BRKG Massive Explosion in Beirut

And not one person yelled "Allah Akbar"

The guys in the boat, who took the video from across the water did. But when I watched it later, it cut off before they spoke. But. Their voices sounded shocked, not celebratory. Like some here would say “Oh my ...!” Just my opinion.

ETA: there are at least two videos from the water. So, I should correct the above statement. The video wasn’t altered. My bad!

2750 tons of ammonium nitrate. 410 degrees F and it decomposes into water vapor and nitrous oxide which can decompose further into nitric acid and ammonia vapor.
This is not an explosive reaction unless and the ammonium nitrate is made to detonate via a detonator or explosive shock.

The Texas City ammonium nitrate explosion was 7,700 tons and had an explosive yield of 2.7 kilotons according to scientists.

On 16 April 1947, SS Grandcamp, loaded with 8,500 short tons (7,700 t) of ammonium nitrate, exploded in port at Texas City, Texas. 581 died, over 5,000 injured. Using standard chemical data for decomposition of ammonium nitrate makes this equivalent to 2.7 kilotons of TNT exploding

The Beirut explosion was only 2750 tons of ammonium nitrate and the yield would have probably been close to 1 kiloton or slightly more.
Not bad, but no where near the biggest.

Was this an attack?? Probably not but it could have been one Lebanese faction against Hezbolah.
Accidental big Ammonium nitrate explosions have happened several times before in other countries. Mostly on ships where fires started and then reached the ammonium nitrate.

:: helping mzk slap Madcow, coz lawd knows that woman needs it! ::

So. . .. Iran tries to talk Hezbollah into acting against Israel, they balk, and now they've caught a case of Iran's boom-booms?
Israel or Iran behind it?
Horrific images- not sure why explosive material would be near grain bins. . .

Is it going to be a singular event, Lord willing it is, but if not, where do we expect to see the next event?

I seem to remember that one of our members here is Lebanese. She's a Christian lady. ( is it Jubilee on Earth?) She mentioned something about talking to her father back in Lebanon. I sure hope he's safe and far from this blast. Praying for her and her family.

ETA I just did a search. It is Jubilee! Here's what she wrote in the main Corona thread. I hope it's ok to quote someone

"I was just going to post this. You beat me to it. ;) My father lives in Beirut and messaged me last night, told me that Lebanon is on the verge of collapse right now economically, and they’re about to crash harder than Greece because of this."

Gosh, I feel so bad for her. I think she's in the middle of moving from MO to MI about now. :(

Ammonium nitrate is not really that brisant, it’s a relative slow acting explosive. In other words it does not create or develop a high velocity shattering force such as RDX or C-4 would. Much like comparing a black powder muzzle-loader to a modern day rifle with the higher pressure smokeless powders.

For there to be building damage miles away it would have to be something a bit more brisant than plain ol ANitrate.
Actually Ammonium nitrate, especially in the presence of fuel is classified as a high order explosive. It can detonate rather than explode in a pressure sensitive burn.
Examples of HE include TNT, C-4, Semtex, nitroglycerin, dynamite, and ammonium nitrate fuel oil

Having thousands of tons of ammonium nitrate stored at the port for over 7 years as admitted by Lebanon officials themselves was beyond stupid/

What happened to the people in Beirut is sad. People have responded to the explosion to find and treat the injured and find the dead. This will continue for days. How many lost souls will never be found or just pieces found?

The amount of damage, injury to individuals and death is sickening. This was an explosion of munitions or Anitrate or rocket fuel, but not nuclear for there has been no report of fallout or comms and electronic wiped out.

Think about what 40kt or even 20kt nuclear weapons would destroy. Imagine the vast damage that one nuke will do and then multiple it by numerous nukes exploding across a country or countries not taking into account fallout spread. Panic will rule. A 40kt nuke would essentially destroy NYC and the death toll will be tremendous as people die days, weeks and months later.

MADD is understood by most countries, but once the first mushroom cloud is created there will be no sane minds ruling. When the nuclear war starts, it will not be limited. There will be no recovery except in small remote locations where the people join together to survive if you can call that survival.

Has the first shot been fired in WW3?

If Israeli did this, how soon will Iran respond with the nukes that they do not have. The retaliation by Israeli will be horrific. The world lives at the edge every day.

God help us.

Texican....
I told my husband to watch Israel and Iran earlier tonight. Serious times we live in.

I've seen speculation it was rocket fuel, by those who usually know what they're speaking of... last I saw there was no evidence of nuclear fallout and readings remained normal.

ETA:
"Iran intends to produce the powerful explosive Octogen for use in the warheads of its missiles to improve their 'destructive and penetration power,' Iranian Defense Minister Brigadier General Hossein Dehqan said Wednesday."

Sigh. Prayers up.
You know, they have weaponized Diversity but it seems that each time one of these huge Events happen, somebody on the board has a personal or professional connection to it. And the prayer chains start and wonderful things happen. Yay, diversity. I like our TB version much better.

Even WITH the fuel oil, AN won't go THAT high order that we watched.

More than ANYBODY has said so far is going on.
Chuck, read this twitter link that Mz Kitty posted earlier. It seems to be a good explanation of what could have happened. Carlos Osweda explains step by step what is happening. He thinks it is stored HMX fuel for the stored Iranian missles. HMX is similar to RDX.

This twunt has NO CLUE how the friggin REAL world WORKS!!

I can think of half a dozen reasons for DJT to say what he said about this blast. NOT THE LEAST of those is the simple fact that with 400 posts we came to that conclusion WITHOUT 4-star generals whispering in our ears. BESIDES the fact that he put the dicks who DID it on notice that we KNOW.
With the Trump/Soliemani Corollary that KNOWING means a J-DAM or a REAPER Drone could be incoming ANY SECOND now. Think Soliemani bitches...
Not good for future resting or digestion.

I just edited my post. It is Jubilee on Earth. Her father is in Beirut. I can't begin to imagine what she's going through.

Serious question if you care to answer: What would one thousand nukes do to the USA? What would they use? Who all would jump on us? Thank you for your response.

1000 nukes on the US depending on where they're fired would decimate the US. The economy would collapse, supplies of anything you could imagine would simply disappear, not to mention between 20 to 50 million dead. That doesn't count for the ones who would die later from cancers and radiation poisioning.
The US as we know it would cease to exist.

To be fair, there are reasons for him to bide his time, as well. What he said was no surprise, of course, but when a head of state of the western world uses words, there are consequences. Still, madcow is the genesis of all those ole ginsoaked karen creatures, as far as im concerned, and that's all I will saw about that. ;x

Why would Iran hit a port and arms depot in Beirut? I thought Iran was supporting Hezbollah?

Thanks. I dreamed it two days ago. I would much rather have had an earthquake dream.

Funny you mention that-had a similar dream twice in the past week or so. Never held much stock in interpreting dreams (I was also shot in the head and died in one dream-that one woke me up) but they were like I was living a PONAST study. That and the 2008 report on hospitals in major cities after attack. These dreams made Threads look like a child's TV show.

That being said; hearing it was a storage and transshipment point for Hezbollah missiles that went up. Small rockets but lots of them. And explosives for the warheads in the same facility. The ammonium nitrate was just an add to the party favors.

Oh, and it's REAAAAALLLLL quiet in my area this evening.

Look at the second bogey (there is one, then another, then two together) I stopped the second one at 28 seconds in and the tail and nose are silvery reflective white while the body and wings are black. Real flying squawking birds don't have reflective feathers.

Here is a different angle. Go through the comments, someone captured the image on a still shot. There definitely a dark object with some sort of reflection.

The grain bins were not full, apparently due to the economic difficulties and the country trying to meet the need for bread.

Not all BIG KABOOMS are enemy action. Cooking ammonium nitrate in the hot sun for a few years ... prolly a bad idea.

My biggest anfo boom was 3 charges of 15-20 pounds each popping out a stump. You could feel it through the soles of your feet but it barely went THUMP when it went off and nothing flew. Charges were set at least 4' deep and tamped.

I know of some 1k pound ANFO training and evaluation charges from years ago, I wasn't on scene but people who were definitely were impressed.

I also recall the DoD used an AN filled water tower to simulate a tactical nuke at White Sands IIRC.

True, Doz, but hezbollah rockets/fuel exploding in this time and at that place, in the context of Israels' positions. . . could be just a cigar, but I guess this big kaboom has enemy action writ Large

Toll expected to rise in blast that shook Beirut, killing 78 and injuring thousands

Samia Nakhoul, Ellen Francis
4 Min Read

BEIRUT (Reuters) - Lebanese rescue workers dug through the rubble looking for survivors of a powerful warehouse explosion that shook the capital Beirut, killing 78 people and injuring nearly 4,000 in a toll that officials expected to rise.

Smoke rises from the site of an explosion in Beirut, Lebanon August 4, 2020. REUTERS/Issam Abdallah
Tuesday’s blast at port warehouses storing highly explosive material was the most powerful in years in Beirut, already reeling from an economic crisis and a surge in coronavirus infections.

President Michel Aoun said that 2,750 tonnes of ammonium nitrate, used in fertilisers and bombs, had been stored for six years at the port without safety measures, and he said that was “unacceptable”.

He called for an emergency cabinet meeting on Wednesday.

Officials did not say what caused the blaze that set off the blast. A security source and local media said it was started by welding work being carried out on a hole in the warehouse.

“What we are witnessing is a huge catastrophe,” the head of Lebanon’s Red Cross George Kettani told broadcaster Mayadeen. “There are victims and casualties everywhere.”

Hours after the blast, which struck shortly after 6 p.m. (1500 GMT), a fire still blazed in the port district, casting an orange glow across the night sky as helicopters hovered and ambulance sirens sounded across the capital.

The blast revived memories of a 1975-90 civil war and its aftermath, when Lebanese endured heavy shelling, car bombings and Israeli air raids. Some residents thought an earthquake had struck.

Dazed, weeping and injured people walked through streets searching for relatives.

“The blast blew me off metres away. I was in a daze and was all covered in blood. It brought back the vision of another explosion I witnessed against the U.S. embassy in 1983,” said Huda Baroudi, a Beirut designer.

Prime Minister Hassan Diab promised there would be accountability for the deadly blast at the “dangerous warehouse”, adding “those responsible will pay the price.”

The U.S. embassy in Beirut warned residents about reports of toxic gases released by the blast, urging people to stay indoors and wear masks if available.

MANY MISSING
“There are many people missing. People are asking the emergency department about their loved ones and it is difficult to search at night because there is no electricity,” Health Minister Hamad Hasan told Reuters.

Hasan said 78 people were killed and nearly 4,000 injured.

Footage of the explosion shared by residents on social media showed a column of smoke rising from the port, followed by an enormous blast, sending a white cloud and a fireball into the sky. Those filming the incident from high buildings 2 km (one mile) from the port were thrown backwards by the shock.

Bleeding people were seen running and shouting for help in clouds of smoke and dust in streets littered with damaged buildings, flying debris, and wrecked cars and furniture.

The explosion occurred three days before a U.N.-backed court is due to deliver a verdict in the trial of four suspects from the Shi’ite Muslim group Hezbollah over a 2005 bombing which killed former Prime Minister Rafik al-Hariri and 21 others.

Hariri was killed by a huge truck bomb on the same waterfront, about 2 km (about one mile) from the port.

Israeli officials said Israel, which has fought several wars with Lebanon, had nothing to do with Tuesday’s blast and said their country was ready to give humanitarian and medical assistance. Shi’ite Iran, the main backer of Hezbollah, also offered support, as did Tehran’s regional rival Saudi Arabia, a leading Sunni power.

At a White House briefing, U.S. President Donald Trump indicated that the explosion was a possible attack, but two U.S. officials, speaking on condition of anonymity, said initial information contradicted Trump’s view.
