CHAT No hoarding ... media

Has No Life - Lives on TB
So the last two nights they’ve been playing on the news begging people not to hoard. Not needed, there’s enough to go around if people stop hoarding. Only buy enough food for a week ... maybe 2 at most. Only take what is needed. This is in SE MI on local news stations.

Talking about all stores will start limiting purchases ( even more). 8 months ago they were telling you to get food for a month. The same time they kept flip flopping on wearing masks.

Folks, they’re doing everything they can to trip us up. Make us dependent on them for survival. We all know Butthead and Cackles are going to lock us up as well as local governors already dropping the hammer again.

Hope your well prep already. It’s not just Thanksgiving. I see people lined up outside Costco everyday for the last 2 weeks.

If you were dumb enough to not learn the lesson of the last lockdown about making sure you have at the least, several weeks of food and supplies put up, then you deserve to starve this time around.

For many, many years, it has been "Use one, buy two to replace" as a regular course of shopping. I have plenty put away, but this year did that double time. I am nowhere near as prepped as many of you, especially when it comes to knowledge, but I am getting there. I've always been the looney in the family, but this past year, they aren't calling me looney anymore. Now they ask me, what's coming next. To most of them, I play stupid now. - <shrugs> "I dunno". For the immediate family that I know "get it", I helped them plan what they needed to get each week and start their preps.

Struggling with paper towel again. We only buy Costco as the rest is way to much. They’ve been out the last three weeks we’ve gone their.

My food preps are good.

Yeah, we're the same way. I wanted way more stock of paper towels than I have, and can't find any, but I have plenty of fabric to make towels to wash and planned accordingly for the "eventuality" that toilet paper I do have is finite, and in extreme circumstances, will eventually run out. Cloth wipe system as a backup, and also sewed a number of cloth pads for women, even though I had a hysterectomy last year and do not need them, I figure someone else in my family might.

if you shop Costco’s they’ve cheap cloth wash towels ... like 24 to a pack. Like 12 bucks or so. We’ve bought couple packs of those to use as paper towel if needed

I hear you on the paper towels, and I share your pain. Costco is out of paper towels here too, at least wrt to ordering for delivery (I haven't been there in the flesh since last Jan/Feb). I tried to game the system with Instacart (it actually let me order 1 pack of the Kirkland paper towels), but when the items were delivered, no paper towels. The Instacart guy told me that they are there first thing in the morning, but then shortly sell out. (No, I'm not about to go there myself; we're trying to limit our exposure.)

I'm still able to get TP online, so I guess I should get another couple multipacks. Can't have too much of that.

But I really wish I was able to get more of the Kirkland paper towels. I have backups in the form of pop-up boxes of paper towels and then some C? fold flat paper towels, but I prefer rolls.

Honestly, I'm glad I prepped. I've been going through some kind of wicked chest cold for the last few days. But I had plenty stocked up so my need to go out was minimal.

Also, special call-out to Aintitfunny; she pointed out that pineapple is a decongestant. I must have eaten half a dozen cans of pineapple in the last three days, and between that and hot tea--and the help of God Almighty, of course--deep pantrying cut my healing time probably in half.

I stopped using paper towell and ziplock bags years ago during the last resession. Washable towels and tupperware type containers i have in abundance. I keep one pt roll to cleanup hamburger grease and it will last months.
Wow!! That’s incredible! Good for you! :)
Unfortunately, we can’t go without paper towels with 5 indoor cats and a dog and 2 humans. Always cleaning up after each other...and the animals as well.
Plus, we fix bacon in the microwave almost every other day for a snack eating on during the mornings and I have to have 4 for the bottom on the plate and 1 to cover.
I buy great value select a size 2 pack thick rolls. We have limited space here so my husband made upper shelves around the top of our tiny laundry room and we can “file them” on the shelf. We can hold 8 of those 2 packs plus I can hold another 4 of the packs under the sink.
For the laundry room itself, I’m always wipIng out my washer and dryer after every use, (excess cat hair), so I use the cheap $1 dollar tree paper towels for those. I can have a maximum of 5 rolls in there.
If I had more room, I’d have at least 50 rolls.

Around house I use rags and wash em instead of using paper towels. Now if sick or something I like paper towels a whole lot. Keep a roll in the car for that reason along with first aid stuff. Depending on what got used I consider it fine to consider it all used up even if not all used up.

I have learned I stock a year of toilet paper in the cubby hole I use for toilet paper. I got alternatives if I feel the need but have not felt like changing.

Yep, we stopped using paper towels years ago also; just use kitchen towels, washcloths, or rags, depending on the mess. We do keep one roll under the sink for cat puke, but if we totally ran out I'd just have to get less prissy about it...LOL! However, we got a lot of them between the last shortage and this one, not only "just in case", but I use them to make alcohol wipes because we need them at work. Cheaper than store bought, and no worrying if they're out.

We were fine on TP back in March, even had enough to give DD a big pack, but have restocked what we used. Also have plenty of washcloths if need be.

*I* stopped buying ziplocks, though dh can't give them up...LOL! We have a lot of Pyrex bowls with lids, and canning jars, for storing leftovers.

I would love it if I didn't have any consumables to replace!

Edit to add some info. On the bacon grease I suspect a light cloth will do the same on top of the bacon. Think bed sheet material. For underneath I would use a container to catch the bacon grease. I use bacon grease for cooking and if I ever feel like I got too much I might dribble some on the dog food. For the holidays when I eat really good the cat and dogs also eat good.

I am not against papertowels but there are options out there. I would consider learning how those options work for the day that comes when you can't buy what you want due to either major price increase or it is not there.

Same goes for wiping out washer and dryer. You can wipe em out with a rag and shake out the rag outside. Use a lint roller, I use packing tape for lint roller, to gother up cat and dog hair.

I am not against paper towels as I said. But consider what it is doing and options for that.

Last time, while i was in the hospital, my BIG upright freezer died and the kids discovered it too late to save anything. I couldnt buy a replacement and only this week was able to buy a small, 8.8 cu ft chest freezer so i’m hopping to get a hold of some of what i had before.
BY THE WAY, IT IS NOT “ILLEGAL HOARDING” IF IT IS HOME CANNED! ,
REMEMBER THAT!

Put everything in Mayonnaise/ pickle/ instant coffee/mason or other jars Or ziplock bags!¥
Coffee, Sugar, salt, Rice, macaroni, corn meal, oats, shortening, farina, repackage it.
THEY ONLY SEIZE FOOD THAT IS UNOPENED, IN ORIGINAL PACKAGING, FOR REDISTRIBUTION To others!
LISTEN TO GRANNY!

BTW-Home canned food is likewise NOT COUNTED as “wealth or assets“ either, IN A BANKRUPTCY!

Well, I screwed that mess up. So another post. :D I use towels around the house other than things like when I am sick or animal is sick.

I keep roll of paper towels in van along with basic first aid kit, want to be able to throw that stuff out.

I do like ziplocks but recently upgraded my rubbermaid stuff so I will use them more than ziplocks.

Please try alternatives so you can see what works or does not work. For the top of bacon fabric I honestly admit I am not sure how well it will wash out cause grease in drains will tend to plug the drains.

Lot of ideas on pinterest and all over the net, do consider the idea before using cause some are downright stupid.

Save everything, empty jars and their lids, use cloth for most jobs, easier to wash than buy paper, have lots of sponges for wiping all, even bums, also LOTS of clorox for cleaning said cloths. Lots of clothespins and some line. Kirk's Castile soap dries very well, lasts a loong time when dried. The very moist soaps won't dry. Don't tell ANYBODY ANYTHING. They WILL rat you out for ??? Any damn reason. Use your head not your feels. Do have some cat/dog food bags around. Those? We're gonna eat that when everything else runs out.
It's gonna suck, big-time. Hope we all get thru it.

You WILL be in trouble very soon, if TSHTF.
All that wiping with a non renewable resource? You'll be lucky if you can afford the juice or gas for the dryer. Clothes dry just fine all by themselves. Either use a clothesline or draped on the furniture. I've never had to wipe my washer free of cat hair, I have 2 of them. Don't have a dryer.
That bacon gonna go away sooner or later. Whatcha gonna do then?

i did not learn to cook bacon properly until my elderly mother came to live with us.
my bacon was always more tooth breaking hard than crispy, She said HOW DID YOU COOK THIS?
My mom said “bacon has to go on a cookie sheet in a 325 (not hot) oven till done.”
Cooked that way, Wow! it melted in our mouth!

Haven't had a dryer in 14 years. Clothesline and kitchen by coal stove.

So I went to bathroom while DH was waiting on cath in hospital yesterday. I walk back in his room and there he is bragging to the staff about all the food and supplies and guns and ammo we have stored. No, he wasn't medicated yet.

Also, there seems to be NO flu at the hospital, but patients are full up of Covid, and Bacterial Pneumonia.

I think they’re saying all this to start a new run of panic buying. It’s probably not happening fast bough for them. I popped into Meijer yesterday for some last minute items for my Thanksgiving dinner, and they had weird “limit 2 only” signs on so many things. Weird things that made no sense to have limits on, like lactose free milk and Triscuits and cereal, even though stock seemed plentiful. It was bizarre. I saw those signs several times in every aisle. So what’s the point?? Some kind of psy ops thing?? Or they legitimately only want people buying no more than two containers of Fairlife milk?

That's when you smile and nod and give a slight wink as if the cognitive issues are showing. I would have even talked quietly to whomever he had spoke to as to downplay what he said.

Oh yeah tell the masses not to hoard this time around. ;) Smart real smart of them to do this so just sit there and watch as the stores get striped clean in the next two or three days, thats if they don't do a full lock down today just to keep you from having anything.

Yes'm! It's also a lot easier to 'harvest' the precious bacon grease this way... just tilt the sheet pan and drain into a jar. I tend to cook up a whole package and store the extras in a container in the fridge. Just warm on 50% for 15 seconds or so in the microwave.
