BRKG Massive Explosion in Beirut

And the garbage truck blows up down the road leaving your house because something accidentally spilled on the "soda" you had thrown away per the FD's instructions. That advice I don't think I would follow if I was you. SMH!

Not that you would get rid of it, it's just unreal they gave you THAT advice. But make certain batteries and paint are disposed of properly. SMH again!

We would miss you greatly here if you were sitting in prison! Lol!

agreed. I couldn't believe it.

I guess I'll go on keeping it in the barn, and gradually using it up in the garden.....

Ammonium nitrate is not really that brisant, it’s a relative slow acting explosive. In other words it does not create or develop a high velocity shattering force such as RDX or C-4 would. Much like comparing a black powder muzzle-loader to a modern day rifle with the higher pressure smokeless powders.

For there to be building damage miles away it would have to be something a bit more brisant than plain ol ANitrate.

In case anyone else didn’t know...

“Description
Brisance is the shattering capability of a high explosive, determined mainly by its detonation pressure. The term can be traced from the French verb "briser" ultimately derived from the Celtic word "brissim". Wikipedia

The guys in the boat, who took the video from across the water did. But when I watched it later, it cut off before they spoke. But. Their voices sounded shocked, not celebratory. Like some here would say “Oh my ...!” Just my opinion.

ETA: there are at least two videos from the water. So, I should correct the above statement. The video wasn’t altered. My bad!
Good Muslims who believe they are about to die also is supposed to say "God is Great" - when they examine the boxes of airline crashes known to be accidents for piolet's last works - with Europeans/Americans it is almost always "Oh..F" or "Oh..S"

With Muslims it is almost always Allah Akbar or variations - this isn't only used by terrorists.

Many good Hindus will try to invoke the name of Rama said over and over again just as many Christians or Catholics will say "Holy Mother of God" or "Jesus!"

I am still reading the thread but I suspect there may be more than one "cause" of this - so yes, someone in the know can honestly say it was the chemical storage (same stuff as the Oklahoma City Bombing) but I suspect they are omitting the "help" used to get it to explode.

I think one of the main observations I am taking from this horrific and vile situation is that IF/When another nuclear bomb hits a major urban area the folks on the ground won't be able to just "duck and cover."

Some may have time to do that, but afterward many will be forced to walk the contaminated streets and breath in the falling dust because they will have no idea what just happened, we not at home when happened, are probably at least lightly injured and may have no idea where they are.

This last one will because all the usual landmarks, signs, obvious streets, and buildings will be partly collapsed and in "bits."

Until I saw this, I'm not sure I even processed just how disorienting and confusing everything would be, by the time most people realized they had been "nuked" a lot of them will already have been exposed enough to be very ill or die within the next few weeks.

I've read Shane, I know there are things you can do, but people who were at work or at a cafe miles from home or who live in a high rise apartment where the front of the building just blew up and the staircase is partly gone, are going to looking to immediate needs like getting the heck of there before it collapses.

This did happen in Hiroshima and Nagasaki - I've read survivors' accounts and the majority of people who died apart from those killed directly in the bast, died because they were walking around, often for hours in a daze trying to find their families or their homes (even walk out of town).

At the time I remember one interviewing saying "so remember shelter in place" but what if there is no longer any shelter or even a place?.....

Based on the attack/nuclear tangent, this is an example of why being in a big city, especially the built-up central region, is bad during a major attack. Do your best not to be there.
True but again, this may need its own thread, but anyone can be trapped in a city even if they don't live in one.

The young teenager who lost her baby and had to have her leg amputated without anesthetic in the Federal Building bombing was there to register her infant for social security (required by law, at least at the time).

In normal times there are things we can ONLY do at the American Embassy in Dublin, they have modified that now but normally there are NO exceptions (unless you are dying or something, then they send someone to the hospital).

So looking at situations like this to learn from and then realizing complications we might have thought of before, is worth the time to look at them a bit; but we might want to start another or revive a previous thread:

"What to do when The Bomb (or an equivalent big-boom) falls"...especially when caught in the wrong place at the wrong time..

I don't buy for a second that the explosion was caused by ammonium nitrate that had been stored there since 2013. And neither does the Arab world.

We see speculation on this forum about ammonium nitrate absorbing moisture.
We see speculation on this forum about the velocity of the explosion exceeding the velocity of ammonium nitrate.
We see speculation on this forum about a video of a "metallic object" flying towards the warehouse.
We see the POTUS saying it was "an attack" and that his military advisors informed him it was a bomb.

All of this for the wackadoodle militant muslim, will justify an attack on Israel.

You know they're talking about the same speculation on their sites.

The official story will be AN...regardless.

I doubt they want anybody digging into their port operations.
No doubt in my mind that it was AN. My question is, what set it off? Some internal faction -- I understand Lebanon is in economic and social shambles? Israel taking out a Hezbollah rocket building site? A freak accident due to a fire next door? What set off the AN storage site?

Mind referring us to your source was for rad readings?
The reason I ask, is @armscontrolwonk, Jeffrey Lewis, who has seen more NUDETs than any of us here, indicated it was NOT a NUDET.

Ammonium Nitrate goes off with a bang when you mix diesel fuel with it or anything close. It still needs a bang to set it off. All the old hard rock miners used it back in the day and some still do. Looks like a ammo dump explosion.

When AN absorbs moisture, does it just reduce the efficacy of it as an explosive?

There were 3000ish tons of it there. If it was degraded by 75%, that's still 750 tons, effectively.

Still capable of a significant boom, in anybody's world.

I could believe a combination of rocket fuel, ammo and AN. AN can create quite a bang by itself, Texas city comes to mind.
Yep.
Using a location between a fireworks storage building and a warehouse storing over 2000 tons of Ammonium Nitrate, for a missile assembly/storage area was beyond stupid. Fire in the fireworks area spread to the missile storage/ assembly area which in turn detonated the ammonium nitrate which was the big explosion that seems to have impressed the hell out of everyone.
This was most likely not an attack or bomb as the President said. Even the Pentagon is dismissing that. The fire burned for quite a while and missiles and warheads were cooking off, before stting off the main AN explosion.
People who depart from Occam's Razor, do so at their own risk of appearing foolish, but that's never stopped people before.

Image at RT.

I guess it did leave a hole in the water.

Also, it looks like the explosion was in the building directly east of the silos, not the one SE.

Here's a pathway to look at aerial images of the port, from post #213. (from before the boom)

I found an aerial of it.

Go to Bing maps. https://www.bing.com/maps/

In the search bar, C&P these coordinates in.
33.901103, 35.518102

Change the view from road to aerial. (top right)

That is the grain elevator...at least it fits the still shots.

I think the explosion was in the first building SE of the grain elevator.
