Classico pasta sauce also comes in canning jars.
I have heard on other sites and blogs not to use them for canning because there is a "coating" on the jars or on the inside of the jars (depends on the source). I truly, honestly don't know if that is true or not. Currently, I use them for dry storage, but if it ever got to the point where I need to wet can, I would use them. I think plenty of people use them for canning without any ill effect -- maybe just a rumor put out by the jar companies. Who knows? I have not finished moving out of our other house and I have at least 10 cases of new quart jars under the stairs and several pint cases. Next trip down those cases are coming up here. I cannot garden on any large scale but there is always some cannable produce for sale up here.

I've used them to can after a thorough scrubbing. They are Atlas jars and have worked fine for me.

Dh wanted to go to Sams Club (Rock Hill SC) today for a couple things and I went with him. I have NEVER seen that store so empty. They've completely re-arranged to make it look fuller but the tops of the shelves are empty. Only a few packs of Charmin tp, no paper towels, plenty of napkins. They did have two types of 25lb bags of rice.

Neither here nor there.
Shortages, in the store green beans and corn are looking skimpy. Also in the commodities that I get there have been no green beans or corn for the last couple of months. And come to think of it really no vegetables at all except tomatoes, and potatoes. No green peas either. I did get canned peaches and pears. The commodities where I get frozen foods, there were not dried beans or rice. And the other commodities that I get had one 1 pound packages of beans and one 1 pound package or rice.

God is good, all the time.

Judy

Fresh green beans are $2.99 a pound here right now, I need to buy some canned beans, I won't be buying fresh at those price points.

If there's a plastic coating on the insides of the jars, which I highly doubt, you can find out by simply throwing a match into a clean jar, if there's plastic you'll smell it melting and right away.

Costco in Mt. Pleasant looked much the same yesterday....

Went to the walmart in my AO of n.ga this morning. Other then the below most things were like the new normal. Canned and frozen veggie supplies were low. Dog food supplies were low. Cleaners were low. Still no yeast other then the little packages.

So - I've been adding a couple of cans of meats every trip to add to my stash usually buying the 24oz GV canned beef. 1 can goes well with a cup of rice to feed 2 people. Today noticed that the keystone canned meats were on clearance. Big cans were down about a buck fifty to $6.20 for beef. I'm guessing that they are having supply issues and want to use the shelf space for something else as lately it sells well in my area and when in stock it goes fast. Also no spam and no treat brands.

The GV canned beef I normally buy was out of stock today and the only canned meat which was really available was canned chicken and canned tuna. The dogs like the tuna so I bought a couple of the 4pk bundles. Lots of vienna sausage so I picked up a dozen cans of the GV brand to feed to the dogs. For me I like the beef and chicken on either rice or noodles. I have plenty of chicken from a ingles sale a month or so ago so since beef supplies seem to be hit of miss I'm going to hit it hard next time its in stock to bring my supply levels up to where I want them to be for that item.

Did an Instacart order from Smart and Final today because they had the canned Hansens Cherry Vanilla soda I wanted. They had it but the rest of the order was a mess. No name brand towells, no Swiffer mop, no Ajax cleanser,
a limit of 2 packages of 9 volt batteries, no Jewish rye bread. When I saw how it was going I had the guy throw in a package of 12 flour sack towells. Guess where they came from? China of course. Washed them twice with bleach but figured they might come in handy the way this us going. This store used to be the local restaurant supply store too.

Overnight our smoke alarm malfunctioned so tried to go to HD rather than Amazon but there were more people there than I have ever seen. Turned around and will go at 6 tomorrow.

US: Canned Food Shortages due to Chinese Tin/Steel Supply Chain Failures
12,582 views•Premiered 6 hours ago

Run time is 8:08

STOCK UP NOW! Even as NPR mocks "Bean Buyer's Remorse," we are hearing that food packagers/distributors are unable to source tin/steel from China, resulting in a shortage of cans for food. With an already faltering supply chain, COVID-19 harvest labor concerns, and massive flooding in China, the future looks bleak -- start growing/storing food now.

A friend of mine has been scoring really nice clothes at the local (Corning NY area) SA. Some with the tags still on them. I presume people have been bored at home and have cleaned out their closets.
Went to Goodwill a couple weeks ago (central Ohio) and noticed the same. Might also be from people buying online during the lockdown but no ability to return due to stores being closed, or missing the return window. Fitting rooms have been closed so people are sometimes buying the wrong size.

I need to go back soon, lots of good deals to be found, especially at thrift stores in affluent communities. I was amazed to find a sunbeam bread maker for $3.00 on my last trip :D

Just got back from an H-E-B run. Sodas down to the basics, canned goods down to the basics, canned soups down to the basics. Looks like that tin can issue is legit. Plentiful supplies of all things packaged in plastic. Lots of TP. The paper plates section was decimated however. Milk and frozen sections full. Dairy and eggs full. Bread full.

I was just browsing online for my local walmart. There are many many canned foods out of stock. Since I'm probably obsessed it makes me want to run to the store, although I need nothing, and really nothing else that would be good to have except another generator or two and a newer iphone. If we get a second stimulus check I'll try to take care of those two things.

I am pretty sure we use them. Great jars and thicker ones than the new ball jars.

We are seeing a lot of the same here.

Isles are wider and shorter. You actually have more than enough space for two carts to pass each other, etc. I haven't seen such space since I was a kid.

The wife went shopping yesterday and is reporting spot shortages in most stores. From what she said there is not depth to the stock so if one person buys half a dozen cans etc, it will have an empty spot.

Not just supplies but also one of the small generators that you can run inside to power your machine. I've been on my brothers butt for the longest time to do that and he can well afford to do it.

I've been looking into a solar charged/powered gennie, I'm conflicted between buying an all american pressure canner and the gennie.

You're welcome, please post if you're seeing any shortages. From what people are posting, the situation seems to be escalating rapidly. I'm not sure it's just a regional issue anymore.
It still is, but it is changing. You are a bit ahead of the game right now.

Truthfully, I don't understand the need for a "solar" generator. Buy a standard 1k generator and 10 gallons of gas and that will last a long time if only used for a cpap.

Unless they need a lot more power than I understand.

In fact 90% of us can get away with a simple 3500 inverter generator (inverter to allow for sensitive electronics) and 20 gallons of gas and still power most everything in the house. You will need to monitor it, but it will work.

Oh my gosh, if not one we make at home, a chocolate cake with white buttercream frosting from HEB's bakery dept. Even better, their little tiny chocolate cupcakes with white frosting....more frosting to chocolate cake ratio, and they're bite-size (well, two bites for me).

That's similar to my homemade Oreo cake. Chocolate fudge cake mix, creamy vanilla frosting, with crumpled Oreo cookies sprinkled all over the top. Sometimes, I drizzle it with chocolate syrup, too, if I have some on hand.

If you already have a canner then I'd go for the generator.. If the electric goes out you can still can with what you have, but not be able to power your machine.

Here is one that I suggested my dear brother look at.

Chocolate cake.
Ooh! You read my mind! I realized I can’t stock enough chocolate so I came up with a recipe for a chocolate mug cake. It uses only pantry items. I’m going to make up a dry mix so all I have to do is measure some out and add oil and water, zap in microwave for 70 seconds and it’s ready. I’m thinking about stocking some chocolate syrup to put on top.

Been hitting Costco and Kroger at least twice a week. Costco is very disappointing anymore. Your lucky to find both toilet paper and paper towel at the same time. Today ... no paper towel. Their Kirkland tuna has been out for over a month. Over priced tuna in sea salt is there replacement ( very little of and smaller cans). We’ve been buying the Kirkland canned chicken breast. They were down to their last pallet of that today and moved to the front of the store. Spam almost gone. 25 pound bags of rice almost gone.

No canned veggies other than black beans. We’ve been stocking Like crazy ... need more canned fruit ... becoming harder to find at either store. No Campbell’s chunky chili with beans at Kroger. Slim pickings on soup.

We will keep stocking until we can’t

I agree with the advice above. If we were in Arizona, there might be some validity to getting a solar generator, but in Iowa, the best "alternative" power is wind. There are small wind turbines that can be used in a backyard, but there are zoning problems with them in many neighborhoods.

I have a large battery because my main need is to power the computer long enough to send emergency emails or power my ham radio in the field. I had a generator and ran it under load every month. It was a pita to maintain. Now, I just have the big battery, and it's fine for now.

Similar to mine (mine is no longer made)
