Protesters in the U.S. capital, Washington, D.C., marked the country's Independence Day on July 4 reciting the names of Breona Taylor and George Floyd, and demanding an end to anti-Black racism. Floyd was a Black man who died in police custody in Minneapolis, Minn. in May. His death sparked a wave of global protests against racial injustice. Taylor was a 26-year-old Black emergency medical technician killed on March 13, after officers entered her apartment bearing a "no-knock" arrest warrant. Saturday's protesters gathered in D.C.'s Lafayette Square, located near the White House. Dozens of police on bicycles cleared an area where protesters had set up tents. They allowed protesters back in after the tents were moved away. On July 3, U.S. President Donald Trump accused "angry mobs" of trying to erase history with efforts to remove or rethink monuments of U.S. historical figures, many of which are Confederate generals, and used a speech at Mount Rushmore to portray himself as a bulwark against left-wing extremism. Instead of kicking back on Independence day, many took to the streets. A Blackout Solidarity Protest was held at Oakland's Lake Merritt and artists painted "Black Lives Matter" on the streets of San Jose.

OAKLAND, Calif. (KGO) -- Instead of kicking back on Independence day, many took to the streets. Multiple protests were held across the Bay Area on Saturday.

In the East Bay, a Blackout Solidarity Protest was held at Oakland's Lake Merritt. Attendees were asked to dress all in black to show their solidarity with the Black Lives Matter movement.

Organizers also prepared 2,000 meals to serve for free, asking only for donations in return.

In the South Bay, artists used their talents to help San Jose stand in solidarity with the Black Lives Matter movement.

They painted the words "Black Lives Matter" on the road near Backesto Park, at 15th and Empire Streets in North San Jose.

The group called Saturday an "Angel-versary" in honor of Anthony Nunez who was killed by San Jose police on July 4 in 2016.

Live Updates: Protesters, Trump Supporters Clash In Front Of The Washington Monument As Fireworks Exploded Overhead
9:49 p.m.: In the red, white, and blue glare of fireworks, a group of protesters and Trump supporters faced off near the Washington Monument.

A chorus of competing chants—“U.S.A., U.S.A.” and “Black lives matter” broke out—and individuals got into heated, pointed confrontations with one another shortly before 9 p.m.

U.S. Park Police arrived within minutes, and dozens of officers fanned out to separate the two sides. As they moved people back, fireworks exploded overhead, glinting off riot shields and placards and drowning out the sounds of the chanting.

Garret Dufresne, a 25-year-old former grocery store worker, was among the demonstrators involved in the exchange. His voice was hoarse from “yelling all day” as he explained that he drove 36 hours from Seattle to be in the nation’s capital.

“I came here to protest police injustice. I drove all the way across America to protest,” Dufresne said. “I felt like Independence Day, it’s the best opportunity to try to take back our rights as Americans. We were founded on freedom, but it was actually freedom supported by slaves. So we need to make reparations for all the harm that we have done.”

In his telling of the confrontation, Trump supporters were “taking video and harassing peaceful protesters.”

Meanwhile, Diane Atkins, a municipal worker from Brooklyn, said she came to celebrate the holiday with “fellow patriots” and to support the president. She dismissed the demonstrators as “Marxists.”

“This is not about racial equality, this is not about justice. This is about people that want anarchy. We can’t allow it. We’re a country of law and order,” said Atkins, shortly after pepper spraying several protesters. She alleged they tried to rip her phone out of her hands.

“The Fourth of July is a beautiful celebration to remember that we are all born free and we are all Americans and I wish that everybody would come together under the American flag,” she added.

Crowds Are Much Thinner Than Normal On The National Mall Ahead Of Fourth Of July Fireworks

7:50 p.m.: What if you threw a big party, but not many people showed up?

That seemed to be the case on Saturday afternoon, when President Trump’s promise of a “special evening” with military flyovers and the usual fireworks display seems to have done little to entice people to go to the National Mall — usually a crowded gathering spot for Independence Day celebrations — amid scorching temperatures, continued demonstrations, and the ongoing pandemic.

Despite the National Park Service’s offer of free face coverings, the crowds on and along the National Mall have been sparse. Fewer than 100 people sat around the World War II Memorial, while relatively larger crowds formed around the Lincoln Memorial and the Washington Monument.

Thousands of people usually stake out spots on the Mall for hours ahead of the fireworks, but in the runup to the annual show, large portions of the grassy areas remained devoid of people for much of the afternoon. As the evening progressed and the flyovers began, more people began showing up—though it remains a far cry from most years.

And that may be of some solace to D.C. Mayor Muriel Bowser and other local officials, who had expressed concern that the possibility of large-scale gatherings on the National Mall would violate both local and federal guidelines on crowds during the COVID-19 pandemic.

6 p.m.: Protests have started ramping up ahead of the official start of the July 4th celebrations, which kick off at 6:45 p.m. with a series of military flyovers and President Donald Trump’s speech from the White House South Lawn at 7 p.m.

While demonstrations wove throughout the city during the day, large crowds have coalesced in areas around the White House, with a few hundred protesters at nearby Black Lives Matter Plaza. Vendors are selling shirts and ice cream. A group of protesters stood on an American flag and handed out paper flags for a “flag burning challenge” at 7:30 p.m. Another group of marchers is making their way to the National Mall.

Several reporters also documented one arrest at 16th and K Streets.

Earlier in the afternoon, a group of protesters marched north along Georgia Avenue from LeDroit Park, chanting “Bring back Chocolate City” and “Black people used to live here.” A few hours later, a large group moved down 13th Street NW in the direction of the National Mall, holding a large banner with “What does freedom really look like?” written on it and briefly blocking New York Avenue and then Pennsylvania Avenue.

Jack Jensen, a 27-year-old barber in D.C., rode ahead of the group on his bike, helping clear the streets as they marched through. Slung across his back was a police shield now bearing the message “Defund, disarm and disband”; he said he took it from officers who cleared protesters trying to pull down a statue of Andrew Jackson across from the White House in late June.

“It’s about time I could flex my privilege for people who so often can speak too little,” he said.

Derrick Walker, a 47-year-old from Stafford, Virginia, also joined the protest on bike, alongside his 12-year-old son, DJ. He said that while he celebrated the Fourth of July in traditional fashion last year in Boston with his family, this year feels different.

“The Fourth of July used to mean independence and freedom. However, given the circumstances of society at this point, it’s really just another day,” he said.

Walker said he has been coming into D.C. three days a week for protests since late May, and that his recent activism was fueled by the fear of what his own kids could experience.

“He rides his bike around Stafford,” he said of DJ. “I don’t want to stop him and say no. I don’t want him to grow with fear. But he already has it. We were riding through one of the neighborhoods here in D.C., and he said, ‘Dad, we could be shot for being here.’ My 12-year-old said that. July 4th Starts With Protests Scattered Throughout D.C.

3:22 p.m.: July 4th in D.C. started with a few disparate demonstrations and marches throughout the city, including a sit-in at the Supreme Court, and another at Black Lives Matter Plaza that continued from Friday night.

Around 11:30 a.m., a group of a few dozen Trump supporters marched past the National Museum of African American History and Culture, some flashing a hand sign known to symbolize white power, flanked by a group of Metropolitan Police Department officers on bicycles.

Some members of the group carried an insignia associated with the Proud Boys, a Southern Poverty Law Center-designated hate group affiliated with white nationalist and alt-right extremist views. The group marched past the African American History Museum and east towards the U.S. Capitol, taking photos on the National Mall, but didn’t seem to have a certain destination. Few were seen wearing masks.

Around 2 p.m, vendors lined the sidewalks of Black Lives Matter Plaza, where about a dozen tents remained from an overnight protest, dubbed “Occupy H Street.” A man played the drums outside Lafayette Park, where a fence has kept protesters from entering. Protesters said police cleared the H Street encampment around noon, asking them to relocate north on BLM Plaza in a span of about 30 minutes.

An organizer of the overnight demonstration, who only identified himself as “Sleez,” said the group was prepared to remain until D.C. Mayor Muriel Bowser commits to reforms that would defund the police.

“You can’t just say ‘Black lives matter’ and call it a day,” he said. “You have to put policies in place to make sure that Black lives are treated like they … matter.”

Sleez said he is not celebrating the holiday.

“It was independence for white, land-owning men,” he said. “Women weren’t free, Black people damn sure weren’t free, Native Americans weren’t free. It’s nothing to celebrate.”

Lacresha Millner decided to bring her four nieces to the Black Lives Matter Plaza for the Fourth of July. She said her family celebrated Juneteenth, the day enslaved Black people in Texas were told they were free, with a family barbecue and firecrackers.

Millner, who lives in Upper Marlboro, Maryland, said she has taught her nieces that enslaved people were not free when the United States declared its Independence on July 4,1776.

“Our ancestors weren’t necessarily free,” she said. “The U.S. is celebrating our independence but yet there were still people who had no independence.

Ralph Clayton, 58, drove nine hours from Athens, Georgia, to support protesters who have called for racial justice in the aftermath of the police killing of George Floyd.

He waved flags that declared “Black Lives Matter,” beads of sweat sticking to his face. Clayton said he had waited his entire life for racial justice and planned to spend the next two days waving his flags in the D.C. streets.

“We’ve been done wrong a long time,” he said. “This new generation of kids is coming up … I stand behind them.”

Also during the afternoon, demonstrators unveiled a “human Pan-African flag” while chanting Breonna Taylor’s name on the National Mall, near the Washington Monument. Protesters were given red, black, and green banners to create the flag, which was designed to represent people of the African Diaspora.

President Trump is hosting the “Salute to America” event Saturday evening despite warnings against any event that could encourage mass gatherings during the COVID-19 pandemic — Mayor Bowser encouraged D.C. residents to stay home. (A majority of the fireworks displays across the country have been canceled, per the New York Times.)

A series of military flyovers are scheduled from 6:45 p.m. to 8 p.m., followed by a 35-minute fireworks display just after 9 p.m., according to a press release.

Protests are expected to continue through the night, including marches from Malcolm X Park, a “Vets for BLM” march to the White House, and a demonstration at the Supreme Court.

The prologue of the Declaration explains the natural right of a people to dissolve their government and reconstitute it to one that better protects their rights. It states:

"We hold these truths to be self-evident, that all men are created equal, that they are endowed by their Creator with certain unalienable Rights, that among these are Life, Liberty and the pursuit of Happiness.--That to secure these rights, Governments are instituted among Men, deriving their just powers from the consent of the governed, --That whenever any Form of Government becomes destructive of these ends, it is the Right of the People to alter or to abolish it, and to institute new Government, laying its foundation on such principles and organizing its powers in such form, as to them shall seem most likely to effect their Safety and Happiness. "

The rest of the Declaration is a list of wrongdoing by the Crown to justify separation and independence from the Crown.

The Declaration has nothing to do with slavery, women's equality or native rights. It is not about individuals. It is about governments -whether American people are to be subjects of an English monarch with no representation in Parliament, or whether they are to be self-governing by a government of their own making. (At this point, it 13 separate nation states, which join in a loose confederacy.)

A statue of famed black abolitionist Frederick Douglass was destroyed at Maplewood Park in Rochester, New York, over the weekend, which comes on the anniversary of a notable speech that Douglass delivered at an Independence Day event in the city in 1852.

“The base and lower part of the statue was damaged, as was a finger on the statue’s left hand,” the Rochester Democrat and Chronicle reported. “There is historical significance to the timing of the vandalism — though no one can now say whether the timing was mere happenstance — just as there is historical significance to the statue’s very location. The Maplewood Park location includes Kelsey’s Landing, where Douglass, Harriet Tubman, and others helped shuttle slaves to safety along the Underground Railroad.”

Carvin Eison,who helped bring the statue to the city, told the local newspaper that the statue was too damaged to be repaired but indicated that another statue would be created to take its place.

“Rochester Police are investigating damage done to a statue of Frederick Douglass in Maplewood Park,” WXXI News reported. “It happened over the weekend, and police say that the statue was torn off its base, and left about 50 feet from its pedestal. The statue had been placed over the fence to Genesee River gorge and was leaning against the fence.”

The destruction of the statue comes on the 168th anniversary of a notable speech that Douglass gave where he said, “The fact is, ladies and gentlemen, the distance between this platform and the slave plantation, from which I escaped, is considerable — and the difficulties to be overcome in getting from the latter to the former, are by no means slight. That I am here to-day is, to me, a matter of astonishment as well as of gratitude.”

“This, for the purpose of this celebration, is the 4th of July,” Douglass later added. “It is the birthday of your National Independence, and of your political freedom. This, to you, is what the Passover was to the emancipated people of God. It carries your minds back to the day, and to the act of your great deliverance; and to the signs, and to the wonders, associated with that act, and that day.”

The destruction of the statue comes as far-left rioters have destroyed numerous historical statues and monuments in recent weeks, including “statues of former Presidents George Washington, Thomas Jefferson, Ulysses S. Grant, and attempted to destroy the statue of former President Andrew Jackson before being stopped by law enforcement,” The Daily Wire reported. “Statues of the man who wrote “The Star-Spangled Banner,” a notable person from the Catholic church, and a Holocaust memorial have also been destroyed in recent days.”

I know, I noticed that after I c&p it over, no date. I posted it anyway, because I did look, and there were other stories reporting the same. I do remember this coming out in the news over the past decade, more than once. He also thinks he is a god. Some of these news items came out in 2013, and after. When he sold his soul to the devil, like he states on stage, shown in the second video, it was probably before that.

Qualified immunity. What it is and what it isn’t.

There has been a lot of misinformation being spread on what qualified immunity is and isn’t. We would like to set the record straight.

Qualified immunity DOES NOT protect officers from criminal misconduct. Individuals, cities, and departments can still pursue criminal charges, IF a criminal act took place.

Officers ARE subject to the same rule of law as everyone else. This is something we take very seriously. In fact, there are specific laws that specifically apply to law enforcement and misconduct.

Removing qualified immunity WILL expose all officers to civil lawsuits, which have much lower standards, by anyone at anytime and makes them PERSONALLY financially responsible for any accusation. All the while jamming up the court system with a wave of frivolous lawsuits.

Qualified immunity is the one thing that protects us from losing our homes and livelihoods for people who want to sue us for doing our jobs.

The officers with George Floyd WILL be tried through the criminal process; qualified immunity DOES NOT protect criminal acts, ie bad cops.

People can still find justice against bad cops through the criminal justice process.
We work in an industry where we put our lives at risk everyday. High-risk jobs come with high liability. There is no first responder that would continue without any protection against the risks of their profession.

We are open to change. We are open to working toward a process to better address bad cops.

But, removing something that serves as a protection for good cops will only make the issue worse and deter good people from joining our profession.

Black Lives Matter (BLM) protesters took a U-turn into blatant antisemitism recently – that’s if you don’t count targeting Jewish businesses during the riots in Los Angeles as a function of antisemtism.

At a rally in Washington, D.C. led by Harvard student Christian Tabash, protesters could be heard chanting their accusations that the Jewish state murders children.

Amid calls alternating between “Black Lives Matter and “Palestinian Lives Matter,” the protesters intoned, “Israel, we know you; you murder children, too.”\

Tabash explained that the Palestinian cause is “intrinsically tied to Black Lives Matter” since “American capitalism” and the state of Israel were both founded on the repression of minorities.

Tabash also promoted the common antisemitic canard that Israel is the “puppet master of continents,” meaning that Jews run the world.

It wasn’t the first time BLM has veered into antisemitism and, judging from how the movement – which has embraced all the intersectional causes celebres du jour — it won’t be the last.

In fact, some correctly noted it was only a “matter of time.”

It is also not surprising that the intersectional BLM movement — which has also embraced Marxist theology, the LGBTQ movement and whose goal is to “disrupt the Western-prescribed nuclear family structure” – embraces such antisemitism, either.
The group was founded in 2014 through a merger of activists from three antisemitic organizations: the Nation of Islam, the Black Panthers and Dream Catchers.

By 2016, BLM’s platform (which has since been deleted) partnered with the antisemitic Boycott, Divest and Sanction (BDS) movement against Israel and accused Israel of being an “apartheid state.”

Moreover, the platform declared,
“The U.S. justifies and advances the global war on terror via its alliance with Israel and is complicit in the genocide taking place against the Palestinian people.”
It is time for all decent people to sever their relationship with this organization. Affirming that black lives matter is a world of difference from the tenor, tone and goals of the organization with that namesake.

Georgia Governor Declares State Of Emergency, Deploys National Guard Amid Atlanta Chaos

Georgia governor Brian Kemp (R) has declared a state of emergency and authorized the deployment of 1,000 National Guard troops due to a sharp increase in violent crime and property destruction in the city of Atlanta.

Five people were killed in shootings over the Fourth of July weekend, including an 8-year-old girl who was shot dead inside a car during a BLM protest. 30 more were wounded over the holiday weekend.

Georgia has seen violent protests, looting and violence since the deaths of George Floyd in Minneapolis, and Rayshard Brooks at an Atlanta drive-thru. In late May, rioters vandalized CNN's headquarters, broke into the College Football Hall of Fame and looted it, and started fires throughout the city.
