PREP Prepping for the next round of Corona Virus.(Or topping thing off)

So a while back I saw many many comments here from people saying they had let their preps get low and they were having problems finding things in stores due to "hoarding" from the general public in the face of the corona virus. Its been a while now, things have mostly gotten back on the shelves and I bet many of you have fell right back into the complacent pre corona selves you were before all this happened. We went out and bought stuff to top things off ourselves. We had plenty of what we needed but who knew where things might have went with this and I always say better safe than sorry. We stocked up on just enough random stuff that we buy regularly anyway and made sure we could use most of it before it expires. If we ever get close on dates I always find some poor sole, usually an old person around here and give it to them.

So anyway in light of the last big run on goods I thought some of you might consider starting now and checking on your stock and then every month or so leading up to the next election I think its a great idea to revisit the shelves and restock any holes that have been created. This last time was a very rude awakening for the general public and if "they" decide to scare us with another round of corona shelter in place orders I can bet that the general public will be out in full force grabbing from each other and it will possibly be a bad situation.

I know people who laughed at the hoarding that was going on. I asked one of them, a family member if they had everything they needed. They said I am not going to act like that we have plenty. About two weeks later he said he was out of toilet paper and could not find any anywhere in town, lol. I said guess maybe you should have realized that was gonna happen when all the "hoarding" was going on. He did not want to admit he was wrong but I am pretty sure he has a few extras now. I gave him a 8 pack of some cheap toilet paper just to help them along and said I suggest you save you paper towels and klenex for your rear end and use wash rags or something as napkins and klenex.

Either way you all know the last round surly woke some people up. If things get crazy again and if they ramp it up over the election in an effort to sway things people are gonna go bat poop crazy this time around.

We've been picking up some each week as things like TP, Paper Towels, Hand Sanitizer, etc., came back into the stores. We've had no issues with food stocks. Been able to replace as we've gone along. Haven't had to dip into the LTS at all, so don't have to worry about the backlogs there. Still in good shape on the LTS normal rotation. Good shape on canning jars and such. Have picked up some extra lids here and there but no many.

It can be a little hit & miss and still requires some luck on some things.

Did get some extra kerosene because one of the farm stores had it on special (out of season).

One of the things I still find impossible to get is N95 Genuine 3M masks. Still have plenty stored, but I would love to replace the ones we gave to others and the ones we've used.

There are all kinds of Chinese branded masks that claim good as n95, but their marked KN-95. Since the Chinese were the ones who created the WMD in their labs (and because of their past activities of selling sub-standard and even dangerous things), they'd be the very last I'd ever buy.

Another is any common caliber or gauge of ammo. Around my A/O the small gun shops all have slugs (at ridiculous prices) but no #00 12 ga. Plenty of 12 ga. clay rounds and small hunting loads, but even #1 and #2 goose loads are gone. They have some odd caliber hand gun loads, but no 357, 38's, 38+P, 40, or 45. The 22's aren't available except in the 25 or 50 round boxes and they are dearly priced. As far as guns themselves, 12Ga pumps are next to impossible to find and if you do they want the new price for a beat up used one. Pistols about the same. Some odd ones or a very few higher than high new ones.

Stocks up here are definitely nowhere near back to normal. I shop infrequently and always during a week-day at mid-day. But every time I go the stores are completely packed with shoppers. The same holes we have seen all along still happen, though not everything, every time. One day we'll have beef but no paper - maybe some flour but no sugar...etc.

Everyone is fishing. Everyone is growing a garden. Things fly off the shelf as fast as they come in. Maybe it's knowing we are way at the end of the supply chain - but no one here is complacent. In fact, it looks like more people are wearing masks than ever; stores continue to sanitize carts and provider hand cleaner etc. And the talk is about getting ready for round 2.

And....winter is coming....

Interesting that you started this thread now. Hubby just told me a couple of days ago that we need to add to the stock as he felt like it was going to get even worse. We haven’t gotten low, by any means, but we’ll be adding more. Hoping the garden gives us a good bit too.

And don't discount the inflation factor either.

I have a stack of TP as tall as I am. Literally. That's when I quit buying for a bit. I should have a pantry deep enough to for myself and surprise visitors that will last till kingdom come. I'm not letting that stop me, though, from putting up, buying up, and even accepting the donated produce gifted. I imagine things will work out somehow. Even during the dark ages, people had a way of living, loving & building bridges to the future. Still, I won't let that stop me from having a lifetime's supply of anything I don't wish to go a lifetime without. :: shrug ::

I dropped by Beprepared, a Long term storage food store, and they were wiped out, it seemed. . .

Ya... I can't find any real 3M N95 masks.
WHO HAS SMALL RIFLE PRIMERS? CANT FIND ANY ANYWHERE.
IT'S ONLY GOING TO GET WORSE AS NOV CLOSES IN.

As for food, I continue to stock canned soups. They are so versatile in tough situations. Probably won't be able to eat all them. Certainly won't get to them all before their expiration dates, but that's ok.

Food insurance. I am not upset when I pay for car insurance and end up not using it. It's "just in case," right?

For the upcoming winter....

I've also stocked up on a lot of wood for my emergency cook stove. Plan is to boil some rice and beans then pour soup over it. Complete protein and sufficient calories. I plan to add some sprouts as well. I think I'll call it GDWM (Grid Down Winter Mix).

Can't imagine complacency after the riots. Covid is still getting hyped to the hilt - doesn't matter if a person believes in it or not, TPTB are determined to get quite a bit more mileage out of it. After another round of Covid, probably more riots.

Some of us are feeling the financial strain.
We do what we can with what we have.

Don't really need anything, but when an opportunity arises, I strike like a cobra. It's going to get bad, really bad. Right now it's good, believe it or not. This is the little up lift before the giant down draft and crash. Get you stuff together and hang on. It's going to be a bad ride.

After the riots broke out, I quickly realized that the damned communist Democrats were sure enough that they were all going to Hang if Trump gets re-elected, so the war is ON! Been prepping since ‘71, so realized it is time to start adding “superpowers”: night vision, extra supplies of water and water movers (pumps) for irrigation and fire suppression, motion and temperature sensors to set off alarms if intruders near building entrances, truck-mounted winches to move logs and trees to harvest firewood, clear storm debris, fall trees to prevent access to our road if ”everything goes to hell”, extra chainsaws and other backups to the tool sets.
extra dimensional lumber, plywood, screws of all sizes, rechargeable batteries, walkie-talkies to stay in touch with family and allies in the neighborhood, salvaged EPDM (rubber membrane from building recycling) for emergency roofing material, etc.

Canned soup will be gold. It's a solid meal (soup with meat) and you can eat it right out of the can if needed. It will last many years past the best buy date.

This is our main food supply. I believe freezers full of food will go bad once they shut off our power.

Then bullets to protect the soup is needed.

I was thinking the same thing. I went to Costco this afternoon and topped off some TP, bottled water, and a few canned goods. Plenty of stock but the cheaper Costco-brand TP was gone completely.

Topping off as we use stuff. That said this coming weekend I need to pick up a can of black beans, a can of sliced beets, a head of lettuce, and a flat of chicken breast to can up, and damn it’s really good in a salad.

I've decided to go ahead and keep the extra 10lbs I've put on during lockdown. Will keep me warmer during the nasty Ohio winter, and if it's a choice between feeding my kids and feeding myself, my kids come first.

I'm planning this weekend to can up some of the meats in the freezer to make more room in the freezer. I'm not sure just why I feel compelled to do this. Since DH died this spring, our/my stock of supplies has basically doubled for me alone. I think part of the strong feeling to keep stocking up is because my BFF is a total DGI and will be SOL if/when things do get worse.

I'm also feeling pushed to cut and chop a bunch of the firewood I have in case it's needed this fall/winter for heating and cooking. Having lived off-road and off-grid for 20 years before moving back into town, I don't feel any panic about the future, just an urge to up the prep factor.

We are working down the TP and paper towels we bought during the first Covid panic. No way in heck will my wife entertain buying more just in case another panic is allegedly coming. While that stuff was pretty scarce for about 6 weeks, it’s not as if she had to do without (because I laid some extra in). She’ll just have to learn the hard way. Not easy being unequally yoked in the prepping sense.

Same here. Another 3 cords to our stockpile recently. Firewood for us is an essential. It's our sole sorce of heat and the ability to cook without electricity. I keep at least a year's worth of food in the pantry at all times, and adding more as I go. It's getting dang expensive, though.

I've been pleasantly surprised at how well the usual storage is lasting. What's it been now that things have been a bit stressed at the stores...about 4 months? That's already 1/3 of a year.

The pantry, freezer, home-canned show barely a dent...nothing really past the usual. Haven't touched anything in long term storage. This blip really hasn't been bad, because we have all mostly been able to replace (or substitute) what we have used.

It could have been or (could BE) a lot worse.

All my toilet paper is out of date I think I'll use it anyway.

Rent a storage building near you. Keep prepping. Keep the receipts for the building at the building. There are ways around unevenly.
