For the first time this year we went shopping in the closest large city (10,000 population). Wife had an eye doctor appointment there.
I bought new winter hunting boots also a spare pair of hiking boots.
Went to Walmart but bought very little there.
Wife got a hair cut as long as we were in the city.
Bought some more ammo.

Don't ya hate it when you buy bras without being able to try them on? Bought two new sports bras, and decided to try one on, yesterday. The dang thing is so tight I couldn't get it over my head and shoulders!!! Sam's won't do exchanges on underwear, either. The sizes were all in S, M, L, XL. Given my size, I bought Mediums. Should have got XL!. Money wasted, but I won't do that again! In a normal bra size, I wear a 34C. That size is hard to find.

I bought some of those bras from Sam’s too, same problem for me. I gave them to my youngest daughter so at least she’ll get some use out of them. I’m still looking for a place to buy some that actually fit like they should.

It's good to know that I'm not the only one! Thing is, I don't have anyone to give them to, so my money was wasted. And yes, I'm still looking for a place to buy bras that I know will fit. If I wear one at all, it's only a sports bra. I need new ones badly.

My half hog is ready!

It’s 86$ To the processor for my half... I paid my cousin 125$ for her fee.
Is that good?
I think its a decent price for your cousin, its expensive to feed out pigs. 86 dollars for half a hog to be processed around here would be high, we pay around that for a whole hog, but we just get ours ground, plus our processor doesn't do much else except steaks. No bacon or hams or pork chops.

If you get smoked meat in that fee, it's a steal. But even without, $250 for a finished hog (for the farmer) really doesn't even cover their feed. Weaned piglets were going for $75 here this spring... I don't know how anyone us making anything on raising them.

Summerthyme
We raised them for almost 5 years and lost a lot of money. But DH wanted them and he paid for them but the time came to get out of the pig business. We ended up giving away 2 sows and 18 babies (they each had 9) that the wild boars kept getting them pregnant. The little ones kept getting out of the pig yard and DH got tired of dealing with them, plus he was tired of paying so much money for feed.

No one around here wants to feed out a pig, nor do they want to pay for one that is fed out. Too many wild hogs.

Pig farming has always been a huge industry here in our neck of the woods. Heck, pork is what most Southerners were raised on. Myself, included. There was once a huge pig farm right down the road from me, about 1/4 mile. Went out of business like most others have. Too many wild hogs in the area, and we can shoot them on site. Pork is still very cheap at most grocery stores in the area, too.

The big hog operations can (somehow) survive on $5 or $10 profit per hog. But you have to have thousands of them to do that (and I wonder if they're really taking into account all their expenses, depreciation and labor value!)

My son raises 6-8 pastured pigs a year. He gets $4 a pound, straight across, out of the freezer... I think he might make a hundred bucks each. But he has to limit people who want to buy just bacon, and then they go to Wal-Mart for cheap pork loins! COVID really did help his business... he sold out of all last year's pork by the end of March. But if things go back to normal, sure as anythung, people will go back to grabbing a package of pork chops at WalMart rather than driving 4 miles to his little farm... "convenience", ya know! Even though they all sgree there is no comparison in flavor...

You're right, Summerthyme. The pork in grocery stores tastes different from the pork I was raised on. Home grown and butchered. I loved those warm cracklin's, and my grandmother's cracklin cornbread I can still taste.

This order has all of the that.

Cousin called the order in based on what she normally gets , the only change I made was to the chops; I asked for 1/2” thick.
1/4 “ is too skimpy in my book.

Well, this is a new experience for me and I’m sure it’s going to be so good!!

She only fed them hog food (whatever that is lol!) amd veggies, especially fruits...she’s raised hogs her entire life having inherited my grandpas business (her dad) who had , at one time back in the day, the largest hog operation in Indiana.

She’s also raised beef but said she’s out of that due to cost and effort at this time in her life. She and her daughter raised one, last steer and he took grand champion at some contest thing in southern Indiana.
The hog processor is Cannelsburg Meat Processing , southern Indiana. Does anyone know them?

Cousin said they’re stellar, and known for clean, fair, individualized attention and a good product.

Last night I put the fajita seasoned chicken in the dehydrator and its dry as a bone. I had some veggi soup mix that would not cook tender. I dumped it in a pot and boiled the heck out of it for a while. Put it in the dehydrator and its all dried up. I call both things a success, they will be vacuumed sealed in just a few. I think the soup blend will be good adding some to just about any soup. It has lentils, split yellow peas and tiny pasta in it.

I've had some energy the last couple of days and am getting more done. In the last few days I've dehydrated enough goods to fill three cases of canning jars.

I'm at a stand still on my vacuum sealing foods into canning jars. I'm waiting on more O2 absorbers to arrive. I still have boxes of scalloped potatoes and hamburger helper to do, along with a few boxes of mac and cheese and yellow rice.

I generally use my food saver to vacuum seal my jars, but now that I'm thinking about it the o2s might be a better idea in that you can open the jar take out some product and put the o2 right back in. Of course you can also reseal with the food saver (I have a back up brake bleader, first one I bought stopped working and later I ordered another)

I vac sealed some more beans today. I also did a 5 lb bag of flour, after putting in the freezer for about 5 hours. That flour really compacts down.

I don't have one of those Food Saver jar sealers. The O2 absorbers are working fine for what I'm using it for. I'm not doing a lot of jars right now. If using them continues to work well, I will do lots more later on. Like I said, I'm waiting on more absorbers to finish off a few more boxes. This is more of an experiment to see how well it works. I'll have to wait awhile to see how well the seal holds up. I don't want to waste a lot of food if the jars don't stay sealed. So far, so good, but it's only been a week, since my first jar.

One thing I didn’t mention was that I did not open the flour bag. I just put the entire bag into the freezer and then the entire package went into food saver bags. No flour leaked out, just compacted.

I keep all of my flour and cornmeal in one of my chest freezers. I pour it into a gallon freezer storage bag. That's the only way I feel safe with storing it. I know that you can can it, but I haven't tried it, yet.

This is my back up to the food saver and o2s:

There are many youtube videos about this. No electricity needed. They can be hard to use, but better than nothing.

Perhaps you could donate to a women’s shelter. Than it wouldn’t d m like money wasted (as much) and could be a blessing for someone else.

I bought two. I tried one on, and the other one is still in the package unopened. Every spring and fall I go through mine and Cary's closets. I gather up the clothes that we don't want anymore for whatever reason. Clothes that are still too good to throw away. So, twice a year we donate them to the Salvation Army. I've got a bag of clothes started that will be donated soon. I'm gonna put both bras in there. For years, we have donated to the Salvation Army any chance we have.
