Food Pop-Top Canned Food

Freeholder

This too shall pass.
I just wanted to give a warning -- we've discussed before whether or not the 'new' pop-top cans were suitable for food storage; I do not think they are. I've had several cans open with a POP -- a release of pressure -- lately. They were not damaged, showed no swelling, had no rust or holes in them, and in most cases were new or fairly new. I just opened a can of soup that I had purchased only a few days ago which did this. None of them have been exposed to temperature extremes. I am not positive that we would get sick from just heating the soup up before eating, but to be safe, I'm thoroughly cooking it.

If possible, get the old-fashioned cans for your long-term food storage.

I prefer not to get that kind, but sometimes there is no other option. And I agree they do not last as long. As far as i can tell all the inexpensive cans of walmart food has the pop top. I've opted to pay a little more for a solid top can. Although I've never had a can like that go bad.

Note for those making donations to emergency, natural disaster victims or shelters. Pop tops don't require can openers and grab and go donation bags clean up crews and secondary responders hand out? They work well.

Like you, Judy, I pay more for the non pop top cans. The only pop top cans I've had to go bad were fairly new cans of Spam, and they all have pop top lids. Sometimes, you don't have an option, though, like my cans of Campbell's Cheddar Cheese Soup. I can't seem to find that in any other brand.

the question of the pop-tops won't be around that long >>> price of metal is really pushing the poly pack - expect there to be more "peg" sections in your canned food aisle soon ....

Those don't stay good very long at all. I rotate out my packets of chicken and tuna pretty frequently. I only use them for slim packing like in bags.
