Because what really matters is not the number on our paychecks, it’s what that number can buy us.

So, Americans should react to a 6 percent rise in consumer prices just as vociferously as they would react to having their salary cut. It’s essentially the same thing.

And, as we’ve previously explained here at FEE, consumer price inflation can ultimately be traced back to the policy decisions made by the federal government. So, don’t let them off the hook when your grocery bills start to spiral upwards. Remember whose fault it really is.

Are you sure you are not comparing the price of the 14oz can to the larger 28oz can? According to Camel Camel Camel, Amazon has had the price of $4.99 for the 14oz since October 2017. The price I normally see for a 28oz can of ground beef is $6.98-$8.99.

Great deal with free shiping at $4.99! Raw ground beef (HEB Store brand) around here has gone up to 4.79 for 16oz of 85/15.

In Stock Soon: Sold by and from Amazon w/ FREE Delivery Aug 10 - 13 for Prime members. Limit 10!

Just returned from the weekly trip to Smith's (NE NV). Water bottles are in better supply and the Gatorade shelves are half-full now. There were a few holes in the canned veggies, but most everything else looked acceptable. Of course, there were no canning lids, but now the cases of canning jars are starting to sell. I can't help but wonder if it's because that's the only way people can get lids. Oh, and you still have to have exact change.

Pesto! It is even better made with walnuts instead of pine nuts, imho.

I am wondering if you are out of the Keystone shipping region.. Here in Oregon our Walmart does not carry Keystone so to have it shipped from back east is very expensive. I have been told that Walmart has distribution regions and not all products are sold for the same price per region.

Also was told by local Walm manager that if a WM is within a half a mile of a Costco the prices are lower. Found this out when servicing several within a 20 Mile radius one day
Yeah, I'm in Oregon & I'm seeing $35.69.

Interesting note about the Keystone Ground Beef 14oz (from & by Amazon -- not a 3rd party).

In Stock Soon: Sold by and from Amazon w/ FREE Delivery Aug 10 - 13 for Prime members. Limit 10!

I decided to order a set of 10 when I posted the above reply about 3 days ago and the estimated delivery date on the order matched the stated Aug 13. This morning I received an email from Amazon saying it should be delivered by Aug 2nd. When I checked the website to see about the delivery date if someone placed a new order and the estimated delivery date has shifted to September 19-20.

I thought this might be of interest to those here.

In Maconga today went to 2 different stores --Kroger and Food Depot--the milk sections in both stores were crap.
I want buttermilk--none at Kroger--they had almond milk, goat milk, fat free, whole milk, 1%, 2%, skim, soy milk and all kinds of other pretend milks --but NO buttermilk
I had to settle for fat free buttermilk (how can that be) at the Food Depot

I received the same email. I only have 4 cans ordered though. They must have sold all of it.

For the longest time, my favorite sushi/hibachi place had a $20.00 sushi lunch tray. I picked one up yesterday, and it's up to $22.00. I got it anyway, 'cause it's so-o-o-o GOOD!

Canning lid flats, limit 2, at my small town IGA yesterday. I got the last 2. The checkout kid (who I see a lot) said this was the first time they had received any for 12 months, and it was a surprise.

Also, The Do It Best hardware next door had lids and rings, and TATTLERS. Have never seen Tattlers in a store before.
