yup, within 35 miles- there's a map with the latest war zone article that may better answer distance and locations questions.

..this lil dust up is between Russia and a british vessel, and is apparently a pretty serious escalation and suggests Brits were serious about their new, more assertive defense posture

The Brits defensive posture?
The Brits were 3 miles inside Russian waters.
That is not defensive. It is offensive. Boats have been sunk for less.

Positions of Two NATO Ships Were Falsified Near Russian Black Sea Naval Base

By: H I Sutton

June 21, 2021 2:36 PM

USNI News Illustration

The tracking data of two NATO warships was faked off the coast of a Russian controlled naval base in the Black Sea while the actual ships were moored 180 miles away, USNI News has learned.

The U.K. Royal Navy’s HMS Defender, a Type-45 Daring-class destroyer, and the Royal Netherlands Navy’s HNLMS Evertsen, a De Zeven Provinciën-class frigate, pulled into Odessa in Ukraine on June 18. The group had been monitored by Russian warships while exercising in the Black Sea, according to U.S. Navy photos dated on June 17.

According to an automatic identification system (AIS) signal, which transmits position details to improve maritime safety, the pair left Odessa just before midnight on June 18. The data shows that they sailed directly to Sevastopol, approaching to within two nautical miles of the harbor entrance. The strategic port houses the headquarters of Russia’s Black Sea fleet.
Despite the AIS track, there is clear evidence that the two warships did not leave Odessa. Live webcam feeds show that they did not leave Odessa, however. This was anyway the known situation in defense circles, and local media. Anyone in Odessa can see that they did not leave. The webcams are broadcast live on YouTube by Odessa Online. Screenshots archived by third party weather sites like Windy.com show the two warships present in Odessa overnight.

Positioning two NATO warships at the entrance at the entrance of a major Russian naval base would be widely seen as a provocative action, based on conflicting claims of sovereignty . Most of the international community, including the U.S, Britain and the Netherlands, do not recognize Crimea as part of Russia.

While the motives for the deception are unclear, the move raises questions about the efficacy of open-source intelligence data, such as AIS, which is becoming more common in both defense and by journalists. There is compelling evidence that the AIS tracks were faked. NATO representatives did not immediately respond to requests for comment and the tracks were confirmed as false by Dutch naval warfare news site Marineschepen.nl.

The AIS positions were shared with AIS aggregator MarineTraffic.com by a receiver station in Chornomorsk, close to Odessa. Other AIS aggregators also reported the false positions. HMS Defender was shown under the credentials that she is currently using, IMO 4907878. HNLMS Evertsen was reported as “Netherlands Warship,” MMSI 244942000. It is unclear how the false AIS data was introduced to the feed.

Both Defender and Evertsen are part of CSG21, the carrier strike group centered around HMS Queen Elizabeth (R08). The main body of CSG21 has remained in the Mediterranean, while the two warships temporarily deployed to the Black Sea, where they have been performing freedom of navigation missions and exercising with allies. They have visited Turkey and Ukraine and will also exercise with Romania and Georgia. They have also met with the U.S. Navy’s Arleigh Burke-class destroyer USS Laboon (DDG-58).

I suspect some of this was a "test" because "Crimea" which Russia claims is there's (and effectively for all practical purposes it is) and the US/EU/UK that claim it is still part of Ukraine. It could just have been a navigation mistake but I suspect a "test" ....

Note the "The West considers this Ukrainian Territory" and Russia considers it Russian territory...next, what is the UK going to do about this if anything (or NATO for that matter)?

Russian forces fire warning shots at Royal Navy destroyer over Black Sea 'border violation'

Russian forces fired warning shots at a Royal Navy destroyer after it entered the country's territorial waters in the Black Sea, the Russian Defence Ministry has said.

A border patrol boat fired warning shots at HMS Defender and a Su-24M warplane dropped four bombs close to the ship, the ministry said.

"The destroyer was warned in advance that weapons would be fired in case of a violation of the Russian state border. It disregarded the warning," it said in a statement.

"As a result of joint actions of the Black Sea Fleet and the Border Service of the Russian Federal Security Service, HMS Defender left the territorial sea of the Russian Federation at 12.23pm."

The ministry said the confrontation took place near Cape Fiolent, a landmark on the coast of Crimea.

It claimed the ship had ventured approximately 3km into Russian waters.

Russia annexed the Crimean peninsula from Ukraine in 2014 in a move condemned by the West which still considers it Ukrainian territory.

But Sky News' foreign affairs editor Deborah Haynes said a defence source told her HMS Defender was actually in international waters and that a Russian ship was actually conducting a gunnery exercise and did not fire at the British ship.

"Even if the ship wasn't directly fired at, as these Russian defence ministry is claiming, the fact that these exercises were taking place so close to a transiting Royal Navy ship is clearly going to be seen from the UK side as a provocation," she said.

She said Russia would have been likely to see the presence of the British ship close to its waters as a provocation.

"It's a very tense situation between the two sides and I think we're waiting really to hear what the Ministry of Defence has to say, to give their version of events."

No warning shots have been fired at HMS Defender. The Royal Navy ship is conducting innocent passage through Ukrainian territorial waters in accordance with international law.

We believe the Russians were undertaking a gunnery exercise in the Black Sea and provided the maritime community with prior-warning of their activity. No shots were directed at HMS Defender and we do not recognise the claim that bombs were dropped in her path.

It may be to underscore Russias' "recommendation" that US not participate in the upcoming exercises in the black sea..

Imagine if Russian warships conducted war games in the Gulf of Mexico, say, 13 miles off the coast of Tampa-St. Petersburg or near New Orleans or Houston (neither of which are right on the coast). Then imagine that one of the Russian ships went inside our territorial waters, say ten miles from Tampa.

The US Military-Industrial Complex would have a hysterical field day with their lapdog press and we'd be on the verge of war.

The US and its allies do this sh*t on a regular basis and other countries are supposed to just compliantly roll over and say "More Sir, please."

As Dylan once said long ago, the times they are a changin'.

My data says the locations were faked. Warships didnt get that close at all.
"My data"?
That is precious. . . .

We, they, them, us . . . we all perform "freedom of navigation" in the air and sea "all the time"
for no other reason than to prove we can.
And when it is done, there is usually at least 2 navigators using two sources to ensure we are "on the imaginary dotted line" that mark the border. And those navigators are not second string for either side.

The only data that matters is the British Destroyer's and the data used by the Russian patrol ship and the fighter.

Shots were fired . . . there will be an investigation . . . the public will not likely know the outcome . . .

We have contested the Crimean election that Russia used to justify annexation of Crimea and so
I am not even a little surprised that the territorial waters around Crimea are being tested by our side.

A Russian military ship has fired warning shots at a British Royal Navy vessel in the Black Sea and a Russian jet dropped bombs in its path, Interfax cited Russia’s defence ministry as saying on Wednesday.

The ministry said HMS Defender left what it called Russian waters soon afterwards, having ventured as much as 3km (2 miles) inside. The incident took place near Cape Fiolent, the ministry, a landmark on the coast of Crimea.

Russia annexed the Crimean peninsula from Ukraine in 2014 in a move condemned by the west, which still considers it Ukrainian territory.

“The destroyer had been warned that weapons would be used if it trespasses the border of the Russian Federation. It did not react to the warning,” it said, adding that a Russian Su-24 bomber had dropped four high-explosive fragmentation bombs as a warning.

The British Ministry of Defence did not immediately respond to a request for comment.

Incidents involving aircraft or ships are not uncommon at Russia’s borders, especially during heightened tensions with the west, but rarely result in open fire.

The Royal Navy said earlier in June that the HMS Defender had “peeled away” from its strike group conducting Nato operations in the Mediterranean to carry out “her own set of missions” in the Black Sea.

Ukraine’s foreign minister, Dmytro Kuleba, said Russia’s firing of warning shots showed an aggressive and provocative policy that constituted a threat to Ukraine and its allies.

“A clear proof of Ukraine’s position: Russia’s aggressive and provocative actions in the Black and Azov seas, its occupation & militarisation of Crimea pose a lasting threat to Ukraine and allies,” he said on Twitter.

“We need a new quality of cooperation between Ukraine & Nato allies in the Black Sea.”

Reuters and Agence France-Presse contributed to this report. More details soon …

Actually Raven, there was some kind of incident involving apparent spoofing of locations a few days or so prior-
presumably however, Russia knew her location and that of her targets at the time they fired (or didn't, depending on which country you wish to believe) on the Defender
