Beto O’Rourke: Texas GOP a 'Death Cult' -- They Want 'Latinos and African-Americans' to 'Do the Dying'

Tuesday on MSNBC, former Rep. Beto O’Rourke (D-TX) called the Texas GOP a “death cult” who wants “African-Americans” and “Latinos” to do the dying.

O’Rourke said, “You know, the United States has been hit hard by COVID. Texas, arguably, harder than almost any other state right now, perhaps with the exception of Florida and Arizona, and within Texas, the Rio Grande Valley, and particularly Hidalgo County, is just getting the stuffing knocked out of it. They’re running out of beds and space in their hospitals and clinics. They’re running out of nurses and doctors to take care of the patients. It’s so bad that some ambulances are waiting up to ten hours in order to discharge the patients that they picked up because there is no bed there to receive them. There’s no longer space in the morgues, in the funeral homes, so they’re stacking the bodies in refrigerated trucks right there. And as you pointed out, our Governor, Greg Abbott, inexplicably, will not only not issue a stay-at-home order for the state of Texas, he will not allow the county judge there, Richard Cortez, to issue one for Hidalgo County to save the lives of the people that he was sworn to serve and to represent. And I want to make sure this is not lost on your viewers, that county is 95% Mexican-American.”

He continued, “We know that Latinos and African-Americans are disproportionately bearing the burden of COVID transmission that is out of control in the state of Texas. This governor, our governor, Greg Abbott, is choosing to allow people to die when he could choose to allow county judges to save their lives.”

O’Rourke added, “This is one of the most craven, callous failures of leadership that I’ve ever witnessed in my life. We don’t have a Governor Cuomo here, which we desperately need. Someone who’s going to be guided by the facts and the science and the truth, and whose sole mission is going to be saving the lives of those that he is elected to serve. Instead, we have a governor who perhaps is looking at the 2022 Republican primary for the office that he now holds, trying to fend off our lieutenant governor, Dan Patrick, who on Fox News said there are more important things than living. In other words, let’s get on with the dying, knowing full well that it will be those frontline workers making $7.25 an hour, which is the minimum wage in Texas. It will be African-Americans, it will be Latinos and Mexican-Americans who will be doing the dying right here in Texas. This is a death cult, the Texas GOP. Only they want you to do the dying, and that is exactly what’s happening in Texas right now.”

Oh Lord help me, there goes the nun in the back of my head again. I can't see that man's name without hearing a stereotypical Irish nun screaming in the background.

If you have to have an order to stay home maybe this is Darwin in action. Our Governor Kim Reynolds just used her Mom voice and told us to stay home. No legal order. Just do what you know you need to do.

Talk is cheap
Did he have a hard time not busting out laughing, like when he was in front of the cameras "so sad" about that shooting in El Paso?

I think he is quoting a social media post that was debunked last week. Shut up, Beto! Sheesh, I get tired of saying that!

Iowa Gov. Kim Reynolds Caves to Black Lives Matter, Grants Felons Voting Rights

August 5, 2020

Iowa Gov. Kim Reynolds (R) caved to Black Lives Matter and signed an executive order on Wednesday granting voting rights to those who have served their felony sentences.

“When someone serves their sentence and pays the price our justice system has set for their crime, they should have their right to vote restored automatically, plain and simple,” Reynolds said during a press conference on Wednesday.

Reynolds said her executive order would restore the “voting rights of some felons.” She added that her order requires Iowans to complete their sentences, and they will still require those who committed felony homicide offenses to apply for voting rights restoration individually.

“This is a cause on which so many Iowans have worked on,” she added.

The order will allow thousands of Iowans to vote in the upcoming November elections, which has significant implications for the reelection of President Donald Trump, Sen. Joni Ernst’s (R-IA) reelection, and the swing congressional districts in the state.

The Des Moines Register wrote that Reynolds had resisted calls to sign an executive order granting voting rights to felons.

However, Reynolds reportedly promised to sign an executive order in June after meeting with activists from the Des Moines, Iowa, Black Lives Matter, the NAACP, and the American Civil Liberties Union (ACLU).

Since that meeting, Black Lives Matter lobbied Reynolds to sign an executive order and allow potential felons to vote less than 90 days ahead of the 2020 elections.

Reynolds has called for a constitutional amendment to automatically restore voting rights to felons once they have completed their sentences; however, the majority Republican state Senate blocked her constitutional amendment. Passing an amendment would enshrine the voting rights policy in the state constitution.

Previous governors have taken opposing views on restoring voting rights. Gov. Tom Vilsack (D) signed an executive order restoring felon voting rights in 2005, but Reynolds, predecessor, Gov. Terry Brandstad (R), scrapped the Democrat executive shortly after taking office in 2011.

Aaron Klein, formerly a Breitbart News senior investigative reporter, wrote in 2019 that progressive organizations, financed by George Soros, have worked “overtime” to restore voting rights in many battleground states such as Florida.

Reynolds called her executive order a temporary solution and reiterated her call for a “permanent solution” by passing a constitutional amendment.

“Let me be clear: an executive order is, at best, a temporary solution. It can be changed with a stroke of a pen by the next governor, which is not good enough,” the Iowa Republican said. “Something that is fundamentally right should not be based on benevolence of a single elected official.”

This is not legal. Granting voting rights requires legislation, not a dictator’s edict. Why even HAVE legislatures in the states, when these fascists just sign edicts and declare they must be followed? Where are the lawsuits?

Governor Reynolds order is sort of temporary. The legislature needs to weigh in. It will take a constitutional amendment I do believe.

Iowa is one of the very few states if not the only one where felons never are able to be fully restored. Some felonies are not covered.

Under English Common Law felony was a class of serious egregious offenses. Look at our laws today. Most offenses are felonies not hardly any misdemeanors anymore. Martha Stewart is a felon because she answered incorrectly while not under oath. She should never ever have the right to vote?

Personally forgiveness and restoration after time served for most offenses seems correct to me.

Things that would deserve the death penalty should not included. Child sex slavery, premeditated murder, kidnapping; these can stay locked up. This thinking is where we are in Iowa.

IIRC, she was persecuted (as opposed to simply prosecuted) because she dared to tell the investigators to basically f’off. You don’t insult the feds and walk away.
