Have any of you used this for your dogs? This is a broad spectrum for eye infections, and very common; available online. Difficult to find specifics for the dosage, however. The packaging and online says is 2-4 times a day. OK, how big of a glop? How many days? How long util I should notice a difference if it's going to help?

I do about .125 inches per eye (1/8th)
If it's conjunctivitis you should see improvement in a couple of days.
You can also use a Boric Acid eyewash for wiping around the eyes.

Your Guide to Making and Using Boric Acid Eye Wash

Boric acid is basically a weak acid which has antiseptic properties. Boric acid eye wash is widely used to treat certain eye conditions.

  • "For Mild Eye Infections: Take ¼ teaspoon of powdered golden seal and ¼ teaspoon of boric acid powder, and mix in 1 pint of very hot water. When the water cools down completely, strain and store in sterilized bottle. Use as per requirement.
  • For Moderate Eye Infections: Mix one teaspoon of boric acid powder into one quart of sterile water. Mix well and store in a clean bottle.
  • For Severe Eye Infections: A pink eye can be cleaned using a solution comprising 1 teaspoon of boric acid powder and four ounces of saline water."

Seems like a lot, but probably doesn't hurt. With tinier amount, I wonder if any is even getting in. Poor Izzy has had booger eyes since she was little. Thought it was maybe just allergies or the way she was, but thinking now it's been an infection.. Probably should have taken care of this long ago.

I use a little less, but more isn’t bad, you should keep some around.

Have you priced it?! I used to be able to get a (tiny) tube for @$2.75. Same tube is now north of $18!

You have to hold the eyelid out away from the eye and put the medication directly underneath, while visually confirming it went in. It helps to have two people unless the animal cooperates well.

Sometimes it's easier to put in using your finger instead of trying to do it straight out of the tube, but remember conjunctivitis can infect you too.

The amount was what my vet stated to use. The cat has cancer in the eye, so it was also a form of lubrication against the tumor. Good luck with your pup

At least 2 times/day. Three is better. For a small eye, get 1/4 inch in or better. Horses and cattle, a bigger glop. Amount is mostly dependent on how cooperative your patient is. ;) Keep up treatment for at least 3 days AFTER signs of infection are gone. If it's gonna work, you should see massive improvement in 48 hours.

I always keep it around...great for any critter eye yuckies. Also keep a little tube in the first aid kit (truck kit/camping kit) because it's nice to spread on a wound before you bandage it if you are remote, and gonna BE remote for a while.

I'm going to put in longer blorps three times a day then, and keep an eye on it. She usually needs to have eye boogers cleaned out two or three times a day. If it starts working, I'm sure we'll know. Thereafter, I'll keep it up another three days.

Has a vet ever seen her? Since you say she's had the issue since puppyhood, I'm thinking she may have entropion, or another mechanical issue. (Entropion is when the eyelid is a bit malformed and turns in.. the eyelashes scratch the surface with every blink). A severe case is obvious, and potentially blinding (and very painful), but a milder case may just show irritation signs, such as excessive tearing and discharge.

It's also possible it's an issue with malfunctioning tear ducts...

Infection *almost always* shows other signs, such as redness, and if allowed to go on over l9ng periods of time, eye damage or even blindness.

Just saying... even if the Terramycin seems to help, at least a basic evaluation by a competent vet would be a good idea.

Summertyme has it. I was just going to post that it may not be an infection. Inverted eyelids, hair growing into eyes, or blocked tear ducts are common...in fact, that eyelid surgery is very common. I had it done on my Lab while she was under anesthesia for something else. It wasn't very expensive, and didn't take the vet long for both eyes...a little snip and a couple of stitches. Huge relief for the dog.

Pugs can often have the entropion problem from their stop rubbing their eyes, but she doesn't have that issue at all, or any eyelid issue that I can see. I'm going to give the terramycin a go first, and then take it from there.

Been using the terramycin 3 times a day for two days now, and I'm seeing a lot of improvement. Her morning eye boogs are nearly gone. I think it's working. Going to keep going for a few more days.
