CHAT Update on found pup

DEPLORABLE ME
It's been 5 days since we came home with found pup.

We found her Saturday.
Sunday and Monday I looked online at all the lost dog ads.
Tuesday we went to the vet for a check for microchip. (None)
Wednesday still no lost dog ad for her.
Today I put a found ad online with picture at a couple of the biggest lost and found websites.

It looks like she might be here to stay. If she stays, that is. So far we've kept her on a leash when outside, which isn't easy as she's not leash trained and weighs 68 lbs. She bounds off full tilt, hits the end of the leash and wham! It's all you can do to stay upright. Off the leash, she takes off and runs helter skelter, like she's never been out of a back yard, and I'm pretty sure she'd disappear if we couldnt catch her, which is why she's on a leash for now.

My dogs out here have been loose their whole lives from the time they are puppies, so while they go exploring, they are also used to coming home. Nearest neighbors are 2 miles away, and 5 miles away. Cows and coyotes are closer.

Needless to say, DH gets most of the leash duty, I can't afford to break one of my hip replacements, lol. I have been trying to train her to the leash better, because DH has no concept of how to train...he can't do "consistant".

We started calling her Coco, because she was in the Coconino National Forest when we found her.

I could not believe it when she weighed 68 lbs at the vet!!! She looks so skinny and light weight.

We have an appointment next Thursday for a complete health checkup at the vet.

The "new dog" thing has worn off and other than some minor growling the other dogs don't care. She hasn't yet been loose to just play with them.

It's seems like the only thing she knows is "sit". Which is better than nothing, lol.

That's all for now!

This too shall pass.
‘Sit’ is one of the few commands my LGD’s learn, so I can give them their food without having them jump all over and spill it.

Sounds like you have a new buddy! Did the vet have any guess as to how old she is?

Glad you got her checked for a chip.

Yeah...she's probably a runner....that's why she was loose and lost. Agree that leash is not an answer where you are....way out and wanting loose dogs. Also keeping in mind that she will put on another 30 lbs before she fills out that frame. Shock collar is probably the route, if you want to go to the work of training/rehabbing her.

She'll learn! She's in "high clover" right now and enjoying every bit of it. I suspect that once she gets than hang of things, she's not going to let you out of her sight. She knows a good thing when it comes along. I'm happy for all of you...you, husband, new pup and other dogs!

Coco is here to stay!
Tomorrow it'll be 3 weeks since we found her, and after the first week we let her play outside with the other dogs off leash, etc. She goes out in the morning and runs flat out like crazy, and gets the other dogs to play! She goes with us to the barn to feed the critters, comes back and when it gets hot she spends the day inside with us. She goes out at night, too, but we make sure she's inside when we go to bed.

She's been very good, and I think we're all bonded pretty well. We really have been enjoying her.
She passed her vet check with no problems, not even any worms! She got her shots and a rabies tag...

She shows no sign of wandering so far, even when she's out a while she's never very far. We have about 8 of 40 acres fenced, and it seems to be enough for her.

She probably weighs about 80 pounds now, but her legs are so long she doesn't look that big.

She looks a million times better. Well done!

Did the vet say anything about taking those back dew claws off?

We cannot walk our four legged baby without a harness attached to his leash. He would pull my arm out of the socket lol Adjustable-Nylon-No-Pull-Dog-Harness-Vest-For-Big-Dog-Harness-Large-Dog-Leash-XL-Medium.jpg

I bet she will be a good inside dog, short hair and big enough to probably sound like a even bigger dog.

If you want to get rid of her, PM me. :D good looking mutt to.

At the tender age of six months, Mr. Boo (Catahoula) literally dragged me to the Idaho line. I learned what a pinch collar was from a friend and thought it looked like a torture device. I was dead set against one. She taught me how to add and remove links and put it as close up behind the pups ears as possible. When needed, just gently lift up. Mr. Boo was walking at Heel with me within five minutes. Amazing device. At the time, mine was $16 at Tractor Supply.

Your girl favors him. I am so happy for you both. There is a lot of ugly out there but this thread made my day!

I would use a prong collar until you get her accustomed to the leash. You don't have to be mean with it and it is very effective.

Yes, they look horrible but don't hurt the dog at all. Ours couldn't wait to get it on. We purchased the Herm Sprenger prong collar off Amazon and it was like night and day in the dog's wild behavior. Now, he walks just fine and we no longer need to use it. One bit of advice though, I have a hard time squeezing those links to open and close the collar so we got the one with the latch. Maybe it was just a faulty collar, but we had to stop using it and go back to the original as it would suddenly fall open right out of the blue! We always had the collar clipped to his regular collar, just as a secondary measure. A good thing as he would have got loose in the middle of town traffic. So if you buy one get the regular one.

They banned pinch collars over here, so we had to order from the US, but when we had Norwegian Elkhounds they were the only thing that worked.

Not only are they bred for independence on the hunt but they have extremely thick neck fur, and after the male almost (in all seriousness) nearly broke his neck on the choke chain (he couldn't feel it - Nightwolf was terrified for a moment we'd lost him) we got the pinch collars which they could just barely feel.

It worked, and we still have them somewhere, none of our other dogs (including two Wolf crosses) have needed them but Princess the White Alpha Wolf needed a halti and harness like the red one shown above for control.
