13 year old Shitzu girl it seem like sudden but online vet call said it could have been happening and it just reach the point that it total deafness now. Not ready to hear is just her age. She is on meds for hip pain and allergies and what the vet calls "old dog warts". I also have her on probiotics and mushroom capsules.

Start teaching hand signals. It’s important she looks at you for commands. I had a dog go deaf and a dog trainer told me to hold a treat in my hand and not give it to her until she makes eye contact. She eventually started watching me more and it was easier to give her commands.

A high fever can also make a dog deaf. I second the hand signals. Give her lots of love and assurance.

Astor had a problem in one ear as he passed 15 years old; his left ear was prone to infections. The vet can prescribe antibiotics to help. Taking a wash cloth and swabbing the ear as best you can might help too. I usually dipped one in hydrogen peroxide to wipe his ears out.

But a ShiTzu, even deaf, will still walk around with their tail thrown back over their butt and strut like they own the place. Give your beautiful dog a hug and a kiss from me and the missus.

Saw a ShiTzu colored like our Astor at a client's home today. Had to hold back tears when I petted her.

CLARO is the best thing I've found for chronic ear problems.

Our old Black & Tan/Otterhound went deaf at about twelve or so. I guess he was so used to how things went that it was never an issue. As he got older, every so often you'd really surprise him when he be hard asleep. I think he looked more indignant that he felt you'd snuck up on him than anything else.

Thank you Millwright.....my old dog is losing his hearing.....still has some, but it's not what it should be. I'm going to try this. Thanks again!

It's for known issues, bacterial, fungus and (something else...mites?).

It may not help old-age hearing loss...or I'd try it.

25bux per ear-per squirt.

Does your pup display any ear discomfort?

I'd have a vet confirm.

What kind of floor do you have. You can teach a deaf dog to respond to hand signals but you need to get their attention first. A foot tap on a hollow floor will be felt-you need to start the hand signals immediately. My dogs are trained from day one-more of a security issue but they will respond if they ever go deaf as it is trained into them.

Also look at meds she’s taking. Make sure there is not some weird side effects.

Looked up one one of our girls was taking and was like “noooo!” Had it changed.

However, I hope it’s just a fungus or something. My shih tzu went somewhat deaf in her old age, but not completely. But if you look in their ears, they are probably a breed that REALLY needs the fur pulled out from time to time. Definitely some drops to clean at least monthly. I have never HEARD of pulling the hairs from their ears but I do know it’s a thing with schnauzers. I never did it because well, I just figured it would not be pleasant and never had problems. I don’t know what the deal was, I didn’t get that far. Lol

Hope they find a cause - I also would try to get a culture done. I see so much blown off as “old age” when it really isn’t.

But they’re smart (stubborn) dogs and you can easily train if you have to.

My Black Lab had ear infections and the Vet prescribed EpiOtic. I'd use that and Qtips and clean his ears. It's just a simple ear wash, but it works.

AM, I know you miss your boy. Had you thought that perhaps he put you in the path to see a pup that would remind you of him? It brought emotion, which is your link to Astor that will never leave you. As long as you continue to include him in your life, he will not feel so alone. Love is the Bridge to Home.

That was my first thought, too, but, no, it's a lady doggie :: scratches head ::

No tips to share, but I do have hugs and prayers for you and your four footed family. Let us know how things are progressing...

My dog is almost 14 and going deaf. She can still hear handclaps and was trained as a puppy to respond to hand signals. Sounds impressive but nowadays she pretty much responds when she wants to.

It wouldn't surprise me in the least that he put me in the path of a ShiTzu that reminded me of him. His ashes are on the bookshelf across from the chair he and I spent thousands of hours sitting in. Me on the top him on the foot. His collar is there, along with 2 of his favorite toys. I look up and I am reminded of him. Him at the bottom of the recliner, sideways, stretching out so he'd have more chair space. Always slept and watched TV with his head on my leg. Love is the bridge, for sure.
I miss him pushing the blinds back on the patio door because he heard me pull up. He'd bark, I'd come in, put my work stuff down and grab his leash. He was always the first order of business when I came home from work. I miss him, the missus misses him terribly. But his memories always give you a smile or a laugh.

AlfaMan....did you give up looking for a dog? I hope not!

No, haven't given up. But I'm not paying the stupid prices ShiTzu breeders want for puppies either. Anywhere from $ 895 to $4000 . No wonder they're high theft dogs in urban areas.

WHAT!! Dear Heaven. I know it costs money to breed a dog correctly and take care of shots and all that but that’s robbery.

When it’s time you’ll find that special baby.

Our dogs have all been trained to hand signals as well as verbal commands. It helped when our old Brittany went deaf.
